Is IRC and ICQ a must to have?

I ve tried using email to notify of server status but I never get anything. So I am curious if IRC or ICQ is more effective?If there are any other options for email use that would be greatly apperciated. I tried some free email servers to access with no luck. What about yahoo,hotmail etc?

On the boxen I oversee, all critical things are text paged to me with the use of scripts, if the main boxen can't get a ping back or data flow from the other boxes, it'll notify me.. if hard drive capacity is getting low on a box, it'll text me as well. Many many things can be done to keep track of all critical things with scripts while being away/working remotely and not seeing the errors on the screen visually(the boxes I use are of Linux/UNIX origin, so that doesn't exactly work with windows) unless you utilize WinCron and get very tricky with it, use custom packets, and have a decent coding background to write a few small apps to interface with each other. Text paging/SMS is the key, and if all the boxes go..and your phone just starts ringing off the hook.... assume you're having a massive power outage, crack a beer, wait for it to return.

That's just one of the many ideas on resolving it, it really depends on network architecture in the planning of something like this.. no RAID or redundant boxes and the one that's supposed to contact you keels over..you obviously get nothing at all, and it defeats the purpose.
