While at Defcon 12 I discovered that several of the attendees had a passion for poker specifically No Limit Hold Em. I have played around with this idea for some time thinking it might be feasible. My set up would go like this: By in for 10 bucks which will get you unlimited drinks and snacks while playing, with the winner of the tournament winning the prize of the by ins. My main dilemma with this is that with AP going Casino will this pose any problems with the AP management and specifically Nevada gaming laws because technically speaking there is no gambling going on, the purse being awarded to the overall winner. A goon who I talked to at Defcon who worked with gambling in California seemed quite knowledgeable on the subject and I thought it might work. Any comments?

The AP will be a gambling hotel by the time we are there again. I like the idea, but remember that some of the folks need to save up in advance for a freakin' t-shirt from Defcon. They are in no rush to gamble.

Is it blackbeetle that I need to e-mail my idea to if I wanted to add a Defcon Poker Con banner to the event to cover any legal issues with using the Defcon Logo? Yeah I agree that money for tee shirts and swag comes first so I was toying with the idea of having it Sunday night that way it does not interfere with Forum Meet, B and W Ball, Toxic BBq Ect.... I also though of adding the Defcon Card Deck that I bought from Jinx (which they only had 35 left when I ordered) as part of the prize.

Has anyone ever riden a motorcycle in a poker run? You ride to a few pre determined locations, draw a card at each stop, after the fifth card and final stop, best hand wins a percentage of the pot.

A poker run, Defcon sytle could be interesting.....
Replace the bike with a laptop and wireless card, and instead of riding to a distant location to draw a card, one would need to perform some type of task on their laptop before drawing the card.

Just a thought...

i see that we aren't talking about pokercon anymore, but some of my friends just put together a poker tournament of 90 people and here were some helpful resources they used.

Another thing is, does anybody have alot of poker chips that they could use for it.

Problem with conventional poker chips is they are tokens for something with more value. It is Vegas, after all, and considering the success of the savenger hunts of past, finding similar poker chips would be easy.

Even special-made chips for the con are at risk for counterfeiting.

If the AP will have a casino by DC13, and DC13 is there, they may be willing to provide chips and have the security to deal with counterfeiting.

In a typical tournament, the chips are made specially for the event (http://www.pokerchips.com/advertising/advertising.html). They are provided at buy-in and when the day's playing is over, the tournament organizers take your chips and keep them safe. The next day they give you your chips back (providing you're still in the play). You don't remove the chips from the table--ever.

Don't get me wrong, I think it would be cool to have chip specially made for pokercon but what ever happened to the day's of put up or shut up? If you got cash, put it on the table, You got a nice watch, put it on the table, rings, key's to the car or house, Whatever, just put it on the table. If we need to get something going for pokercon as far as getting chips lets work on it together or something.

If anything, you could just designate a room or two for private poker games (do we have access to the rooms that the forum meet was in last year?) - tournament style BYOB would be a little easier instead of $10 to buy booze while you play (which i DO think is a wonderful idea, but I dont think will fly well with DC organizers since it may be considered competition with the AP).

I wouldnt worry too much about counterfeiting the kind of chips that we'd have, theorretically you wouldn't know until you made it to your table and if defcon, so if someone got caught cheating after we wrote "cheater" all over them in sharpie we'd throw the pool, so I think that would be pretty much covered.

I think this is me.
I was a Wall of Sheep goon and I do work for a Gaming Agency in California.

Not 100% on Nevada gaming laws, but if the AP is like other casinos in Vegas. What you do in your private room is your buisness. You will have to get an okay with AP if you have it in a public area.

I'm willing to lend a hand if you need help with this.

Since entry to the AP requires a DefCon badge, or being an employee, could it be argued that the AP during DC is not public, but a private event?

Will the AP still be closed to non DC people, or will they keep their casino open to the public?

Is there a head count yet on who wants in?
What day/time will this kick off?
Will there be re-buys allowed? If so, how many times can you re-buy?
Will there be mandatory blind increases? If so, what will the time periods be before the blind's are increased?

Details Forthcoming...I would also rather keep this on a private level to the forum members for the most part or at least people I know.... I enjoy Poker and have for the last 9 years so I am a little disgusted with many of the newer players and their so called skill...So if I can I would prefer people with talent and are not going to get pissed if they lose to play.

So, I take it that you also dislike the newbie players that...
1) Hold out with a crappy hands until the end.
2) Try to go "all in" during limit game.

As I said before I am in and am willing to help anyway i can just keep me informed, these days I have been really busy with work and have even gone as far as buying a sidekick so I can keep up with the going ons of defcon, just let me know. As far as skills well then we'll just have to see at the table, but I do agree on the whole fourum deal. Once again let me know.

This would be a fun thing to set up at the Riveria.... is it possible to use them for our own tournament?

Cheers,
Vog

PokerCon was a new idea suggested for Defcon 14 and had its own contest subforum for planning and discussion. You can check through the discussions there, which will be closed soon, and see that the list of requirements imposed by the casino would have made it difficult to be the fun, relaxed, environment as envisioned by the organizers.

The hotel/casino required that the dealers must be professionals (I think provided for by the hotel at cost)
Play in the game required that people buy seats long before the contest and/or limited to club members; sales of "seats" was not allowed on the same day.
Money would be provided up-front.

Check out the threads in that forum for more information on what would be involved in having a PokerCon at Defcon in Las Vegas

Yes, this is true. The costs were prohibitive. We were even trying to swing doing it as as fundraiser, but the Riveria is fairly strict on these type things. We're open to alternatives. I know there are a ton of folks at DC that would like to give this a shot. Is it worth us looking into it again? Maybe in a different format?

There's gotta be a way to bring it to life .. it's just generally a rough location to bring about this kind of event. ie, drop money from the game itself and play for fun/bragging rights, possible prizes of sorts for various finishing spots... sell tshirts/sodas/snacks to raise money for EFF/HackerFoundation? ... but the Riv could get all kinds of nasty if they discovered service-related sales being made that they didn't get their cut on..
