I have not seen anything on the boards concerning the WiFi competition this year... It will still be on correct? Or did it die? (please say no!)

It's still early. Patience.

(The WarDriving Contest staff have bee discussing some ideas, but nothing concrete as of yet.)

Thorn is correct. There will definitely be a contest, and we have a pretty good idea of the direction we are going with it...but I change my mind 5 times between my chair and the pisser...so who knows what will happen between now and July.

long distance shootout? or all ideas under rusty lock and key in the minds of the beholders?

I've been talking to Chris about creating a combined "mini-contest" based off one of his last year. Locate the AP, then pick a lock on the security cage to disable it. The contest would require the combined skills of lockpicking and WiFi.

(Gotta admit RenderMan's inability to manage his time and compete in both contests last year was the inspiration. )

Sound interesting to anyone?

Ahh...you mean the WiFi shootout. No idea what those guys are up to, if anything.

Hey, I would have had the runningman(woman) found in 10 minutes if my gear had been reporting the right MAC (still have'nt figured that one out), and Chris extending the contest time

I actually like the idea of combining contest skills for something like that, however I'm not sure if there's enough people with overlapping skill sets that could make for a good competition. You can't assume every Wi-Fi guy knows how to pick, and vice versa.

Would a team not fix this problem? I do payloads, you do recon, and he will do lock picking.

That's how it works, generally, in the real world

That takes the practicality of not knowing the AP is going to be behind a physical lock though =/

I can't wait for the excitement, the thrill, the shear painstaking agony! Who pray tell can build a bigger dish this year?! How many $500 gift certificates will be given away?!

That was a pretty cool setup that you had last year, and although I missed out on the contest last year (due to some alcoholic reason!) I will definately participate this year. Hope to see the same or like contest.

question is, what happens when Alice has found the WiFi point and is crouching down by the lock for 2 or 3 minutes, then Bob comes along with his picks out? would he have to wait for Alice to give up? or would the cage perhaps have multiple doors, with each one bearing an identical lock? (Thus, even if Alice was a little quicker on the WiFi part, Bob could still win if his picking time is faster)

sounds like a really awesome plan, in any case. perhaps i'll have to improvise a RenderRig myself and go head to head with my bro from Canada.

I had a similar idea for a Capture the Flag contest, Hack the server remotely or just unlock the server room and get physical access... it was involving more that just Mecanical lock... Eheh Fingerprint access control, Proximity Card...

Anyway if anyone would like to get me involve in helping with the contest, you know where to find me...

Just think about all the people running after roamer to get his finger... Iris scan access control would be funny too but Roamer does't deserv that

In almost every picture I've ever seen of roamer he offers his finger rather freely.

There are known ways to spoof fingerprint scanners. Some are better than others, but usually the biggest problem is getting a valid print from a subject who has been previously authenticated to the system.

This is exactly why it be interesting :) If it be easy, there would be no fun :)

It's even harder to get the fingetprint of someone who know everyone is after his fingerprint :)

I'd like too see the comando team going after Chris while he would be wearing glove ;)

Maybe we should do it with someone that does't know he is targeted by people, that would make it more interesting...

hehehe, I like the idea of a team tackling chris to get his fingerprint, though one could easily lift a print from all the beer bottles lying around him

Jesus...I can see the Scavenger Hunt sheet already...how come no one one ever puts "Buy Chris a case of Rolling Rock" or "Pay for a night of Chris' Blackjack" on the scav hunt list? Nooooo...it's always "Get your picture taken with Chris' arm around you" and shit like that where I have to dodge Scav Hunt contestants for 3 days.

Sucks to be me man...sucks to be me.

No one has figured out that the "Buy Chris a case of Rolling Rock" task is implied by the "Get a picture with Chris" task. You just need to establish a pricing scheme for it.

Then again, there's always Goon Beer on the list every year. But if you and the other goons are all Rolling Rock fans, I'm sure we can arrange to make that clear on the list. As for pictures with goons, considering for the most part, we have the same contestants every year, pictures will be limited to a select few this year, and to be honest, if it really bothers you, I'll make sure your name isn't on there.

I think something that might make it a bit more interesting is that some goons stick out wherever they go. If you want to keep it with more of a 'hunt' theme, maybe get a list of newer goons or some that are drafted on Thursday of con, that way it's not as easy as to look for the target. Make em work for it. Granted, it would annoy the piss outta me to have someone ask me 50 times an hour, "Where can I find XXX goon?" Of course there are always creative ways of servicing those who need answers.

Just a thought.

I have no plans to be in the Scavenger Hunt this year, but can I make an appointment to take a pic with you. By the way, I'm bring my family along too, if you could find time for a group shot as well as some individual portraits, that would be nice.

What I want to know is why Eve needed to poke her nose in it?

What was Bob doing that made this necessary? Thats what I want to know

I find it surprising that any 7 year old would understand half the words he uses. At the very least I would'nt want my daughter repeating any of them :)
