I find the whole thing stupid. Its not changing anything. Anyone who could have broken into a system before could have done something just like this. On top of it, putting things up for ransom only makes it easier to catch people.

What's interesting is fact that when payment cannot be made (e.g. site down, people arrested, etc) then you have a logic bomb with gureenteed detonation floating around on the net. Though this was just be cannon fotter like code red and nimda are now after everyone has the updated virus scanners

It's a new twist on an old game and the most it will be is a fad, generating FUD.

What can you do to protect your files? Create a disaster recovery plan and make sure you keep regular backups. Treat the hostage data the same way you'd treat data loss and restore from backup.

Good call, mitigate the risk same as with a standard hard drive crash DRP. ndex you sooo smart :)
