    DefCon Forums Survival Guide (?)

I noticed people do read the rule. Why not offer a Forum Survival guide? Easier to refer to it, and lurkers may benefit.

Suggestions for additions of items listed here, NOT found in the rules?

    BEFORE You Post:
    0) Lurk-- Learn from others' mistakes. (in rules)
    1) Understand the rules or suffer the consequences.
    2) CrossPosting: Don't do it.
    3) Is your Question common?: Search google. Use the forum search. Read matching threads. If your question is not answered, then consider most recent thread for posting. If there are no matching threads, then maybe you have a new thread topic.
    4) Topic: Would DefCon people want to read your post?

    WHEN you post:
    A) Old Thread?: The older a thread is, the more important and useful to forums members your contribution should be in that thread.
    B) Flaming: If you are new, don't do it. If you're not, avoid jumping on the bandwagon. If you must, be constructive.
    C) Colored Text: It's safer to not use it. Occasional highlighting of certain words may be fine.

HOW do members view the forums?
    I) People's view before joining
    II) People's view after joining

    Other ideas?
Focus only on things NOT in the rules, keep it short.
(Short? Did I just write that?)

Because people will read it about as much as they read the rules.

I read the rules when I started, and I occasionally see anonymous users viewing the rules before they register, or users that have registered viewing the rules.

It's something I would have used if [it] existed.

However, you and the people who read the rules are the type of people that this forum doesn't have problems with... The people who read the rules wouldn't need a survival guide as a supplement.

My guess from your original post is the "survival guide" is geared towards those who don't read the rules... so what makes you think they'll read a "survival guide"?

And if the SG is JUST a supplement to the rules then I would venture to say those that do read the rules are those who lurk and wouldn't need a SG. It would be redundant.

People who don't read the rules probably won't read a SG. The target is a person that reads the rules, and wants to contribute but feels intimidated.

This is not official. The rules are more static.

A second purpose it to save typing. No need to repeat the same ideas if I can just link to a thread.

Well, why don't you type something up and get back to us?

Seriously, the forum worked for all the people who are here now and they didn't need a survival guide. If someone is too much of a pussy to speak up, then tough shit.

              Heh-heh. We've had a conversation about me being a secretary. ]:>

I read your opinion, but I don't agree with it.

Do you have other reasons to not like it? What else do you see wrong with it? Do you see any value in this at all? In your view, would its existence further dilute the membership on the forums? Why else would/does it suck?

Seems kinda like a waste of your time to me... As highwiz said, a lot of people have already made it onto these forums and have survived thus far... its not THAT hard.( Highwiz made it right ;-P )
Also as stated earler, I think anyone who doesn't read the rules won't read a survival guide, or anything else.
If they can't make it on the forums past their first few posts, and/or they don't read the rules... they don't belong to be here, and probably wouldn't be much of a benifit if they did 'survive'.
Life's hard, then you die. If they don't have confidence to speak up, or make it here without being banned... they have bigger problems than the DC forums.

2 for 2. I added a poll. Let's see how low a score I can get on this.

So freaking ironic that the first several posts in this thread are between Cot & Highwiz....

I still vote for a quiz on the rules before completing registration.

Maybe you should look into a basic language test (like in Kingdom of Loathing before you're allowed to chat)- where they can't post until they pass that...
