post here to sign up for the DefCon 14 "Beverage" Cooling Contraption Contest. remember, teams must consist of badge-toting DefCon attendees and should not exceed three people. (exceptions perhaps can be made, contact me directly if this is a really hard problem for you and we'll maybe work something out. head may be involved.)

sweet. i look forward to seeing what crazy cryogenic contraption you two come up with this time around. remember, this year the cans will be opened and their contents poured through the devices.

to all those who didn't know, noid and lil_freak won the brute force cooling award (http://deviating.net/bccc/defcon13/index.html#brrrr) last time around.

Idont know yet i think i will have a teammate but he has not sayed if he is going yetthat's cool. he can certainly join with you in the operation of your contraption if he wishes. or, if it's just you, that's fine, too. in our virgin run of this little shindig last year there were only four entries... two of the four were from single-person teams. (see the DC13 BCCC results page (http://deviating.net/bccc/defcon13/index.html) for more details. page may be up and down later today since i'm doing work on that server... rebuilding a desynced RAID-5 array that is over a TB in size. yeah, that's a whole lotta fun.)

I am kinda freaked i will not do welltrust me, you'll do fine. i'll refer you to that same link a couple lines above. even people last year who missed the mark or pushed the physics of beer to the breaking point had fun. that's really the whole point... to show up and demonstrate some creative thinking in a casual and entertaining environment. everyone who participates gets free prizes (not to mention plenty of free beverages), there's liquor-related trivia which allows teams and bystanders to win stuff, etc etc. trust me, there's no way to do badly in a game with so few rules. we'd love to see what you come up with.

Plus Deviant gives you beer. Of course you will need to sample the temperature of said beer several times over the course of the contest and in significant volumes per test. It's not like you lose anything :)

Do we have any idea yet on if this will be an indoor or outdoor event? As you might remember, my entry last year was rather messy and probobly nearly explosive (bubbling vat of highly flamable alcohol was probobly not the smartest idea). Just want to approach my design this year from the one that is least likely to cause a fire hazard

Deviant Ollam

Plus Deviant gives you beer.heh... beverage. i give out lots of beverage to contestants, as this is the beverage cooling contraption contest (as per the lawyer's advice)... it's supposed to be a contest with, ah, uhm... tea! in my experience, whenever you're ready to partake in an activity involving lots of tea, out of the blue a rowdy element always shows up and suddenly replaces all the tea with beer. i don't know how or why this happens... but it's what i keep telling the cops in my area.

Do we have any idea yet on if this will be an indoor or outdoor event?that is one outstanding question, and would be best approached by a discussion with someone who is familiar with the grounds and the flow of the space we'll have for defcon. i'll get into it with DA or DT and try to find out how things are shaping up. i'd like to have an area that allows for lots of passing foot traffic but doesn't get in anyone's way at all. i'll differ to them on what that will be like, altho i have to say that the poolside setup was pretty sweet last time.

my preference would be next to one of the pools in a spot with some shade and an electrical outlet should anyone's designs need one (of course, people are rewarded for self-sufficience if they need electricity).

Loki151, no need to worry, the object isn't to do well. the object is to have fun. If we get a little cold beer out of it, that's a great side effect. Of course, i'm an english beer fan and it's always served room temperature.

Have you considered contacting MythBusters to see if they would be interested in the results of your contest? Don't they film on the west coast? Maybe they would be willing to attend Defcon to see the contest.

Look! They even have their own forums (http://community.discovery.com/1/OpenTopic?a=cfrm&cdra=Y&s=6941912904&f=2991937776) at the discovery site.

Have you considered contacting MythBustersi thought about it, perhaps i'll drop them a line. even if they don't check things out or film it (i'm not one for being on TV, anyway) i'll bet they'd get a kick out of hearing about it.

of course, if they were to drop by just for fun and to watch the proceedings, it would be pretty neat to meet them and let them know how much i appreciate and enjoy the work they do on the show. heh, kari byron could get swarmed by all the sex-starved loners who have fantasized about her over the years.

side note - i may be alone in saying this, but while i have an appreciation for kari's cuteness, etc. i have to say that scottie was much more my style when she was still on the show. skillful and mad capable with all sorts of tools... that's attractive in my book.

The average American drinks 22 Gallons of beer annually, and even though this product would demand a large price premium over a traditional can, the convenience factor and bragging rights would make this a must have item.

I refute this statistic (i kill 22 gallons monthly) and delve into the glorious world of BCCC ! I'll probably be "wearing" my contraption all week, so if I'm passed out somewhere along the confines of the Defcon event someone just roll me over to the contest and we'll be good to go.

BTW, I gave these folks a call, and they were very interested in the event-- maybe to the point of bringing out some "product" and conducting a fully interactive demonstration. http://www.turbotap.com

Now can they hook one to a deck chair by the pool? About a foot over the headrest....

Would be cool if we could have them participate with thier 'pro' gear and see how it goes. Handicap for having a budget and sponsorship though.

Still want to see the mythbusters out there to judge

http://www.turbotap.comi'm sometimes pleased when people pour research and funding into alcohol related industries... but this just seems dissapointing to me. from what i can tell, it's a device with two main functions that define its purpose...

1. to be a dumbed-down, easy to operate aparatus that will help business owners to fire experienced bartenders and instead hire minimum wage drink jockeys.

2. to automatically rocket the beer into the glass in such a way that it is guaranteed to produce a foamy head, which they specifically advertise as a way to "get more servings out of each keg"... this is, of course, just a polite way of saying "cheat your customers out of one inch of the beer they're already overpaying you for"

the beers that actually should have a neat head on top (for flavor and sensation's sake) aren't pulled with a traditional tap (least of all a rocket monster like this), they are drawn from a controlled-flow tap. (ever get a Guiness in a proper pub? the tap will have two draft valve settings... one for the main pour, then another for the controlled top-off. if your stout doesn't have a bishop's hat on the top, then your bartender doesn't know his stuff)

this hardware seems best suited for bars that cater to the spring break crowd where everyone's drinking lite beer out of 7 oz plastic cups for $4 a glass.

of course, i could be reading this all wrong and missing the point somehow. in any case, a hearty welcome to the newcomer to the thread and the contest. i eagerly await your contraption.

Wait, Its a "Beer" cooling contest. Or a "Beverage" because I happen to be the lowly age of 17.underage participants are allowed. if you have anyone on your team who is of age, we can legally hand the beer to them... after it goes through the machine it's up to them what happens to it. we also will have some non-alcoholic beer available if a team has no members over 21. trust me, there's always a way to do just about anything... and participating in the BCCC is no exception. we'll make it happen for whomever shows up.

I think an "open" beer may be a concern but if it is closed and you don't ask for money for it, hey. It's like asking your kid to get you a beer out of the fridge.

What if your over 21 but don't want to use beer? Will this effect the outcome of your project and points received?i will not stop a contestant from participating in whatever way makes them happiest... but since flavor is part of the game (remember... contraptions are supposed to be engineered in a way that doesn't produce an off-taste to the final beer) it will be harder to judge since non-alcoholic beers are often not outstanding.

also, i can be in no way held responsible if passers-by call participants pussies or lightweights or any other shit should they be over 21 and not drinking at defcon.
