You know, this just gave me an idea.

When I was in college, we made a four-storey yard of ale. This basically involved a standard yard glass, big metal funnel, and a garden hose. The principles behind its operation are probably self-explanatory, and not entirely disanalogous to the concept of drinking from a firehose. What I can't adequately describe here is the 'oh-shit-here-it-comes-no-wait-not-yet' air of anticipation and trepidation while air is displaced out of the hose (with accompanying sounds) before the beer makes it to the other end.

Now imagine the same idea only making use of the Rivera's greater height. Sure, the liquid's only going to move at the same speed, but the increases in volume possible with greater hose length could add a new dimension to the game.

We'll also need a disclaimer to hand to the participants: "Not to be used as a substitute for bathing or showering."

Edit: I called the Riviera. They didn't have exact figures to hand, but estimated the height of the main tower at around 230 to 250 feet. This could be interesting.

230-250 feet > 7010.40 - 7620.00 cm

Garden hose: 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch "inner diameter" -> 1.270cm to 1.9050 cm

Vcyl= h * (pi) * r2
V= 8880.555 cm3 (low end, 1/2 inch inner diameter hose, to 230 feet)
V= 21718.74 cm3 ("upper" end 3/4 inch "inner diameter" to 250 feet.)

1cm3=1ml
From 8.880 to 21.718 LITERS ?!?!

Specific Gravity fof Beer or Ale 1.006 to 1.018 (http://www.briansbelly.com/glossary2.shtml).

8933.83 grams -> 22109.68 grams
8934 grams -> 19.695743 pounds
22109.68 gram -> 48.7435164 pounds

[MAX,MIN] = [19.695743 pounds, 48.7435164 pounds]
The actual MAX could be much higher, since hoses are not rigid, but often expand with pressure. Assuming the hose, nozzle, seals at linkages don't burst or break as a result of the weight of the hose+fluid, the bottom part of the hose would have enough pressure to expand the internal diameter of the bottom of the hose even more to allow a greater volume of booze, which adds more weight and pressure, and may increase the volume a little more, which will...

There is a limit. It depends on the strength of the hose, the humidity (maybe) and the temperature.

If this happens, someone get it on video.

I nominate DC719. If they can do a 35 foot beer bong, this should be no problem.

I did similar math, and got results that were pretty close to that. You're not the only one who was surprised.

True, and remember also that the entire inner volume of the hose won't be filled - just whatever capacity gets poured into it and comes barreling down.

I had also thought about doing a beer shower or sprayer using this method, but that probably wouldn't be as entertaining.

If this happens, someone get it on video.

Already inspected and priced out hoses this afternoon; just figuring out how best to do it.

Hey... My idea! No stealing my thunder! :)

Now how about filling a barrel full of dr pepper and dropping a coffee can of Mentos into a tiny hole in the top? Can we make a fountain to reach the top of the tower?

...the world may never know....

and what does "Riviera is the hotel from Casino" actually mean anyway?

other question...does % of alcohol go higher the faster it is traveling? <g>

I don't know if the terminal velocity of alcohol is higher than that of water. Good time to test.

What a waste of alcohol. Where I come that could be considered alcohol abuse. :cool:

No way! :smile: Actually, I think where this is going is: will Alcohol separate from the beer (water) if it is going at a high enough velocity? And if so, how do we seperate the alcohol as it comes down the tube?

Che?

Hey, I would love to see a custom Riviera Commemorative Chip for Defcon 14 like these:

GodMinusOne suggested it too and there was a response added to the FAQ (http://www.defcon.org/html/defcon-14/dc-14-faq.html#poker%20chips).

I guess we'll find out in a few...

Wow. Only 3 weeks and 6 days (not counting today) before badges are supposed to be sold.

Mmm... Bigger booms :)

Sure, let me know what you've got in mind. Right now I'm just waiting for the hose to arrive and pretty much have no real set plan for this other than to set it up and see what happens.

True, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have the longest hose at Defcon.

So, you are bringing more "hose" to Las Vegas, and you're going to have the logest hose at defcon. Homonyms + implied metaphor?

"Heh-heh. heh-heh hrm. He said, he's got whores and a long schloing. heh heheh hrm."

As funny as this is, I think recording the first person to attempt to use this on film will be worth the time to watch.Even if it isn't a train wreck, the look on their face when they realize, "oh no! Here it comes" will be pricesless.

Haha, funny ass shit. That's when the barrel comes flying out the window and smashes the person on the head. You're talking about a very challenging feat but if you're down for doing it let me know so this monument of triumph can be recorded in history :biggrin:
