How about multiple target OS's, MAC OS X, Linux, Solaris and Windows?

actuly we tried this last year, sevral diffrent distro's and a windows nt server. plainly put, it caused more problems then it was worth. its possible we might try that kind of "hoge poge" setup again but not this year most likely -_-.

Did not know - was not paying that much attention to the ACTF/CTF last year. Sorry it did not pan out as each presents a differen challenge.

One idea might be to use them as tier's. Successfully gain access to one and then move up to the next OS which is harder.

actuly we thought about doing that too, the only problem with that is it makes the contest more of a race then mine field... and we kinda like the mine field :D

Something that uses voip voice mail by either stealing or dropping messages. Might be funny to hear random crap over speakers to announce what VM box just got cracked.

as i said above.. we did multi os's before and had issues, we might return to a setup that incorporates this concept but more than likely, not this year :D0

actually we have a few sound based services in the works... and a few others that are designed to "announce" when changes are made ;)

I think I might have some good ideas, but was wondering what the purpose of aCTF was? I looked on your website, but couldn't find an answer. Is the purpose to gain knowledge or just to show off your skills? The reason why I ask is I run a website for the condos where i live. I have never "hacked" anything before. I know that DefCon is not itended to be a "newbie" tutorial, but more a forum to exchange information. As such, could aCTF be setup has an echange for other Con attendees to showcase the vulnerabilities (ex. sendmail, ssh) and ways to secure it?

the reason there isnt a good explanation of actfIII up at our site at the moment is because our contest is subject to change every year, although we have decided on a format and method of standings for this year. (site problems have kept them off the net for a bit longer than expected).

actf is supposed to be 1/2 battle friendly competitive battle ground and 1/2 network challenge. the idea is to provide a minefield type network of computing puzzles and riddles that contestants will navigate through and solve to obtain points. the catch is that once solved, each puzzle becomes a point of control over which to battle by trying to keep other would be solvers away from accomplishing the same task.

in years past, CTF has done contests where contestants had to provide there own servers and guard them against would be attackers, as of yet however we have not adopted this contest type. thats not to say we wont try something like that in the future ;).

to say that defcon is not a place for n00bs i would say is incorrect tho. the con is very much "what you make of it". the atmosphere that defcon and its staff strive to create is one of perpetual learning for security enthusiast. weather its a hack you want to show off or a sploit you would like to see patched, i think if you come to defcon with questions and an open mind, you will in many cases find answers you would otherwise have to look for far and wide with varying results.

Thank you for you answer, I look forward to the contest this year? I tried to do my own research on it like the rules stipulate, but couldn't find any information.

I was a little concerned cause i got the impression that n00b questions were frowned upon.

we have decided on a format and method of standings for this year.

Does this mean you do not need any ideas for this year?

What might be interesting is if you could somehow split up big monolithic teams and make them cooperate with each other instead of staying insular and competitive. Not sure how to do that, but it's kind of a personal regret of mine that I spent half of my first con with the same batch of people I always hang with.

heh, sounds like a defcon mini game...
"ctf grab bag", all contestants are thrown into groups that are selected at random and then told to find a hack, first one to hack the box in question wins!"

iono about actf but that could be a cool contest on its own ;)
