If you would like to possibly DJ/Perform , Be sure to have a demo set in mp3, wma or ogg format . Then PM me for further information.(15minutes or less please)

Hopefully in the next few days I can dig up bink from work and sit down w/ him and get all this figured out .

Nerdcore seems to be a growing idea at this years Defcon.

Personally, I would like to throw a name in the hat for Nerdcore at Defcon: The Big Beat Battaltion. They will already be at Defcon on Thursday for theSummit, and would also like to perform either on Friday or Saturday night in Penthouse club.

You can get samples of their music at http://www.bigbeatbattaltion.com

That being said I am interested in getting some fresh ideas concerning acts for B&Wa high ranking item for me would be better/faster ways to get the recordings of the event out to the attendees. either with publicly-available board patches so folks could do their own recordings for personal use, or someone willing to put out a torrent for the whole sets within a day or two of the con.

i, personally, have been waiting for the minibosses set (which i actually offered to record if i could have had a board patch) since august.

just my $0.02

either with publicly-available board patches so folks could do their own recordings for personal use,

Holy crap that's a good idea! Streaming content across network? Or even to a channel on the room TV? For people's room parties!

even to a channel on the room TV? For people's room parties!now that would be pretty amazing. i know that we didn't get to have the movie channel last year due to the hotel's being asinine about matters... but having the DJ sets broadcast would be amazing if it's possible.

Bink has yet to burn down the recordings of last year . i think .

The issue with a breakout patch from the console is babysitting that persons property the entire evening..

If someone provides equipment that can push a A\V signal to a stream or channel they would be welcome to patch in. we have had defcon radio in the past
hook up and broadcast .
now only if we could get a pirate TV signal setup ( Hint ... Hint)

Ideas for Sets:
Everyone is scheduled for a 45 minute set. Ok: I know that sounds WEIRD. But how often have the B/W ball(s) not been on schedule?

The thing is: leave all the djs/bands an HOUR block, so you get 15 minute leeway between acts for....random Priest/Goon chaos, cops, alien invasion, beer drinking, etc.

just .02 stuff i've found out through promoting my own parties...

Perhaps get in contact with the local Vegas Promoters & DJs in Vegas; such as Delchi & 3vil_1?

Perhaps try to prevent the dramafest that happened last year? ;)

The issue with a breakout patch from the console is babysitting that persons property the entire evening.i can't imagine a huge number of people would avail themselves of the board patch. if people were restricted to using small devices (i.e.- MP3 player/recorders, DAT devices, minidisc units, etc) i don't think it would be a huge burden on the DJ staff, would it?

i mean, you hand up a device with the record function running. all the booth staff would do is plug it in to a jack with properly-normalized volume (really, just line-level inputs) and let it roll. at the end of the night, the four or five people who were jacked in can claim their stuff. ask them to mark their devices with colored tape or some other sort of flag if need be.

just my $0.02

This is a good question!

We don't have Top of the Rive this year, so we need a new home for the B&W ball.

I'm thinking maybe put it where there is good flow, where we can be loud and not disturb anyone. That way it can go later, keep more people near the sky box parties and the out door area (Which we will keep open late)

Wow....the top of the Riv was a good venue in theory for sure, awesome place, and glad I got to play there...

Ideally if money wasn't an issue, I'd just ask if you wanted to rent out RA or ICE.

*tries to think of a Riv venue* All I can think of is the floor at the bottom of the skyboxes, but that would be loud and bother the skyboxen and echoy...

I fully agree with the criteria of finding a new space.

Ideas, guys?

in reality, any of the ballrooms would work out fine. but the rooms on the ground floor that have the power hooks that we need are Pavillion 5 or 6 and Grande ballroom A or E. we can also consider sharing the room as we did in the past with a daytime talks room. just as long as we get 4 hours to set up bands for Saturday night (if we have an 8pm open, the talks end at 4pm). Friday is easy,30 to 45 minutes tops to get ready. we will just need time for the banquet staff to pull chairs and set some tables.

as always, you know myself and Zziks are always up for a good challenge.

Here is a post, and begin of thread from a little over 2 months ago which included discussion of floor plan use. DT included 3 maps showing potential floor use for each of the 3 days, which may be useful. (New spaces are open on the ground floor for Defcon which were not open to us last year.)

Hope this helps.

so looking at the proposed room layout, i'm feeling the chillout/contest area. here are some benefits to using this area
1. power we need for B&W is located in the Northeast corner of the room
2. there are rig points so we can fly our lighting rig in the air ( no trip hazards)
3. we can invite other DJs to spin chill out at a background volume during the day.
4. right next to the smoking area (for those of you who have not been informed, Las Vegas passed the no smoking law for all public areas, minus casino floors and bars with no food.)
5. we won't have to clear or shut down the room for set-up. not like we're gonna interfere with any of the talks, so our set up schedule will be pretty relaxed. we'll enjoy that.
6. daytime use of the stage to announce contests, speaker changes, special events, etc...

thats what i think. like i said before, we're up for anything, but i think this space would be prime for us.

There are some things that would need to be worked out with this:
aCTF has used this space 2 years in a row, and spent a *lot* of time running cables tables, and taping the cat5* to the carpet to avoid people tripping over the network. The setups were both long and tedious, and were not things that could quickly, or easily be picked up and re-laid-out every morning.
aCTF was playing music in the contest space last year. It would be good to have everyone on the same page for music generation so there are not multiple sources in the same room, and to ensure saving people the transport space of the heavy equipment needed to have the amplified music if they know they won't need to bring their own equipment.

The Defcon Robots contest had a rig which stayed up between contest days, and moving the rig from last year each night could have lead some to complain if they sensed any functional difference between the runs on different days. Their rig will be different this year. I don't know if it will lend itself to tear-down and reset, or move.

LPCon has many locks, which can be heavy and bulky, requiring much effort to tear down and setup each night. (This may have been done last year, and maybe they will do this next year and store the locks in the LP Village overnight-- I've not heard what they will be doing with their items.)

Most other contest can be fairly easily moved as complete tables, based on what I saw last year. (Pick up the table with their stuff on it and move it to a new location, and the contest has been moved.)

I heard Russ is still in charge of the contest area, so you might want to run this idea by him and see if he sees other problems, or logistical issues that could make this location difficult to use, based on the planning for this area that he has in the works.
(It is much easier to have solutions to foreseeable problems before they are encountered than when they are encountered.)

Good luck! :-)

I'll be in Vegas for DC this year and would be glad to throw down some hard hitting industrial-techno (hard techno, powernoise, industrial) once again..

I'd also be glad to collaborate on a surround sound audio system w/ whoever would like to set one up.. I've started an audio hardware company working on a box to facilitate this kind of thing.. This kind of thing will work great for chill area, but be a little out of budget (for additional speakers) for B&W.

A picture of a recent temporary installation w/ a view of our prototype box in some picts I did out here in SF:

Wow. I need to check here more often.

One thing about recording/broadcasting sets is this: Some artists have done remixes/bootlegs/exclusive songs that are not to be played in an environment that is recorded.

If a big room on the ground floor is taken over, you could actually have DJs playing all day/night. Having projectors with visuals would be pretty rad as well.

I would rather give up these "exclusive" songs in turn for the ability to record. IMHO people care more about personal freedom to record over DJ's freedom to play songs they don't want recorded.

Some artists have done remixes/bootlegs/exclusive songs that are not to be played in an environment that is recorded.i agree with hackajar 100%... or maybe my position is even more extreme, since i can't imagine that one should reasonably expect DefCon to be an environment that is super-sensitive to anyone's personal expectations of intellectual property or copyright.

i know that i don't give a damn about those matters when i'm at a public venue listening to a speech or a performance, many of which i record. if folks don't want something that they've created to be disseminated and spread they can simply keep it in a vault in their basement. once it's out, it's out... hardly worth whining at that point.

A feature that is also available to people that don't want to check the forums all of the time is "subscribe to this thread" (see the "Thread Tools" link, top of thread, right side, left of "Search this thread" which is left of "Display Mode")

Once you subscribe to a thread, you will get one email letting you know when someone has posted to it, UNLESS:
1) You previously received an email notice of a reply to any thread you have subscribed to, but have not visited the forums since that message was posted.
2) You showed up as still logged in when the message was posted. (If you don't "Log Out" then it can take 30 to 60 minutes for the forums to expire your session.)
3) Your email address is invalid, or unreachable by the forums mail server.

Then maybe the contests that are difficult to move can be placed along a shared wall, to allow the other, more easily moved contest to be, um, more easily moved to make more space as needed.

In the spirit of DT's last post... anyone up for an Acid band playing during daytime or B&W breakout lounge area, etc.? This is Shagghie (winner of last year's badge hacking contest, for those that don't know me). I've got a small gig here in San Diego that does live Acid jamming performances that can go for hours on end. Serious hard core gear, too. We' d just need a PA, preferably something with a sub...our synths go sub audio in search of brown notes not as yet discovered. Would be cool, too, to let other peeps 'jack in' to the midi clock with their own 303's, etc...or just some of our gear if they have the inclination/skillz? We can do 90 bpm dub style acid, or we can do 127- 140 bpm hardstyle... or whatever's in between. And it gets pretty far out there, so have to be careful with the scene bunnys so they don't fall down, etc. Ideas, thoughts? I'm here to help!

Last year it was BlackBeetle that posted the request in the forums as a call for content in the booklet.

The last person to post about the booklet and CD this year was Nikita (here.) She included contact email addresses too. She might be able to help you with an answer if you have no response from BlackBeetle.

Also, if you will be on the contest floor, as an Event on the contest floor, Russ might also be a person to contact too.

I'm bringing my acid hardware with me... any other acid musicians/ technical operators in the house? E.g., any else know how to drive elektrons, jomox's, and Future Retro's??? I may or may not have fellow musicianhaxors coming with me this year, so I'm actively soliciting other artists who might want to jam with my gear or their own. In fact... a massive defcon acid party live would be...well, insane!

Who else can bring real hardware or samplers to the show?

ANother option: I have a RedSound mini thingy that converts DJ vinyl BPM to midi clock, and a midi merger, so that if there are any DJ's that spin acid /acid house, acid jungle, etc. let me know...we can work something out with your tables and my gear... delicious!

leave message here, PM, or pwn me on myspace bandsite: /shagghie

nice.... do you do micro-loop/sample style grooving, ala faderfox, or do you mean just arranging full tracks for a dj set, or combo thereof, or?

What style will you be bringin'? If you can send me some clock, I can lay down some sick basslines and acid leads with the FR-777 or the TM3030... And bring the jomox kick into the groove ala carte...

Looks like I have enough musicians now to do some serious acid damage... if anyone else wants to participate, now's the time to speak up. At this point, only bring one piece of gear, or just borrow ours. We have too many machines already as it is.

What's the scoop on organizing floor space and PA time? BYO PA? I'm driving in a GTi from San Diego, so that's a bit tough!

Yeah, no doubt! That's right up our acid alley, style-wise.

Ok, but now, do we have a sense for where/when there will be a PA during the day? Will there be multiple locations/PA's to play from set up? At this rate, one doesn't look like it will be enough! :p

@Staff: so will there be music besides b&w ball?
well, I have everything on my laptop, so I'm set :)

Now that's hawt! Just the think we've been looking for for our acid live set...

I still don't understand how all this goest together, PA-wise. Will there be multiple PA's located around the campus? I'm wondering if we should set up an improvised 'calendar' to quasi-organize time? I'm bringing my beatmaster counterpart along with me, and we'll be able to do our own submixing with our gear...but we still need a stereo PA to jack into, and of course...time alotted.
We can acid jam live on our gear for hours on end...so as much time as is feasible, and whatever PA location is clever. I was kind of thinking of setting up in one of the sky lounges this year....if only to help with the security of our hardware... since we are BYOAM's (Bring yo' own acid machines).

How does playing the cello alongside 303 basslines sound to you, btw? I might bring my horn as well. We could run you through the SP-404, and let a minion twiddle your FX knobs while you play, etc...

Seriously though...what's up with calendar/PA-reservation?

Our new band name.

Ok, well... all I know is that if i'm dragging my gear at 140mph and 120 deg.far., and along with my producer and acid cohort, well, I just hope there's a PA to jack into when i get there.

I can bring a electrotribe mk11, a dx-200 and a microkorg to jam with yah.

Yeah... I only know of two PAs. Bink's B/W Ball set up and the Green Sector PA belonging to Shadowvex. I don't know what the plans are with the PA.

If you're playing at the Balls, it should be provided.

However, if you are into renegade parties and skyboxen and stuff like that and are in a position where bringing gear isn't a big issue, i'd recommend it. Most everyone flys into Defcon, and bringing gear is a nightmare. TSA has all ready broken a part off of one of my 1200s, so i'm done flying with my 1200s.

Ok, this allows me to ask my earlier question (again). What do skyboxen and other locations use for a PA? Are there going to be multiple PA's we can all share for these live sets and chill sets, etc.? How do we 'reserve' such units?

I would say its all bring your own...and get in touch with the people who are throwing the skyboxen parties to secure said gear. That's the part where you gotta be proactive.

Glad you're up for it! Cello + 303 would be great! I'll be doing all my processing in Logic through a MOTU Traveler, so we'll throw some reverb on there to fatten it up. When I play violin I use an Alesis AirFX so I can jack up the sound without needing a free hand for a knob / fader. If someone else wants to loop / modulate / filter the strings they're more than welcome too!

Not sure who is coming with me...potentially the Warr guitarist from Edifice - in that case I know he'll be up for a jam too :-D If you haven't seen a Warr guitar, it's the 12-string beast in this promo pic: http://rustcycle.com/edificePromo4.jpg

I'm somewhere between pitching a tent and putting my tail between my legs...

YES! I'll be bringing a MH2882 and an X-Sum mixer so we can sum all the parts and go 'straight to tape', or we could multi-track too for post production goodness later on.

I can't imagine what that guitar sounds like! I have a nice E-H 2ube pre with some vintage telefunken tubes in there that break apart really nice. If we threw your mono cello sig into that and put each tube in series we could get some nice over-driven cello saturation going, and plenty of gain along the way. Have you tried tube distortion on it yet? i can't say i've heard that yet! whatever you like to run, it will be good. I'll bring the 2ube for fun if you want...

I can't say I know who's throwing the skyboxen partees this year... but if we kixor ass when we get set up, perchance Ceazar would fancy an acid gig? :p
I'll hit him up for us...

I'll be bringing my laptop and yamaha ux-256. And possibly an electribe A mk ii and an MPC 2000. I'll get some nice samples ready ahead of time.

I'll be getting in to town early on Thursday morning.

You guys all at the Riv? (we are)

Ok, last but not least.... does anyone know any scoop on a PA system for us 'live jammers'? I don't know who or what's up in the skyboxen.... I was kind of hoping poolside like AP-style...but can you do that at the Riv without being arrested or homeless?

I'm staying at the Riv, showing up on Tuesday.

Cool 'lope!

yeah, I was afraid of that. last year some twit threw just one plastic cup off a balcony that landed 30 feet from a security guard patrolling that pool and 50 seconds later the penthouse renegade raging room party was shut down and dismantled for good.

We need a playground, not a frigging ward!

OK, I'm pretty sure if we need a 3rd PA, a couple 'a decks and a mixer, we could pool together and rent a set.... skippy's got the RAM 1500 again this year. :)
But now, ironically, if the PA's aren't the challenge, sounds like it might be a LOCATION to accomadate all of us technoids!

I've secured an ER-1 for the funness. I'll get those samples chopped up into glitchy goodness this weekend. I've also got a small handful of guitar effects pedals for general audio destruction. Unfortunately I won't be bringing the A or the MPC but with Renoise and the ER-1 I figure we should be able to shit out some audio gold.

Wow...wtf is that thing? Can you send me some .mp3 of that Radio Shack action?
How come I haven't seen one of these???

It's the newest incarnation of the RadioShack 300-in-1 project lab thingies. I had 2 of those when I was a kid (probably in the parents basement somewhere). The newest one still has springs for shit like poteniometers, speaker, transformer, leds, etc. but instead of having all the components embedded in the middle, it has breadboards and loose components. The annoying thing is that all of the discrete components aren't labeled with the values, so you either sit there with look up tables or an LCR meter for identifying components. (.1 uF caps were labeled '104' and such)

Built on it was a voltage controlled oscillator. Pitch was controlled by the buttons on the bottom with which let you play the notes from a fifth chord. Root of the chord varied based on the position of one of the potentiometers. The other pot controlled the amplitude. The VCO was based on a FM Mims design using a 555 timer IC. It was plugged into the er-1 which was used for gating and delay as well as a acidy drum line. When you touched the cap on the output circuit the tone got really nice and nasty.

A few drinks later I tried to add an additional 555 and set up a feedback loop. Unfortunately either I was too drunk to draw out the schematic properly or I was too drunk to connect the wires correctly. There was a high-pitched (migrane-inducing) tone I could control with the voltage input but not to the point where it was low enough to be useful.

Unfortunately there's no mp3s. My buddy didn't have the appropriate cables handy and I didn't have my laptop there.

The ER-1 should be great.... and if you are chopping up samples, what are you bringing for a sampler!?

Samples will be trigged through Reason running on my laptop. Renoise and Reason are the only reason I ever boot into Windows anymore.

At this point the gear list is:
o Laptop running renoise
o Yamaha UX-256 midi interface
o Korg ER-1
o Akai MPC24 midi controller
o Alesis Nanoverb
o Shitty minimixer
o Flask of whisky
o Ungodly amounts of red bull

How many people are in at this point? Has a jamming location been confirmed? I can set up the gear in about 3x3' of table space.

Oh and if anybody wants to pay for frieght I can bring my Allen & Heath SR-424 :)

Ok, so like, no idea about a location. I'd personally like to have a sky boxen...
But whom do we contact to find out what parties (read: people/clubs/haxor groups) have what boxen and whether they'd enjoy some livesound PA acid jamming mood music. *cough* Bueller?
