View Full Version : BBQ Update

This is a place holder for this year’s official planning and information about the BBQ schedule location and general beat blitzkrieg.

From the size of our BBQ last year we have had to make a couple changes mainly to the location we are currently bidding on renting out a section of park. By doing this we will increase the amount of room we have to spread out and try and give us dedicated room for the titanium chief and well as for our special meat grills and community grills. That and with a rented section they can’t shut us down (as fast). If you have any question or concerns that are vital to the planning or inner workings of the BBQ feel free to PM me.

More to come….

i pretty much haven't gotten my act together yet, and I know londo has been pre-occupied with life. godminus is so busy I haven't seen him around the ether for ages .. but we'll get there :) so no lists or concalls quite yet.

to my knowledge the current location state is same spot as last year, if not a better spot than last year.

I just watched Apocalypse Now and had a great idea. Can we chop up a cow on the spot?you know that water buffalo was actually killed during the shoot? that wasn't any special effect or prop mock-up... the crew just happened to be in the locals' village when they were performing a seasonal ritual and caught it all on film.

We can use the same excuse then.totally.

"we have no idea what all that fuss is about, officers. we just saw a bunch of people dancing in a circle around a pit of fire and hacking at a large moose. oh, these grills? well, we wouldn't want the meat to go to waste now, would we?"

Shortly after last con, I did a remake of the Toxic BBQ website, its all ready to go, just lacking details as far as time, place, ect.. Past info that was still relevant has been move over into the new site. Assuming you guys still have the login info from last year, accounts are still valid and you should be able to login to update content.

The T-shirts were somewhat a bust last year.. I still have a box of them. So hopefully some of them left over will go this year.

I'll be new to the BBQ and DC this year, so I don't have past experience to guide my questions:

- What food runs out first? What's the highest demand?
- How long does the BBQ last for?

I'll be new to the BBQ and DC this year, so I don't have past experience to guide my questions:

- What food runs out first? What's the highest demand?
Depends on what you bring and what your willing to share. Most people bring hamburgers, brats, and dogs. My group normally brings the above the items along with buns, don't forget buns. We always bring extra so others that might not have brought enough can still enjoy some food, plus the leftover goodies get taken back for the Goons who had to work during the BBQ.

Some folks bring steaks, but I'll let someone who has brought steaks in the past let you know what they did or what happened.

- How long does the BBQ last for?
Till the police show up and kick us out of the park or we leave on our own, which ever one happens first.

Myself and the other members from Titanium Chef's Team Smoke will be supplying some Smoked Pork Ribs and Chicken. We are planning on doing about 20 racks of ribs and 10 yard birds so there will be more than enough food to go around for anyone who wants to try it.

And just to make sure the goons get fed, we will fix up a tray to take back to the Riv. Is there anyone who can assist us in getting that food to them?

Yup, that is what is being worked on resolving at tbbq central.

Also of note from prior comment, I don't believe feeding the goons is 100% payoff.. being an asshat will still bring their wrath, but sending them booze and food makes them less likely to single you out as a squeak toy.

As a Goon of several years, I attended my 1st TBBQ last year. I also brought some steaks, a case of beer, a bag of charcoal (don't forget charcoal for the grill), some paper plates and plastic cutlery.

Godminusone cooked my Ribeyes, and did an AMAZING job of preparing them with an awesome dry rub, and cooked them perfectly. If you bring steaks, be prepared to WAIT for the cooks to get to them, as they are working on some very large grills, with approximately 20-30 lbs of meat over the fire at any time. Please remember to respect and tip your cooks. (bringing them beer and water helps.)

Lastly, I have an idea for the TBBQ committee, the guys who cooked last year were really getting cooked (no pun intended) by the heat output of the grills. Someone should find some aluminized aprons, or nomex aprons to keep the heat off of them...

Something like: http://www.professionalequipment.com/aluminum-work-apron-30inch-722ar/coveralls/

Hello,

I own a Barbecue restaurant here in Las Vegas (BBQ Shak; http://www.bbqshak.com) and was wondering if we were permitted to take part in this event as well?

If yes, is their any special requirements and are we allowed to semi-same day smoke our meats (It takes hours for our meats to successfully finish smoking) and then bring them and cook them on location? Also how much food is required and is it for the public to sample or special judges?

In addition, are you having any food vendors (For profit) that are Barbecue related? If we are allowed, what permits must be obtained?

Thanks,
Lance

Its up to the group, but generally its a free for all BBQ. IM sure one of the more SR folks here could speak much better to your request.

What is hooch wars? Also, we are more then just a Barbecue restaurant. We also do pastries, Nilla Wafer Vanilla Bean Banana Pudding (Infused with a french pastry cream), Cheesecakes (Strawberry, Plain (Vanilla bean), Butterfingers, Oreo, etc), Red Velvet Cake, and so many other desserts not to mention the spin on Cookies and Brownies (Almost all of our desserts have been in contests and Award Winning).

Either way, I am more then happy to donate anything for anything if their are no prizes and what not.

If you don't have a pre-arranged ride, there are two meet-up times at the Riviera (one for the food run and one for the moochers ... err people who plan ahead and buy ahead of time). I think they are usually at the foot of the skybox stairs.

Just a heads-up, I have not had luck in the past with the food run meet-up time.

I think for DC15 and DC14 Iprovided a google maps links with the gps long/lat, assuming the location is the same:

Post from DC15
Google maps url (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=36.068653,-115.1129&spn=0.001108,0.001888&z=19)
Scrape from that URL provides ll=36.068653,-115.1129
Longitude and Latitude are yours!
Which would map out to 36.068653º N , 115.1129º W

Follow the google maps link to a sat view of the tables, centered over view.

Enjoy!

I dont know what time Im heading out to the BBQ site yet, I missed all the Titanium Chef action last year. I wouldnt mind getting there a bit early to kick back before the chaos hits.

According to http://www.taxi.state.nv.us/FaresFees.htm
Distance for cab ride is about 7.5 miles.
$3.50 Pickup Fee + 7.5 miles * 2.60 = $23

I think I remember it being about $16 but with gas prices going up
maybe the fares went up as well. Hasnt been a parking problem yet since
most people taxi, carpool ect.. no charge for parking. Parking is available right
next to the BBQ location. (Assuming its the same location)

As far as I know at this moment, the BBQ site is the same site as previous years.
Im an organizer, and I dont even have a definite on this. If I hear otherwise I will let you know.

Any news on exact location would be really helpful. As some of you know, myself and the other members of Team Smoke are smoking ribs and chicken for BBQ goers and will need to be at the park by about 11 am to start that process.

Thanks to all of the donations and the person willing to step up and put their name on the paper, we have cleared the permit hurdle with the park and its other requirements to fulfill that permit. The same BBQ that has sustained the last 4 Defcons will return this year with more mustard than you can handle.

--- organizational notes

As last year .. if folks want a coordinated food run, someone should step up and organize one. I chaotically tried the first few years and flooding the Sams/Costco with hackers was simply amazing, but extremely difficult to touch off. While TBBQ organizers-proper are not currently organizing a coordinated food run, I *highly* encourage one or many of the attendees to do so.

The one and only requirement is BYO and safety (ie, ick glass, no trashcan heap coolers, etc). If you want to share, that is awesome! TBBQ itself cannot supply food or drink.

Try and catch me in the hotel after lunch and I'll let you know if I have any room left in the car. I think I have obligated two seats already and not sure about the 3rd.

So what are the meet up times? When does it start?

Officially at 1800 usually. However given that a lot of people show up earlier, bring sun screen and get there any time after about 1700. (6 pm and 5 pm respectively)

Do they charge for parking if I dare say rent a vehicle? Would love to spend at least part of the day lost in the desert; love the SW. I need to see stars without the city pink in the way.

Nope. There is no charge for parking at the hotel or at the park.

Hey now! Don't bring me into this! I am not a Toxic BBQ Organizer. The only thing I run around here is, well, I don't run anything but my fingers. :-)

Seriously though, I am not an organizer for this event. I only provided the location that was previously used with the qualifier, "assuming the location is the same." The actual organizers for this event are listed in the toxi bbq forum, "thread view" in the lower right corner: GodMinusOne, L0nd0, KeLviN, [Syntax], che, renderman, Siviak ) These are the people that can make comments about the planning with authority. Those people and several others are the ones that do the work.

Devaint Ollam's reply to mine saying I was incorrect is the last good, known update on location. (Thanks Deviant Ollam.)

Londo is the one that mentioned a new location for this year's Toxic BBQ and then later said he would update his post with the new location. I didn't read his post until after I posted the location it had been using with the qualification, "assuming the location is the same."

Nothing more specific than that.

I think the location is going to be kept secret, and become item in the Scavenger Hunt, or maybe Clued. ]:> Maybe, this is a method they will use to limit visitors to only those that can find it, or know someone who can tell them -- kind of like how some raves worked.

Let's put it this way. I, personally, am solid on the location. The participants of the Titanium Chef Challenge will also be, once they get their instruction sheet at the meetup or get a txt message from me.

We (the Titanium Chef teams and staff) will be at the BBQ way earlier than everyone else. If you find us, you will be in good shape. (We're not talking about Central Park or Fairmount Park here... Sunset Park isn't that big. You won't get left out or lost as long as you show up remotely in the right area of the city.) Our event is wrapping up at around 5:00 PM and the biggest BBQ crowds don't start showing up until at least 6:00.

The best thing you can do to help support the BBQ event and to wind up totally cool is to...

1. Show up with some goods of your own (food, booze, etc) so that we don't have a moocher problem

2. Park away from the BBQ event area (the main parking lot is awesome... just walk over to where you see us) so you're not making our scene wicked-crowded with vehicles. As long as it's not Sam's Hot Car Lot things are in good shape.

3. Pick up your trash as you leave. No matter how loud or numerous we are, i'll wager dollars to doughnuts that the powers that be will draw 90% of their opinion about us from how we leave the area. So please, just get your shit into a trash can (or even better, grab a contractor bag from one of the staffers and put all your stuff in that, tie it off, and put it by a refuse bin)

these are just my suggestions to make the event go well and to keep everyone happy. i'm guessing that Londo or the other top brass of the BBQ will make a more formal post tomorrow, etc. it will all be great. just show up and be cool and we're halfway there.

I have another thought on conspiracies related to the location:
Since some people that go to the BBQ also go to BlackHat, we know that some will have left for Las Vegas by now. This delay in location information is designed to encourage people to bring their desktop and laptop computers with them to Defcon, so they can touch down, get on the forums this weekend, and find the location of the Toxic BBQ. It is a conspiracy to encourage people to bring their computers with them to BlackHat and Defcon. It is a social engineering attempt. Obey! Conform! Bring your computers to Defcon!

Am I chiding the organizers too much? ]:>

/me ducks and runs for cover.

I interpreted that into being the same grill and you had already posted where it used to be. so I didn't feel that I was dragging you into this. I tried to make a point that I wasn't sure as I too have long been under the impression that it would not be at the same location so that statement confused me.

I was fishing for clarification of the same bbq statement and I'm sorry if my post might confuse people and direct them to the wrong place.

Not so sure about the conspiracy thing, BBQ isn't exactly a top secret, show up and have fun! Seriously, nothing new this year.

If it needs more aura, lost says to consider finding the BBQ as the easiest part of the mystery box contest.

But finding the BBQ is the Best part, but when you do find it you'll notice that it’s in the same place that it was before. Also there is a very large parking lot that is across the park unfortunately it isn’t very close but it has a lot of room.

Everyone have a safe trip out to Vegas.

Don't worry about it. The Smiley at the end of my comment :-) was meant to show I was not angry, upset or scolding anyone. I'm really not that scary -- really!

Ah! Hah! So, it is in the same location in Sunset Park used in all of the other Toxic BBQ?

Don't destroy the conspiracy theory I'm trying to create! I'm on a roll! ]:>

It looks like you all have the Toxic BBQ planning ready. Congrats to you all.

regarding location, i wanted to point out a quick note to all parties who are driving to the Park... be mindful of the multitude of streets with "sunset" in their name that surround the area. I've worked up a little map from my private satellite that i keep orbiting the earth in order to monitor poeples' ex-wives, etc for a fee...

http://deviating.net/toxicbbq/public_map.jpg

... i'll let the event's more formal organizers edit this post and / or delete that map if it shows the wrong details, but it would be great if people enter on Sunset Park Road (as opposed to Ave) and park in the really large lot indicated there. it's a very short walk to the area where we'll be set up with grills, etc. (about 200 feet) so park where there's plenty of room, walk with the lake to your left side, and you'll come to the area with lots of reddish-beige stones. You'll also clearly see the Titanium Chef people and possibly Gadsden and/or Pirate flags hanging from trees.

see you there!

I'll just toss this out here again... I'm a local with an SUV who's happy to deliver food (trays, plates, etc) to the goons and staff stuck back at the Riviera.

Also, I plan on bringing a "construction crew" style beverage cooler/dispenser thingie of my famous white peach sangria to share with anyone interested.

Pls feel free to PM me if I can be of assistance to Titanium Chef or Toxic BBQ in general.

I'll have roughly 5 gallons of the stuff with me... along with a hefty supply of the world's best bupcakes with chocolate-almond frosting. (I'm hoping they'll survive the heat if I freeze them after frosting!)

So I'm just assuming I can help deliver trays of food to the Goons back at the Riv. Anyone know if a gallon thermos jug of white peach sangria would be appreciated by Goons, or would it just torment them with it's alcoholic goodness?

I haven't decided what time Im heading over the BBQ site yet, I wont have a vehicle to get there, will have 2 boxes of stuff to lug over there which prevents me from stopping at Sams or a gas station, taxi wait time would be killer. Im thinking about heading over to the site around 3:30ish to catch part of Titanium Chef and begin setup of the area.

If anyone is interested in getting there around this time. Drop me a line and some way to contact you so that we can meet up to head out.

Any locals want to link to a google map of the best/closest place to pickup supplies?
I should be arriving with a decent amount of double IPA homebrew but it might also be good to pickup a couple things like cups/napkins/plates/more beer. Sure google local works but I figured someone on dc-forms knows an insider ToxicBBQ tip.

I was wondering if there was anyway we could get all the teams together before the bbq? I'm hoping we can bulk buy some meat or find out which places will be the best to go to? I'm sure you locals can prolly point us in the right direction...
I'll be getting in wednesday morning, pm message me to trade phone numbers.

-edit
whoops, i didn't realize we were going to Sam's Club. I would rather not have to buy food prep stuff (knives, apron, etc), drop me a line if you can help me out.

Booze and food is *ALWAYS* appreciated by the Goons.
Just keep it away from CJunkie.. he tends to drink it all for himself.
