In the name of research...
Nerds know more math, and geeks are more likely to be somewhat obsessive. I also think Geeks are less likely to want a 'normal' life, and probably more able to grow out of it and have one if desired. Of course, I am just pulling this out of my ass. :)
i consider the main difference between geeks and nerd is, a nerd has a better GPA. a geek is just as smart but doesnt care.
geeks band together so we have friends. nerds don't.
proud to be a geek.
To me a geek is anyone who is willing to call him or herself a geek. I'm a geek. To be a Nerd (in my book) you have to take this to a whole new level of pockect protector madness. A nerd is someone who should really need to leave the basement a little more often. Spend some time socializing. You can be intellegent, but still cool. Then you are a geek. But someone can be a nerd and not have a clue what they are talking about. then there those who are cool, and I should clarify that by cool I mean sociable, and think they know a lot, those people are assholes. I was in a class today where my professor said something that might clarify this:
no one can claim to be an expert on everything that is unix/linux, you can specialize in a bunch of things, but you can never know all there is to know about it.
anyone who claims they do is: an asshole
that mentality carries over into all of hacking. back in the day the technology was less sophisticated, a hacker could know almost everything about hacking, phreaking, etc. now you can't do that. there's no way to know all about everything. it is only possible now to specilize in a specific part of a specific field of hacking. the technology moves too quick to stay on top of all of it. we all know at least a little bit about alot and know alot abouut a little bit.
it would be interesting to see what everyone views as their strong point of hacking. (netwerk "exploration", coding, social engineering, etc.)
I would definitly (if forced) label myself a geek. I just hate labels though. I get out and socialize. Would a group of hackers/geeks be considered socializing? I think so.
My strong point would have to be network exploration I think. I just cant get on a computer and not explore its boundrys. Anyone else feel like that?
