They died because 40 year old men found it acceptable to wear them in fluorescent colors. When you see a big burly man pulling his wallet out of a purple and green fanny pack. it just kills them.

It was a fashion fad when it was simply the "fanny pack" (early 90's) but has since been reincarnated as the "specialized fanny pack/lumbar pack/butt pack". Note the addition of "specialized" allows manufacturers and retailers to charge considerably more for the sdt (same damn thing). They also come with hydration system options now.

So actually you are on the cutting edge in rugged, outdoor fashion if you are sporting one of these "specialized" packs. They are pretty popular with the active outdoor enthusiast.

You can also have people like the Tactical Tailor custom make them for you (so you get all the bells and whistles that you want). Or you can search out for that cheap plastic buckle and replace the busted ones on yours.
