  • Short Story Contest

I've decided that the Short story contest will return this year, but it will be my last year of running it. If this contest will continue, I want to turn it over to a new leader, perhaps one of this years volunteer judges will be interested. I don't want to just Kill it by quitting, I want to see it grow into a bigger and better thing every year and I have a lot of other DEF CON responsibility that prevent me from investing in making this "cooler".

If you are interested in judging for the contest please contact me at nikita at defcon dot org.

New for this year, we will be putting ALL of the short story entries on the Conference DVD and we will be listing the winners in the Conference program in a short blurb, letting everyone know they can check the forums and dvd to read more.
Also possibly new for this year is the DEF CON Forum meet proposed a short story reading and a sort of meet the author event, that's a real possibility in the works. As time goes on and we get closer to the show, other events may tie into the short story contest, that has yet to be determined, but I am hopeful.

As for now, here is what you need to know.

The contest is now open and will close June 1st, 2012.
People choice poll will be opened and it will close June 10th, at that time all winners will be announced.

Please submit to nikita at defcon dot org.
Please submit ONLY in a .txt file.
Please keep your short stories, an actual SHORT story. Leave the manuscripts and 404 page novels to your publisher and agents.

Please keep your stories in tune with our community, we want stories about hackers, hacking, science, technology, nerdy things, geeky things, zombie things. And here is the catch: We want you to tie your stories in with the DEF CON Conference itself. So if you write about zombies chasing a group of young folk, they better be at our con, staving off a hoard of the undead while building a lab to find a cure for the T Virus.
Am I being unreasonable in this requirement....maybe. Don't care. I'd like to read stories about DEF CON 1 to DEF CON 19, names changed to protect the guilty of course :) . You could write about that time at DC 9 at the AP, where you and your buddies took it upon yourself to inflict havoc and mayhem by....or maybe you want to pretend you were there and write about it. Fine by me, write it up! Now's your chance Mr. Thompson.

Please...no hair tussling in the breeze bodice ripping stories you can find for .25 cents in the romance bin, no matter how you dress it up with tech, it's not worth it to me read nerd porn unless it's a tiger direct or fry's circular.

What do you get if you win?

First place winner will receive two human badges.
Second place winner will receive one human badge.
Peoples choice winner ( voted by the community) will receive one human badge.
Everyone will get their story on the DVD, and the winners will be announced in the program.

I've been asked if this is an award ceremony worthy contest, In my opinion no. The award ceremony is TOO DAMN LONG and Since this happens BEFORE DEF CON, this will not be mentioned at the awards ceremony, and the winners will instead get recognition in the printed program.

    Tips for winning:

    Spell check.
Follow the rules as mentioned above.
    Write a good story.
DON'T Send me PM's on the forum, I seriously hate that, just email me.

You can follow me on twitter at Niki7a if you want to, If this seems an exciting method of communication then maybe I will make a short story contest twitter account...do people want that?

Grammar and punctuation are important too, especially apostrophe use. </my_pet_peeve>

      Eh, punctuation... Yes, somewhat...

      Grammar... Not so much.

Last year we didn't take points off for improper usage of grammar. It's really about whether the story made sense and flowed well. I expect the same will be the case for this year.

But, we're not anal bitches... Well, not that kind of anal anyway.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

If it is obvious from the style of writing that bad grammar is part of a character's persona, it isn't as important.

Punctuation does matter, it can totally change the meaning of a sentence and do damage to story flow, so CHECK THAT before submitting. Spelling is important for the same reason. If it is used to specify the SOUND of a character, make sure it is punctuated correctly to attribute it to a particular character. A spell checker and a grammar checker are free with any text editor, there is no excuse to not use it.

Last year leeway was given to some degree but it did affect ranking if it was just too damned obvious that it arose from sheer laziness. Be proud of your work! It is a $200 dollar prize (admission) make the piece worth it.

But "ziplock" wasn't really speaking about the contest, "ziplock" was taking a shot at Nikita.

Um..so that shouldn't be in this thread then? And...now I am totally confused. My reply still stands, regardless of this "ziplock" reply that may or may not have been an attack on Nikita? FFS, non verbal cues in a text based environment will be the death of modern society one day.

              Re: Short Story Contest

I have NO IDEA what is going on. Grammar, punctuation, and even to a degree spelling, are my WORST qualities. So If I did mess up, I have no idea and I would appreciate clarification so I can learn from my mistakes, otherwise I will never learn.

As for "taking a shot at me" Ziplock will be a judge this year too and he happens to be one of the kindest and coolest guys I know. I love him and think he's amazing, I happen to know he wouldn't call me out in a negative manner and would probably politely tell me my wrong doings before dragging me into the fire. :-) Seriously, he is a really cool person.

I mess up all time, I am NOT perfect, which is why I have said before if *I* can point out your issues, you are seriously screwed.
I agree with the other points you both have made tho.

As for judges, to make an official announcement:

              Eris
              Highwiz
              Ziplock
              Bbox
              *Possibly one more person*

I know a dude who goes by 'myself' on the internets. He's a pretty cool guy and doesn't afraid of anything.

Looks like I had my calendar set to remind me to post all winners on the 15th. Apologies for the delay everyone. Due to unexpected deadline shifts and a heavy workload at speaker org, the announcement will have to wait till the 15th.

When do you want us judges to give you our votes and in what format would you like them?

If answer to above is not posted publicly, I would like to know also.

Looks like I failed to mail Bbox for his vote...I'm again sorry for the delay. If it helps to know, I'm suffering immensely, and I should have taken Eris up on her wilingness to take direction for me :-)

You guys may be happy to know I will retire this year and someone more coordinated will step up :-)

Well my #1 choice placed 2nd and was the "People's Choice" winner.
My #2 and #3 choices did not appear on the top 3.

I don't know about the rest of you but I had a very difficult choice in picking a top three this year. There were a number of very good submissions making it hard to eliminate some. With my number 3, I had to roll the dice between three stories.
