  • Why you should join Be The Match's registry

We all understand that by being on the Be The Match registry you might be selected to donate and save a life at no financial cost to yourself. However, not enough people are registered to prevent the continual loss of life. Here are the facts (marrow.org):
    • Every year, more than 10,000 patients in the U.S. are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma for which a marrow or cord blood transplant from an unrelated donor may be their best or only hope of a cure.
    • Most patients (about 70 percent) in need of a transplant do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on the NMDP’s Be The Match Registry® to find an unrelated donor or cord blood unit.
    • Be The Match facilitates more than 5,200 transplants a year.
This means thousands die each year without finding a match. Fortunately, there is a viable match for every patient in need of a marrow transplant - it's just a matter of getting that viable match to join the registry, which is why we are again holding a registry drive at DefCon this year... so that hopefully a match can be made and a donor selected for a patient that would not have had a match at all without us hackers. So spread the word and let everyone know about this event... and swing by during the con and sign up yourself! It's a numbers game, so lets see if we can improve the odds. :)
