  • DC19 : CONTEST / EVENTS - REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

    ------ START OF TRANSMISSION ----------

    Good Morning World,
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to help us make DEF CON 19 amazing for the security community, hackers, hacktivists, privacy pros, and newbies that show up every year.

The Rio has welcomed us by giving us their entire conference space,160,000 square feet! The main contest area is massive and there are several break out rooms. We plan to double our efforts and size so you think you're big enough for one of the breakout spaces, then let me know and I'll try to accommodate your request. Please be patient
with me and understand that I'm working within the confines of the space provided, along with hotel and union restrictions.

    1. This year there *MIGHT* be additional resources to help the events & contests with costs of expanding and becoming bigger and better. So you have an earth shattering idea but your tight on cash, submit your idea and tell me how we can help.

    2. As with previous years, there will be changes in which contests get a Black Badge. Please don't advertise that you're getting one to hand out until I've given you the confirmation. Contests that do not use their space creatively are likely candidates to lose their Black Badge status. Contests that are very popular and get the most attention are
good candidates to receive a Black Badge. Newer contests have lesser chance of a Black Badge as well, if it's your first year you will REALLY have to knock it out of the park to get a Black Badge (it's only happened once that I can think of).

    3. We will have a pre-con contest meeting (Wednesday before Con) for ALL contest and event Points Of Contact (POCs). You need to plan to be there, and if you absolutely can't attend, you will need to let me know well in advance. This meeting is where we will discuss any last minute changes, introduce you to the goon staff, set ground rules, and give you your contest badges. If you fail to attend this meeting or you don't let me know that you will be absent your contest or event will be cancelled and your space awarded to one of the many people who would be happy to have it.

    4. Please fill out the entire form. If there are additional requests, favors owed, comments or other important commitments, please let me know when you submit this form. All RFI's must be submitted by June 1st.

    5. Please make provisions to bring your own prizes this year. Hit up the various vendors and tell them that it's for DEF CON, you might be surprised by how giving they are. It's best to come prepared so no one is disappointed.

    6. In the past, DEF CON has not provide free badges for contest POCs. This year all official contests will receive two contest badges, and approved unofficial contests will get a single human badge.

    7. The Contest Description, Name, and POC name will all be included in the DEF CON program, so please ensure it's how you like it. If you don't give me your information in plenty of time, you will not be included in the program, and that would just be sad.

    8. Please provide links to any webpages, Facebook page, Twitter names, Flicker feeds, etc. This year we are going to help promote contests with the DEF CON Facebook page and Twitter feed. If you will be tweeting updates please let us know. We will create a Twitter list so attendees can easily follow all the action, and provide constant Facebook updates. Be sure to get on that list!

    9. Remember that you will need to be creative with your space and bring your own signs, booth gear, decorations, etc. You may NOT put anything on the conference area walls. Remember to check the secret forum for conference space rules and regulations.

    10. You are NOT allowed to sell ANYTHING at your tables, Period. If you want to sell something, you need to contact the Vendor Dept. Head, Roamer (Roamer (AT) DefCon (Dot) org) for information on the Vendor Area, or speak with an already approved Vendor to share space. If you are a non-profit and you would like to discuss fund raising options
    please contact me directly.

    11. You will, as always, be asked to provide continuous updates about your contest to the information booth based on forms to be provided to you at the Pre-Con meeting. The time of the Pre-Con meeting will be provided to you once your contest or event has been approved.

    12. As a reminder you will need to find me (Pyr0) and provide a final score and update for your contest NO LATER THAN 2PM ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, FINAL DAY OF DEF CON. I will need it written or typed on a 8.5" x 11" piece of paper. These final scores and updates will also be what show up on the DEF CON website at the end of the conference, so ensure it says what you want it to say.

    13. In order to accommodate you being allowed early access to the contest area, I will need the names of up to three of your people, along with a clear digital picture (roughly 100x100dpi) that I can give to hotel security. Otherwise you're going to have issues getting in.

    14. Official contests are contests that have been approved and vetted. If this is your first year, expect to be approved as an "unofficial contest or event". Only approved "official" contests are eligible for Black Badge status, contest badges, and the "Goons Choice" event. If it is your first year and you REALLY bring it, The Dark Tangent and Pyr0 might switch your status so that you can qualify for these perks.

    DIRECTIONS:
Copy and Paste the form below into a PLAIN TEXT email and send it to:
    Pyr0 (at) defcon (dot) org

Re: DC19 : CONTEST / EVENTS - REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

The above applies to everyone that is planning to run a contest, event, party and use the space that Pyr0 and Russ manage. Pyr0 took over managing this space as a goon from Russ a few years back.

It does not matter if you presently have a forum or not... you need to follow the directions provided by Pyr0 to get the space and resources you want at Defcon.

In a month or two, I'll be contacting Pyr0 with a list of forums for contests / events that have organizers claiming to run them at Defcon, and synchronize our lists. If there is a forum for an event with claims to take place on the contest floor or other spaces that Pyr0 manages, and Pyr0 has no information about them, I'll close the forums associated with those events. (The forums follows the decisions made by Pyr0 and Russ on events in the contests/events space.)

For events not managed under the black umbrella-swiss-army-knife of Pyr0 in the contests/event space, you need to contact the people that run the space you plan to use. For example, 20,000 cent Hacker Pyramid would likely need to contact Nikita and work with her for space in the speaking tracks. I am not sure who "village people" :-D would talk to in order to get approval, but it probably won't be in "In the Navy" or at the "YMCA." ;-) It might be Grifter. Maybe someone that knows can let people know who that is.

For events that don't take place in the space controlled by Defcon goons, if you are a returning event, (DC Shoot, Toxic BBQ, etc.) then you can be grandfathered-in with a forum, since you were previously approved and nothing has changed. These are all "unofficial events."

If you plan on running a new event that won't be under Defcon, or in the Defcon space this year, then you will need some sort of approval from someone like Nikita, Pyr0, or Dark Tangent. (No. I don't approve any contests or events, but I will make a forum for one if one of those three people approves it and I confirm their approval through another channel.) One example of this might be PokerCon, which would require the organizers to work outside of Defcon channels, and directly with the Casino. It would almost certainly be unofficial, and have no direct affiliation with Defcon like the other events (probably for liability) other than taking place at the same time as the conference with people from the conference attending. (Obviously, DT gets to say otherwise, and you should take his word over mine in any of these claims.)

If you don't know which path is right for you, discuss it on the forums or elsewhere and make your decisions, and follow-through with planning.

Remember, the only person you can blame for missing deadlines is yourself.

I'll try to reply to this thread and draw attention to it every 3 weeks or so. Such "bumping-up" is against the rules, but as a mod, I get to abuse my authority. :-)

This thread is presently a permanent sticky-redirect at the top of "Defcon 19 Planning" and has a home here in "New Ideas." Clicking on either and replying will result in your post being in one shared thread.

    Thanks, and good luck!

Re: DC19 : CONTEST / EVENTS - REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

my main question pertains to Point #16...

Please provide a schedule of your primary in room contact during the event. YOU MUST have someone manning your contest table the entire time the contest area is open (9am - 12am).
can you specify more detail here? i mean, one of my events (Beer Cooling) isn't usually even in the contest area (hopefully we'll be by the poolside this year) and the other (Gringo Warrior) only runs from noon until about 5 or 6 PM on Saturday.

in those cases, am i still obligated to find people to sit at a table from 9 AM to midnight every single day? or did you mean just from 9 AM until noon? (i've never been a fan of AM and PM with respect to "12:00" since it gets interpreted so differently by lots of people and applications)
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I took it as, "Provide a schedule of who your primary in room contacts will be during the event". So in your case, it would be a schedule of who is working the Gringo Warrior area from 12pm-6pm.

I could be totally wrong though, that part confused me as well.

I assumed it meant "Give me a number of someone I can contact during the time I am on shift even if you or they aren't at the table" and just scheduled shifts in which my crew knows to answer the phone if Pyr0 calls because our table might be on fire or something. Otherwise, yea, it confused me too.

If we have stuff on the table, I can understand if the requirement is to have someone actually AT the table during that time but if the table is cleared I don't.

Yeah, I was wondering a little bit about that too. I usually pack up my gear so I don't have
to worry about someone watching my booth for the Geo Challenge. Plus my contest is primarily based online, and participants only need to visit the booth for a few things.
              I usually setup 10ish and breakdown 6ish.

Eh, either someone will and let the rest of us know or it's an easy question to hold off on until the orientation meeting on Wed. Yay apathy.

Many people have called me out for not including a cut off date for the RFI so here it is:
                    June 1st.

Contribute to the cause! come up with a new and creative contest or event and send your ideas in now!

Ok. Wow. So it looks like no one emailed Pyro and/or responded back here. I will email him now, specifically asking details about the table time, etc. If someone did, please pipe up.

I just sent an email to 2 people at *@defcon.org addresses to see if I get a bounce.

If you are trying to email Pyr0 at his defcon . org email address, please check to make sure that you typed a zero (0) not a letter ohhh (o) for the last character in the username before the @ symbol in the email address.

Email to one person did arrive with their @defcon.org address, and I have an auto-response.

So far, no bounce back to me when sending to Pyr0 at the defcon . org email address.
