• DEF CON 26 Shoot

Hey all!

I didn't see sub-forums created yet for the various events, so I'm starting this thread here since we have much to discuss. I'm going to drop a lot of notes in here that I took last summer out in the desert, and then we can tackle some important logistical questions for 2018.

If you enjoy the DEF CON Shoot, please feel free to chat with me here so it keeps running smoothly and successfully!
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Some of my main notes from last year:
* larger tent for admin/staff/amenities area
* an additional very large tent (or a few of the smaller ones, put together) for public hangout space
* coordinate with locals more this time (we met Danny and Phil from Indian Springs and they suggested we put up notices at Faye's Country Store and the Post Office next time, so locals know what's happening)
* fix the drone (that was awesome, while it lasted! we need to get some replacement props for it, i'm told)

I also have a note to make large stencils so I can more properly mark the huge Pelican cases with all the supplies. Need to find someone with a laser cutter who's willing to do that... any takers?

But, however, we now have the BIG question... and it's one that's been posed to me a lot in the past. And that question is: do we continue to run the Shoot across two days? With DEF CON pushing back more and more into Thursday... should the Shoot only be on Wednesday (and be longer on Wednesday?)

I'm not going to lie, that will likely be a royal pain for me, getting out to the site even earlier than I typically do on Wednesday, but I'm willing to consider this if it's helpful to others. I'm guessing for a one-day-only scenario we would try to have things at the Shoot go live at around 1400 on Wednesday (if both I and the crew setting things up could get out there around 11 AM Weds morning) then we'd have live fire more or less from 1400 until darkness falls on Wednesday. Then the crew would simply come get all the tables, chairs, and tents the next morning.

This would mean that anyone who doesn't get into town on Tuesday or rather early on Wednesday likely couldn't attend the Shoot. So, if that's you, speak up.

Again, I'm just considering this as an option based on feedback I've gotten about the changing nature of the way Black Hat and DEF CON schedules affect everybody more and more.

Thoughts?

I think I can speak for my group (dc414) in that we've only attended Wednesday shoots for the last few years, *because* of defcon registration, activities, and such going on. In fact we've had an informal rule that if you fly in our group, get the red-eye flight on Wednesday, else show up sooner so we can get our logistics together (we usually have a large car + room for a few that need a ride)

I have access to a 18"x24" 30w laser cutter -- it'll do up to 1/4" wood, else we could cut some matboard. I'm in WI so there's logistics of getting said stencils to you, but I'm willing if you are. PM me or drop into freenode #dc414 (i'm always there)

Forum DMs don't work for me (JSON error) so I'm just posting here...

regarding the stencils... i'm certain that matboard would work, since we're just talking about stencils i'll use to spray paint labels on the outside of the big pelican cases. perfection is not required.

does matboard come in simple 8.5" x 11" sizes? if so, that'd be fine. then they could all fit in an envelope. :-)

i was thinking of simply using that classic "Stencil" font (http://deviating.net/stuff/stencil.ttf) in letters about 2" tall for the following stencils...

OPS
CAMP
TARGETS
AMENITIES

...i'd honestly go larger, but the word "AMENITIES" is likely to dictate how big the font can be on an 11" wide surface. and i'd want all the other stencils to match the same font size.

Thoughts?

Your DM made it *shrug* -- in any case...

Matboard comes in large sizes (generally 32"x40") for backing pictures -- but can be cut to whatever is convenient. My first thought is to break up large ones into two -- spray the first half, line up the 2nd and spray again.

The wife informs me that stencil packs are like $5 at walmart -- tape them and spray em -- ex: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Alphabet-Stencils-100-Pack-Helvetica-Capital-Letters-4/40716631

If we're not talking custom logos or anything fancy that might be the quicker route, although I can cut up whatever works.

Regarding the BIG questions... I've wondered for years how much more the Defcon start would cut into our event. I've also enjoyed many of the talks we've started to hold over the years. (Forgotten Weapons, Weinie, Seeess, and others).

I'm not sure of the rental/location logistics but the schedule I'd like to float is:

Wednesday Morning:
- Staff Set-up - 08:00 - 09:00
- Shooter Arrival - 08:30
- Shooter Reg - 08:30 - 09:00
- Intro & Safety - 09:00 - 09:30
- Session S1 - 09:30 - 10:30
- Shoot Talk - 10:30 - 11:30
- Session S2 - 11:30 - 12:30

12:30 - 16:30 onsite lunch / talks / classes.
Ideas:
- hands on: Parts assembly
- hands on: Gun takedown/cleaning/maintenance
- hands on: 80% build
- reloading - this might be better suited as a talk vs hands on :P
- CPL/CWP/CWL education
- Traveling with firearms airlines/ground/reciprocity
- Purchasing firearms how the process works/varies
- Firearms in other countries

Wednesday Evening:
- Shooter Arrival - 16:30
- Shooter Reg - 16:30 - 17:00
- Intro & Safety - 17:00 - 17:30
- Session S3 - 17:30 - 18:30
- Shoot Talk - 18:30 - 19:30
- Session S4 - 19:30 - 20:30
- Clean-up - 20:30 - 21:00

Wednesday Night: Crash for the start of Defcon
Thursday Morning: DEFCON

(schedule shamelessly stolenfrom: http://deviating.net/firearms/defcon_shoot/)

Again I'm not sure of all the logistics but I do wonder how that section around midday could be used (assuming we can shelter ourselves from the sun). And for those of us that attend both days of the shoot, we'd cut our mileage and drive time in half.

Regarding the small question 'stencils'. I have access to a near infared laser cutter with a 11x19.5" cutting area. And a CNC if you'd like to make some metal stencils. The bed on the CNC is several feet by several feet (hopefully we don't need stencils this large).

I'm of like mind. I attend only on Wed, and do con things on Thurs.

On Wed only shooting: I'd like have the schedule support more shooting time than single days did previous years. And also the ability for early east-coast flights to land wed morning in time for the shoot (maybe not the start, but at least 1.5-2hr of shooting). Things like shoot talks could be scheduled first for people flying in and trying to make it out there.
The last few times I made both days, I think the attendance was much higher on wednesday so that supports this change.
Would camping be scrapped along with this change? Or would there be camping but nothing happening thurs morning?

We don't have a forum yet so on another topic: It looks like rooms will be checked regardless of if there is a do not disturb sign on the door. This could affect people who choose to keep things in their room:
https://lasvegassun.com/news/2018/feb/16/caesars-to-check-do-not-disturb-rooms-daily/
I'll try to call later and see if their policy has changed on checking in firearms

yeah, i think that with a Wednesday-only Shoot we'll not be seeing the "campout" option take place anytime soon. maybe one day in the future we'll all camp there Tuesday night and witness the tent setup early Wednesday AM or something. but, even then, who can say for sure. might just be one of those things that lives in DEF CON history and that's all.

I'm eager to hear what you find out from Caesar's, seeess.

I'm also going to report back on what our rental company says is feasible with regard to a very early setup or after-dark disassembly. they may well report that it's not possible, so we'll see what that means for pricing, etc.

Hello. DC26 will be my sixth Defcon and I'm looking forward to going to the shoot for the first time! I am most likely driving to LV again with arrival sometime Tuesday and if there is a need I could transport a few people to/from the location on Wednesday. Any idea where the location might be?

I'm pretty much with L0g1c on the ideal schedule. A Wednesday all-day event would make things easier for those of us that attend/work the shoot with only one hour plus long trip out to the desert, and allow for participation in Con proper on Thursday.

I'm up for one or two days of shooting - either one is about the same for me, other than making sure shirts are lined up on Tuesday. Also very interested in what people are doing for storage in the hotel. Every other year I've wheeled my Pelicans through the casino. Not feeling great about that this year.

Two updates:
1. I called Caesers to ask about their firearm policy, they said they allow guests to check in their guns at the security booth. I've done this at other hotels, and it can take 30 minutes so plan ahead.
It might be a good idea for others to call and verify this, the front desk's number is 702-731-7110

2. Looking around on the forest service's website it looks like lovell canyon is closed to shooting again (3rd year straight I think). The first year was due to a claimed fire risk, this year and last year was because they want to put together a new management plan that outlines where and how shooting can occur. Their site also mentions “The damage caused by irresponsible shooting activities to Lovell Canyon was much more extensive than we expected”

Last year when we called they expected to have the management plan done by the end of 2017, however that apparently didn't happen. There was also no way to get a permit that would exempt us from this shooting ban last year, and I expect the same is true this year, but we'll call them to confirm.

I called Caesar's and Bally's.
Both require guests to check in firearms with security. Caesar's has lockers in the security area and you get a key. They will escort you in to drop off and pick up your firearms. At Bally's security locks them up. Bally's said the office is staffed 24/7 so you can pick up your items anytime. I imagine it is same for Caesar's, but I did not think to ask them.
