This year we decided to replace our beloved Dunk Tank with something NEW!
Hackers and Guns in Las Vegas – Ya gotta love it.

You've seen it played out numerous times in movies and on TV. A flash bang grenade goes off. SWAT kicks in the door and moves quickly to differentiate between the good guys and the bad guys in the same room. How do they train to effectively recognize and take out the bad guys, while not wasting any of the hostages? One of the tools they use is a Firearms training Simulator or FATS system and someone was foolish enough to let us get our hands on one for DEFCON 16.

So… Calling all Shooters, FPS Gamers, Psycho Killers, and 1337 wannabes. Come on by and pop a cap in someone’s VR ass. We will be set up in room #103 near Registration and the Swag booth from 10:am – 8:pm. See if you got the skillz to make it through the challenges unscathed. Then the next time you hear a knock at your door in the middle of the night - you'll be ready.

The Skill Drills courseware comprises training drills that focus on the improvement of your student's speed, accuracy, and decision making skills. This courseware was developed by training professionals to focus on hand-eye coordination and has been tested by active Military and Law Enforcement instructors to ensure its training effectiveness. The courseware consists of drills that allow individual combatants to execute training exercises designed to improve target acquisition using laser-based training or Laser Shot’s exclusive Live-Fire System Trainer. Each drill allows an instructor to tailor every training session, using adjustable settings such as number of targets, target face time, target speed, and more, for individual skill levels from beginner to expert.

All proceeds go to support the Electronic Frontier Foundation – Leading the fight to protect your personal privacy and digital rights since 1990. More info at EFF.org

good times... look forward to it.
If a chicken and a half, can lay an egg and a half, in a day and a half... how long would it take a monkey, with a wooden leg, to kick the seeds out of a dill pickle?

Dammit. I loved the dunk tank (even though it wasn't near as convenient as at the AP). Some things are just *worth* the money.

        FATS is a rush.

I've done the FATS thing a few times, and yes, it is a good time. Also a good way to train and fun in this situation. Hopefully you have the one where some shady guy flashes a badge... I always shot at him. "He was askin for it"

I'll miss the dunk tank though.

One time I did a Mozambique on the guy who's trying to attack the ATM with a screwdriver and the draws a .45 when he is approached. The computer said it was a kill, but I had done it too fast to have perceived him as a threat.

The one thing that would improve FATS would be some IR sensors for the trainee's position. Several times it reported me as killed because as the bad guy pulled a gun, I dropped to my knee or otherwise made an evasive move, while drawing and firing.

Damn - I thought that only worked on TV where all the good guy guns had unlimited bullets and the bad guys, even the ones that were para-military, were always bad shots and the only ones that had to reload.

What, evasive moves? No, cops get taught some techniques for that, although it isn't the dive-and-fire-while-rolling stuff on TV. More like move-fire. Apparently even moving somewhat can through an untrained adversary off in a close combat situation.

See, the problem is your perception of "close combat". That's, what, fifteen miles for Navy guys? And ducking probably doesn't help with 16" shells.

So all that facing killing folks with the gun barrel jumping all around while rolling on the ground that Mel Gibson does is fake: Say it ain't so

16 Miles - yeah that sounds about right. Outside that range we send Tomahawks or planes. Then again, 15 miles is still within the blast radius of some of those toys we were said to have but never confirmed. A 16-inch round was said to be the equivalent in weight and cost of tossing a new VW over the side.

F! I'll pay extra if we can mod the "perps"! ;-) Imagine aggressively telling Angelina Jolie "Hands behind your back you sexy bitch!!"

Then again after enough sake, I doubt I would know the difference between Priest or Angelina, not that Priest isn't sexy mind you! haha.
