Defcon Goon: Speaker Operations: Call for Volunteers.

The few, the proud (arrogant?) ,the insane? Yes, that's right Speaker Operations a subset of the Defcon Goon Squad is looking for a few good folks. Speaker Operations goons are the blue shirts that ferry speakers to and from stage, keep the speaking schedule in order, and generally try to make the talks not suck...
Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we fail, generally there is beer at the end.
In an effort to ensure a healthy supply of goons for future Defcons, I'm hold semi-formal auditions/interviews this year at Defcon 16.

So if you interested in joining the ranks of the Defcon Speaker Operations Goons squad, here's what you've got to do:
    • Write me an email, telling my why you will rock speaker operations. (In a good way).
    • Demonstrate your resourcefulness by tracking me down and arranging a time for us to talk at Defcon this year. Make in memorable...it's a busy con you know.
    • Demonstrate to the speaker operations staff those blue shirted goons again, you know why they are so awesome (?!Schwag, beer?!)

    Thank you for your interest.

    Demonstrate your resourcefulness by ...
... requiring the applicant to find your email address.

That is a clever test of the applicant's resourcefulness. :-)

    Google is their friend.

If you get the job, are you required to protect the speaker in case a firefight breaks out during the event?
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

Would that qualify one for hazard pay (ie extra beer)? Ie, Gadi is one that always has great fear of russian retaliation. So say I volunteer to cover Gadi and he finally says something that incites those russians in the audience to action. Will his safe return guarantee me an extra ration of beer?

I'll give you an extra ration of beer if you *find* the Russians, and give him *to* them.

Just until the redshirts descend in... then find cover.

It is my understanding (and please correct me if I have been misinformed), but the "Russians" that were causing problems last year were about as Russian as Al Sharpton... it was a few folks just wanting an excuse to cause a problem.

You talking about the ones who were being asshats during his Estonia talk? Those guys were just being rude.

I'm more referring to random comments he's made in the past about fear of retaliation. I don't think there was a specific threat and was referring to it as an example.

I had a blast, these guys bust their ass to get the speakers in ontime, at the right place, including but not limited to getting their laptops to work on projectors, sound systems, recordings, beer requests, calming nerves and more. All within a period of 15 minutes (if we are lucky) between speakers.

                Kudos!
