    Hmm.. no replies?

I know it is not perfect.. I'll keep adding to it and post up version 1.0 here and ask for more comments.

I'll be checking out the Rive again next week, and I think Grifter found a spot for us to do all night activities in that won't piss off the other guests.

Also, I'd like to ask for opinions on how to use the space at the hotel. Specifically how to use all of the sky boxes. I was thinking of having different hacking groups reserve them on the condition that they are responsible for the space, and that they have to let the public in and hang out. That way there can be demos from the various groups showing off their work, and get more people involved. Just a thought.

    Merry almost new-year.

Will the DJ's be allowed to ply thier craft in said area?

Not having seen the sky boxes and going from descriptions, I think that handing out access based on poropsals for use, much like you mentioned. Got a project or idea for using the space, submit it and either through goon selection or on the forum here, select who gets what space. Maybe Kaminsky can have a good elevated position to do whatever it was he wanted to do with lasers last year.

Breakout Session space for individuals/groups that want to offer private, invite-only, or open to capacity/first-come-first-served, presentations or "classes." (Are they big enough for this?)

This would need organization and some sort of reservation system, and then need a way to let people know of changes to rooms/times.

Hands on, extended sessions (I know the lockpick people would love to have a room for all thier boards, etc.)

I'd say let each group (any) submit a propsal for what they want to do with the room, then assign them a few months before con so that they have time to prepare. It would also be good to know which boxes will overlook which convention space since noise will be an issue for some groups.

I like the idea of the breakout sessions- any idea if we can solder in there :) ?

Hands on presentations would be excellent-

Such as hardware, TCP/IP devices, etc...

Tick-tick-tick... any word on the CFP? Another member asked about this the other day.

The Riviera has reservations online (limited to 3-4 months from "now") or over the phone (800) 634-6753. Room Rates are "flat-fee" based on quantity of occupants. $92+T(~$100.28) with 1 or 2 people, $112+T(~$122.08) with 3 or 4 people. Priority for room assignment when you say you're with DefCon is "Deluxe" when making reservations on the phone.
Probably my fault on this. When I spoke to them on the phone, they siad DefCon people will be given priority to Deluxe rooms, BUT I did not initially post that that is only done at checkin, or when they pre-assign rooms, if they pre-assign rooms for some reason. This means people arriving early in the week with "DefCon reservations" will probably get Deluxe rooms first, and people arriving on Friday eve. may not get Deluxe Rooms if the hotel runs out of these rooms.

Thanks to Deviant Ollam's correction here that made this point clear.

Any word on soldering in breakout sessions? Or are we heading for breadboard only?

Who would we check with? Or do we simply have to go "private"?

Maybe I'll just pick up a few of those cold heat soldering irons you see on tv for $19.95 each. No burns. No mess

Actually, they're pretty amazing. The problem I have is that the tip is ENORMUS for PCB work, although I heard last week that a small tip can be ordered off the website.

                          Yes, tip is quite large...

Can be brittle...also can destroy certain parts (it uses the tip as a bridge for current flow....)-

I guess they figure the part would have to be large enough to be used with this iron, and parts that large are pretty robust :)

Don't know about the small tip, but a friend of mine makes his own guitar amps and musical equipment. He picked up one of these cold heat guns, and says they work great for macro work, and quick fixes. Not sure about long-term and very precise, but just wanted to pass that along.

I like mine, with the exception of the tip size. Apparently they also now have a new "Pro" model: http://www.coldheat.com/products.cfm
