Re: Do nicks or handles matter?
Oh, no. You should have seen what I deleted before I'd *had* the coffee. Fortunately, we all know my aversion to foul language. I admit that it is an incremental aversion, very thin when inadequately caffeinated. The veneer of civilization is now complete (until tomorrow morning, of course, or perhaps sometime late tonight).
Mmmm... Coffee. Moka Java. Guatemala. Kona.

Haha, that's wicked. I guess you're more oldschool than me... The shortcomings of youth... :(Leave a comment:

Conversely you could just tell everyone that your handle is The 3L 33 Tone and if they don't know about the 3L 33 Tone they aren't as old school as you are.Leave a comment:

Re: Do nicks or handles matter?
I don't know that any of us care. Not one way, not the other. The one is merely foolish, and the other is moronic. Your choice. The immaturity you've displayed in this thread is stunning. If I were you, I'd go off and think about whether I wanted to be taken seriously or not. Improving your grammar would be a start. You might also consider whether what you're going to say has any greater weight than the standard silliness that usually prevails when a group of adolescents first encounter alcohol.
The earlier reply that I made in this thread had nothing to do with you, but now you've made me notice you. This is never good. Really, goofy names (in your case) serve no purpose. Why not just use a person name, and get over it? There's no reason to do otherwise. It isn't as though you'd done anything interesting, where you'd be identified as one of the authors of this useful software, or that useful volunteer group.
No one cares *what* handle you use. It's rather like wearing goofy clothes, magenta hair, and not bathing. Sure, you're making a statement, but precisely *what* statement? It's the same thing here. If you expect to be treated like an adult, act like one. If you expect to be listened to, say something worth hearing (and say it in a manner that communicates what you say, no more, no less).
You might consider studying Cotman's posts. He's articulate, thoughtful, and to the point. I'd recommend against studying mine. I can be a trifle abrasive. No, really.Leave a comment:

okay since everyone does not or agree with my nick I have had for a while and because I respect the community. How about I go back to my original first nick disablmalfunc?Leave a comment:

Re: Do nicks or handles matter?
I have had this handle for 2 years on bhf and astalavista. But i did not receive so much dislike towards my nick. I was always told especially when I was new to astalavista and bhf IRC to just sit and idle then slowly make my little nest in the community, which I did. I thank you for not banning me right away. So I am on thin ice because of my nick? Yeah Id say thats unfair but thats life. I can not control what others think of me just because a handle.Leave a comment:

Re: Do nicks or handles matter?
In the spirit of full disclosure, it should be pointed out that before you had made your second post on the forums I had a couple of forum regulars ask me to permaban you based solely on your handle. Luckily for you I am far too open minded for the likes of that.Do people really judge each other off just their nicks. What ever happened to the saying "Dont judge a book by its cover"? That should apply for handles as well. I've had to always defend my
nick against ignorant people and yet my nick doesn't imply anything after it, if you know what im talking about. After people get to know me they dont even care about the nick. I ve had this handle for quite sometime now as well. So I guess the questions here are Do nicks really matter? :-) doesn't mean im changing mine either been through to much to change it now ^_^
I will tell you this...you were (and honestly still are) on much thinner ice here than if you had chosen to be called Bill. Fair, nope. Neither is life. It's the way it is when you choose to have a ridiculously self serving handle filled with leet speak you choose to bring a level of disdain on yourself. That's the way it is and the way it goes.Leave a comment:

Re: Do nicks or handles matter?
To be honest, when I see a handle like yours my first thought would be idiot or kid.
I might also wonder if it was a joke. If you went on to say something intellegent or interesting I might care enough to ask.Leave a comment:

Re: Do nicks or handles matter?
I get nothing out of a handle but a first impression. After that, as long as the person comes across as intelligent, then I pay them attention/respect regardless of how dumb their name might be.
As for mine, I like it, but it doesn't really mean anything- it simply arose out of my liking of a certain show about a wandering ex-assassin, as well as reading through a GamePro magazine. Amazingly it's never taken on any sites or services I sign up for.Leave a comment:

These are the posts I like to see. I am really surprised that the thread kept going. I thought you guys would just look at it then bash me. But I really respect what each and everyone has said about the topic.Leave a comment:

Re: Do nicks or handles matter?
I used to think that (about my handle), but the world turns out to have a pretty small namespace. There's about a bazillion shrdlus out there, any more. Of course, most of them don't have my sweet and winsome personality. I've been using it longer than anyone (as far as I know), but even that doesn't mean much.
Leet speak handles take away from credibility. I love some of the more unusual ones, though. I must have stared at erehwon for 5 minutes, first time I saw it, before it hit me what it was. Dogten cracks me up (for some reason, that one was obvious to me).
Cotman, you need to add a fourth reason to your list.
4. Some folk have a genuine need for anonymity, either to seperate themselves from the workplace, or to be taken at face value by a group that might otherwise have expectations because of your name.Leave a comment:

Re: Do nicks or handles matter?
There are those of us that have had a certain Nick since before the inturweb tubes were as wide spread as they are now, and BBS's ruled the day. Hmm, actually, my Nick goes back before that.Leave a comment:
