  • Internet in China - Any experiences?

So I'm going to Shanghai next week (fingers crossed on my tourist visa app, $130 ouch). Anyone have any first-hand experiences with the Internet and being able to connect to popular news sites? I've heard that hotels catering to foreigners aren't restricted, but I'd like to hear the real deal.

    In Bangkok Thailand now :)

    Consider using Tor/Privoxy.

That is, if they're not blocked by The Great Firewall.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

Last time I was in Shanghai was 2005 and I was able to get to the BBC, CNN, etc. from my laptop in my hotel. I didn't try getting to this site or other hacking sites.

We had a great time in Shanghai - enjoy!

Yeah, I'd be careful about browsing anything political/dangerous. They capture everything, and filter a lot of stuff.

          I don't trust anything there...

            I must agree.
If you can, use tor. It may be slow as hell, but it’s better then the alternative.
If you can’t stay away from anything that the Chinese government would consider dangerous.

Doubt it, there's over 250 Tor servers in China, how many of those are really properly configured Tor nodes, and how many of them are surveillance nodes is anyones guess.

Apparently and according to CNN Internet Addiction is a real problem over in Korea and China. There are actually clinics and 12 Step Programs. I find the notion silly myself, though I must admit staying up for days and not eating playing video games. The internet is an agoraphobics paradise.

So the question is if Internet Addition is a big problem over in China and they have a lot of censorship, what are they looking at that is so additive, and why aren't they sharing? :-) Don't Bogart that content my friend :-)
