  • traveling with a minor

hmm i was just wondering if anyone knew anything about laws concerning traveling with an unrelated minor. such as who takes responsibility of the minor. we are planning to bring a minor this year which will be the only minor with us. any help with this would be great. also laws concerning being in vegas with an unrelated minor etc.
    thank

My understanding is that the laws vary from state to state, but in general the person or persons accompanying the minor would be responsible regardless of relation to the minor.

Also consider that if said minor's parents don't like the idea of him or her going to Defcon, they may call the cops to retrieve that person from you. If you've brought them into Nevada from another state, this may result in charges of Transporting a Minor Across State Lines being levelled at you, which I believe is a Federal felony.

Not saying this *will* happen, but it is something to consider.

      hmm

hmm ok yea the parents have agreed so that isnt a concern. i was wondering if you have the parents sign a release form stating that you will not be responsible for the minors actions or the minors well being would this work so that we arent responsible for him? or would this not work since the minors has to be accompanied by an adult?
      thanks

I believe for your protection you need to get a relese so you can get them metical attention(same thing they give to a non family babysitter or person he stays with if parents go out of town) as well as proof of right to transport them across state lines from the parents. As for the who's resposisable for him/her under 18 probably whomever he is with.(I.e. who was the main adult in the party he/she was traveling with.)
I take at least one minor with me every year the metical relese is a Very Very good idea.(makes it easier to take them to the emergency room)
As is the permission to transport them across state lines.(covers your ass)

          ok

hmm ok yea. i was also wondering say if the minor gets in trouble for something say gets caught stealing for example or gets caught causing trouble after curfew. who is responsible for this? are we in some way going to get in trouble as well even if we arent involved but are technically responsible? would it be safer to have him fly to dc and just meet up at the alexis?
          thanks

I'm not sure about nevada laws but here the primary resopnsibility is with who they are traveling for smaller matters, they are relesed into your custody and given a fine, but then if it is a large matter (i.e. theft, vandalism, rape, murder...) it falls to the parents or primary gardian. a waver releasing you from responsibility might be a good idea but it can stop you from getting them out of small matters.....

sorry bud just checked with the LVMPD(Las Vegas Metro Police Department) and you bring um your in the bag if they do something wrong..even if they fly in and are just staying with you your stuck holding the bag.

"you will be responsible for that child on "ANYTHING" you as the adult has accepted responsibility to bring that child here" as quoted from the E~mail I recieved back from the LVMPD

My advice threaten the kid prior to getting to Vegas..... if you do anything stupid don't get caught......get caught and i kill you.....

Minors aren't real good about that whole "not getting caught" thing. I think the death threat should be on doing anything stupid. For the record, I never take a minor ANYWHERE... even out of the city... without a release signed AND NOTARIZED by the CUSTODIAL parent.

                        minors

And make sure the notarized permission slip is valid in Vegas, all states have different laws.

remember that no amount of permission slips and waivers will protect you from lawsuits if you are found to be negligent.
