  • i can't wait to mess with this new lock tech

i saw this link that someone had shot me over IM last night. (it was either Mr. E or renderman... i'm pretty sure it was render)

Schlage Z-Wave Door Locks Can Be Controlled Remotely Using Internet Magic
Schlage is planning on taking door lock security into the internet age with a new lineup of Z-Wave devices that can be locked, unlocked and monitored from a cellphone or other web enabled device. By connecting a Z-Wave gateway to any broadband router, users will be able to take complete control of up to 256 locks—including creating and disabling passcodes as well as monitoring who accessed the door and when. ... At this point, no pricing or release date information has been made available
now, Schlage is a company who has tended to be pretty good in the "sensible innovation" department, and while some of their initial ideas have been hit or miss (like the Everest) that doesn't change the fact that the company's new developments have tended to be close the mark in the most important ways and led to better security overall. After all, it was the Everest "side pin" design that they incorporated into the Primus, which is now one of the locks I really tend to like a whole lot.

If i had to bet, i'd say that there's a good chance that someone somewhere didn't think through 100% of the code on this new sucker, probably with respect to how to secure the internet communications. Still, i'd love to play with one. I'll try my charm-fu out on the company and see what I can see.

"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Woohoo! I love the idea of this device! But I REALLY love the idea of finding a vulnerability or three in it.

A quick google says it's not Wifi, but some competition to the x10 home automation stuff

I too look forward to breaking these. Getting one is the first trick. I'm broke right now, so it won't be me getting one.

Z-Wave has their own forums at http://zwaveworld.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=241 . In looking through there (very quickly), it appears that here is some programming info available, including some open source stuff.

Re: i can't wait to mess with this new lock tech

This sounds brilliantly cutting edge and/or fragile. I worked QA for a home-automation firm a couple years back, and they were just starting to look at introducing integration with home security systems before I was laid off. The number of holes that integrating anything into a LAN introduces made me a bit queasy and prompted a great many detailed write-ups that were of course filed and ignored. They were using CAN and TCP/IP for their backbone and just starting to look at introducing Zigby.

I'll have to do some reading on this tonight if work stays slow. I'm intrigued.

I do like the idea of these, but just don't trust the programming enough.

The only way I could see myself using one if for deliveries.
Having one of the remote controlled locks on the outside door of my porch but a regular lock on the inside door, meaning I could unlock the door remotely for deliveries but if someone breaks into the Networked lock all they can steal is my muddy boots and any deliveries from that day.

More worrying is the numerous low priced copies which will come out in future.

Okay, this looks to be fun. Let me see if I can talk Prof B. into buying one for us to play with. I'm pretty sure he'll go for it.

Addendum: I just emailed Blaze about the lock and his reply "Jeez, are these people nuts? Gotta get one of these. "
So, it looks like we'll have one at HOPE to play with.
