DHS Invites Public Comment on Infrastructure Protectioninteresting. for as much bitching as we all do, i wonder if anyone will shoot them any ideas.

heh, i know i'm tempted to but likely won't since the way our brains are wired results in "policies that simply make too much sense for the government to ever take them seriously," as Dave Barry might say.

Let's see, fire the current head of DHS(Michael I'm so overwhelmed by this job), and place instead our friend and Defcon attendee the current head of the GOA would be a great start. Give the GOA some teeth other than oh by the way the train is about to go off the track.

Form a Defcon supreme council and place it in charge of all things needing to be secured and accounted for.

Just a thought.

You could always suggest that they stop the security theater, but I don't think they'd understand. I think they really believe their theater works.

It really depends on your viewpoint. Does it work in the sense that it is a visible sign that they are "doing something"? Yes. Does it work in the sense that those with weaker wills may be dissuaded from committing evil? Yes. Does it allow them to grow the size of their department and thus make them a more significant part of the government? Yes.

We get frustrated because it's not the best course of action, and it seems to distract those in charge from real work. Meanwhile, it incoveniences millions of Americans (many who perceive that inconvenience as a patriotic duty), contributes to a culture of fear (which may be an agenda of the current administration), and discourages people from making informed decisions about their personal safety.

But, as usual, I'm just preaching to the choir here.

I wonder if one has to be careful when crafting a suggestion. If the feedback is all negative (you have weaknesses here, here, and here) rather than positive (you should follow some other procedure to improve security), will people in suits show up at my door to question why I have been analyzing weaknesses? Asking for assistance may not be entirely what it seems on the surface...

On the other hand, contributors could easily remain anonymous uisng mail, email, or fax.
