Not a total surprise, the ISP's are cracking down on residential customers that host servers. Me being one of them, as I had to get a Business Class account or take them down and or else; whatever that meant. Perhaps banned forever from the internet. :-)

Is the point not that it seems excessively expensive for a very limited service? You can get free services that will do pretty much the same thing.
Having said that if they can cash in on people, then 'why not' I suppose.

Not a total surprise, the ISP's are cracking down on residential customers that host servers. Me being one of them, as I had to get a Business Class account or take them down and or else; whatever that meant. Perhaps banned forever from the internet. :-)

Therein lies the confusing thing. I'm currently a Comcast 10mbit residential customer (And I do in fact get the nominal speed*) - with basic TV (no digital, no HD, no premium channels) this costs $120/mo.

If I sign up as a business customer, they get off my back about excessive bandwidth usage (I use a LOT, but they've never complained), get off my back about server hosting (I host several, but they've never complained), give me a QoS agreement (albeit a shitty one), I get a couple static IPs, the same TV package, and 15mbit of bandwidth, plus VoIP, for $90/mo (Permanent rate, not some introductory thing)

The only thing keeping me from doing the switch right now is that the disconnect order would be processed immediately and the business install takes quite some time because they only have like 2 guys in the entire region who have been trained how to hook up the fancy gateway equipment (Which I can only surmise is a USB modem and shit router in rackmount format) instead of a lameass USB modem.


Why in the hell are they trying to force their highest end users onto a better, cheaper package?

in my experience, they did not disconnect me at all... the rolled everything over the moment the guy showed up.

In my area, Philadelphia I see 16mb/down by 3mb/up line speed rates.

They will catch up with you eventually and without warning you won't be able to send mail. Mail is the big one that they get you on.I have my SMC8014 business gateway setup as a bridge with 5 ip's. The guys that come out are really a mixed bag, some know stuff, others don't. However the tier 2 business class support is very good and can/ will handle all of your requests for things like ptr records(it's very hard sending mail these days without a ptr record) and other high end stuff.

You must call the business class number during normal business hours from like 7am - 7pm est. Don't call residential service or you get the drones.

I host everything but my own dns, which I let them do. If you do a dnsstuff.com report on my domain you will see it pretty much all within RFC recommendations(minus the extra security I have on my systems). They are even doing SPF records these days.

They let you mix residential TV service with Business Class Highspeed so you are not stuck paying the higher TV rates.

So far it's been very reliable. No outages what so ever. You won't lose service switching over. They come out so everything works up until the moment you switch. Make sure they come out on like a Monday and not a Friday otherwise you will have to wait for Business Class to make any changes that you want.
