So.... as with every post-DEFCON era, i have started receiving messages from people who are asking about the "filler content" and if/when it will be torrented.

I am pleased to say that yes, like in years past I will be creating a torrent for people to grab everything that they may have seen projected on a wall at many of the DEFCON public areas, parties, etc. I'm still cleaning up and sorting some files, due to the fact that this undertaking is a lot larger than in the past... but i'm hoping that by the end of the week it will all be available.

Why is this year so much more of an endeavor? Well... as some people may know, there are two primary "archives" of content that exist separately at DEFCON. There was the old DEFCON Movie Channel which inserted stuff in-between films. This content archive was managed by Tierra and i took that and started cleaning it up, reorganizing it, and so forth just after DC12 i want to say.

There is also, however, the content that is played in the CTF room by Bob from Kenshoto. While there is much overlap between his content and the DCTV filler, it is (or was) a separate archive. Bob's material tended to be much higher-quality (almost all of it was VOB or MP4/MOV) and came from a wider range of sources.

Last year at DEFCON i acquired Bob's whole archive, too. It's been over a year that i've been sorting these files in my spare time, eliminating duplicates between the two archives, and merging them.

Because i'm a total freak about such things, there are very exacting standards that I follow with all the clips... and some things don't make the cut, sadly. However, much of Bob's archive (indeed, pretty much all that you've seen in the CTF room) is now part of my master archive. Both Bob's clips and Tierra's clips needed a lot of work in the past, and i apologize for how long this has taken. There are some standards that i follow when working on the material...
    1. quality - All clips must be as high-quality as is reasonable within sane file size limits. So many times there has been a music video with totally ass sound quality. 128 kbps bitrate audio is fine for a clip from the Home Shopping Club where a guy pokes himself with a katana sword... but not for Trent Reznor blasting out a heavy tune. I've re-done the audio on about half of the music videos using downloaded or ripped sources. all clips have their audio somewhat normalized (exceedingly loud or soft clips would get addressed, that is. others are all just in the ballpark) and whenever possible video will fade in from and out to black. also, anytime multiple "versions" of a clip exist i would try to go with the most rare or special or, indeed, explicit. this is particularly the case with music videos... if an uncensored version of a video is out there, that's the one that makes it to the filler. (which now contains the director's cuts of the Beastie Boys' Sabatoge, NIN's Sin and Closer, some Bloodhound Gang videos, and other odds and ends)

    2. formats - All clips for my archive must be in open and non-proprietary format. Thus, yes... all of Bob's Apple videos and DVD VOB files are being re-encoded to XviD. This is done in concert with the above standard, that quality should not be sacrificed wherever possible... but i'm maintaining a list of which files i had to drop down so that when he gets the archive back, he can keep his super-high quality content for CTF projections.

    3. non-commercialism - Clips that feature a company logo or URL too prominently get edited through a variety of means. Often this can be as simple as cutting out some or all of the credits of a promotional film (many graphic design shops make little clips as a way to say "come attend our school" and such) but other times blogs or video hosting sites will slap a logo or URL somewhere in the film itself. Heh, i tend to address this either with some minor frame clipping or by laying a super on top of part of the clip. some of the terrific moments of FAIL that i have in the archive now got that treatment... making them even funnier, i must say. something that particularly draws my ire are music video rips that get tagged at the end with some douchebag teenager's horrible photoshopped graffiti tag. these have been ruthlessly excoriated, and you get to make fun of me if i missed any.

naturally, the directory called "commercials" is somewhat immune from the no advertising rule... but they tend to be specifically funny or rare commercials (often from non-western sources) that merit attention as art or humor, as opposed to as ads.

    4. watchability - since my archive has now grown to nearly 10 GB, it won't even fit on a DVD anymore. in an attempt to keep this from getting any more out of control, i've cut a few clips that just seemed totally worthless. i generally don't like to cut anything, but like... we've all seen the scene in Hackers where the kid red-boxes the payphone. A low-qual DVD rip that cuts in and out in a weird fashion didn't make the grade for me now.

Sooooo.... how do we go about getting this out to all you eager beavers? Well, i'd like to try to make some sort of pre-seeding setup, where people who have the right assets can get the torrent a few days before it goes totally public. What are the right assets? Well...
    * if you have a previous version of the archive (like as a swag DVD that i handed out at a previous DEFCON) and it's all still in the proper directory structure, and

    * if you have a relatively fast connection (upstream and down), and

    * if you can keep your seed machine online a whole, whole lot
... then i'd love to get a PM from you so we can get the full archive out to you as soon as i complete it.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. Deviant,

I've just upgraded and am working on the new media.defcon.org site that would be a good place to host con videos and related media goodness-treats. If you need a place to host stuff, let me know!

wow... i'll surely do that, but i don't want you to run afoul of any copyright hassles. while most of the clips are sufficiently rare and/or short enough to totally fall within the provisions of fair use (small segments of obscure films, foreign game shows, other such content) there are some parts (notably segments from modern, popular cartoons and music videos) that could result in C&D letters. don't know how actionable they'd really be, but i'm just saying.

i'll be happy to get you the whole archive when i complete it. i had hoped to have that done by tomorrow, but NIN is in town so likely that's going to take up a large chunk of my day. i'll fire off a PM to you with the torrent as soon as i get it running to the private parties like pre-seeders.

The Filler archive is totally complete, all prepped and sorted, and ready to go. I'm contacting the two people who said they'd pre-seed this weekend. On monday (or late sunday night, if things are moving along well) the torrent goes live.

Thank you to everyone who has waited so patiently for this to come off. I'll start a new thread with the address of the torrent file once we get really going. It can also serve as a discussion area for people commenting on clips they enjoy, things they didn't expect to see, or anything that may have been missed.

No, thank YOU for the incredible amount of work you do on this. Most of us know what a massive PITA video encoding is.

awe, thanks, man... it just makes me happy to do whatever i can for the community.

and, honestly, it's not the encoding (which sort of just runs itself once you set it and forget it) but rather my obnoxious attention to detail and general fussiness... since i re-configure the encode settings for each clip, trying to maximize quality when needed but squeeze file size whenever possible, i wind up being my own personal pain in the ass.

this time 'round there was a significantly sliding scale there... with clips that came from low-qual sources (like freaky Estonian commercials by a man named Harry Egipt) would be run at 400 x 300 with mono sound while high-end DVD rips (some music videos from the Kenshoto colleciton were VOB files) would blast at 640x480 or better with the MP3 audio set to 256 or full 320 Kbps.

I should note, that now all of the clips are XviD encoded (typically at quality level "3") and all audio streams are LAME MP3 with bitrate commensurate to the clip's source quality. So... grab yer codecs now if you can't play those files. (lord only knows exactly how someone would not be able to play open format files like that... but there you go)

there are actually two exceptions to this, i believe. there is a hillarious feed capture from DirecTV broadcast on their "pirate warning channel" which was capped in raw dvb format. It's playable through some freak of the DirectShow mechanism but the MPEG stream fails to render or behave properly in any editing software i've tried. so that's in there in its original form. i'll keep poking at it from time to time, though.

there are also a couple (two, i believe) Flash files that i failed to render/capture in realtime (which i often do, since most flash conversion tools suck ass) due to their high quality craftsmanship. particularly, one music video for a Radiohead song is the most amazing flash animation i've ever seen (and you're talking to someone who was a long-time fan of both JoeCartoon as well as Radiskull & Devil Doll, hah) and i want people to have the opportunity to see it in full, vector-scaled quality. there's also some sort of mega-man bohemian rhapsody parody in flash that i just left as is because i got tired of trying to sync the sound in converted format. (my kingdom for a decent .swf to .avi tool!)

but there you go... that's the tech spec rundown of what we're looking at.

the whole archive is now over 11 GB in size and consists of 615 files with a total runtime of over 30 hours. Heh, if we ever get our beloved DCTV channels back i think we could totally have one feed that is nothing but filler.

One of the things I love about DC is that everyone mostly has a *basic* knowledge of modern tech.
I think I'm smarter than a lot of people, but when I walk into a room at DC I drop the average IQ by 25 points.
At least I never have to explain what a "divx" or "xvid' file is (like at work).
Sorry for rambling, picked up a nasty virus.

heh... "but wait... i though that DivX was that outdated DVD player system that died off! how can DivX movies still play?" hehe. actually, i will concede that it was an entirely stupid name for a codec, even if the other technology had been dead for ages.

and XviD is a cute tongue-in-cheek inversion of the other name, but still not as informative as simply saying MPEG-4. Then again, you can run into the problem of the "first" DivX codec to appear not being true DivX (this is the one that had the winkey emoticon in the name) but which was actually hacked up ASF encoding, ugh.

And, of course, MPEG-4 is still a developing standard of which XviD is only one flavor. (and even then... it's only one variant of a specific part of MPEG-4, which is wholly removed from other familes of MPEG-4 encoding like H.264)

Heh... ok, now i'm starting to get confused by it all again.

when will you learn... it's never really an upskirt photo of Anna Kournikova in those emails. best just to delete them, no matter how tempted you are.

P.S. - if you don't seed until your ratio reaches at least 2:1 then Keyser Soze will cut you up as you sleep and burn down your house.

                      Thanks for the torrent!

If anyone happens to have the same problem I did, which is a complaint about 'invalid multibyte characters' or somesuch, try changing your locale from UTF-8 to ISO-8859. The filenames are (apparently) encoded with that.

(Then again, this problem might only show up if you're attempting to download in linux onto a mounted NTFS partition)
                      It's not stupid, it's advanced.

I'll be home later this afternoon to start downloading. I'll seed it from my file server as much as I can to help out. My upload is not top notch but every little bit will help I guess.

quick question: I remember at defcon 15, on kenshoto's wall, seeing a parody of Benny Benassi's 'Satisfaction''s music video, that was shot-for-shot identical, except with men instead of women. I couldn't find it in the torrent, though. Is this just DC16 stuff, or is DC15 in there as well?

Hmmm... i was working with Bob's archive that he had given me some time in between DC14 and DC15. That is what was merged into the latest DCTV archive.

That would explain that clip's absence. I'll speak to him and see about getting an update again.

Even now, of course, this does not reflect a full mirroring and merger of all the Kenshoto content... there's fucking tons of it. I went with the most rare and unique 70% to 80%. I left out a lot of one-liners from movies and other things that aren't so "rare" compared with a lot of the rest of the filler. (I did leave a few real gems, however, like the "crypto smasher" tool from Weird Science.)
