while i am not going to publicly utter support for breaking into any system, the attack surely illustrates the problem with use of such email services for official business.

as stated in the article, this problem was reported in the past and no one seems to have done anything to fix the bad behavior...

then again, maybe the behavior (as intimated by the above quote) was not simply careless but a specifically criminal (or at the very least, underhanded) attempt to undermine government transparency and accountability.

still... yahoo? why not just be a total douche and go with AOL or Hotmail. you'd think that at least she would have opted for a hushmail account or some SSH. what a bozo.

Where are her people? The fact aside that the account should have never been created; the second she got the nod this account should have been closed. I can understand Barbie not understanding, but who's looking out for her.

Regardless of your political belief's you should be angry that someone would invade someone's privacy (this was her private account, not her actual governor account) and posted the information publicly.

I just think by virtue of her position someone(IT, Lawyers, Security, someone) should have informed her of the risk of one of these accounts. I have a boss who uses an AOL account despite the fact he has a company account to conduct his business; go figure. You can't control something outside your influence. Hosting mail is a relatively simple thing to do. Monitoring the mail is also something simple to do. These companies gmail ...etc offer NO assurance of privacy. They don't notify you of suspicious activity.

Heck my school e-mail account was brute forced with an extremely strong password by some spammer and I never got notified until I started getting returned messages I never sent. Even then I had to call the school and tell them, aaaaa please change my password I've been compromised. On my server I watch what goes on each and every night. If I see anomalous behavior I can take steps to adjust for it.

There have been so many high profile cases of people either getting cracked, or comprising information being forensically harvested from numerous electronic sources that she should know better.

Anyway I believe that the group calling themselves Anonymous had nothing to do with it and are being framed by an unknown group of Scientology hackers. I know, total crap right; but I figure I'd stir the pot a little anyway.

It doesn't really matter where her email was hosted at, her privacy was violated, a crime was committed and crimes do not deserve to be celebrated regardless of who they're committed against.

I'd feel the same way if it was Saddam Hussein's or Barrack Hussein's account, it was still a crime and the criminals shouldn't be lionized because of their target.

It was her PERSONAL account, she may have sent email to close advisers from it, regardless, it was her personal account. Do you expect her, and her people to know everything that we know about email? Why would you expect them to know the dangers of using such an account, chances are, she's used it for years and never had a problem, so she inherently trusted it.

To blame her or her people for using a trusted email source is just plain silly. To say that this is at all her fault is silly.

Again, aren't you angry, that criminals under the 'hacker' name are dragging down the entire hacker community? That's what should be making you mad, especially after all the talks at Shmoocon about changing the public's view of hackers.

In your analogy the police are still required to investigate the crime that's been committed. I hope that scum that committed this crime get caught and end up in the Federal-pound-you-in-the-ass-prison.

I'm sure she has an account with the state government up there, but from what I'm seeing in this statement, she isn't supposed to have a personal email account?

I'm sure you have a work account, do you have a personal account as well? Why should she be held to a different standard just because she's a public official. I'm sure there are hundreds of public officials that have personal email accounts across dozens of different servers that we'd look down on.

Again, where's the outrage that a crime has committed against a public official, regardless of politics, and email hosting service, a crime has been committed. That shouldn't be celebrated and a 'blame the victim' mentality shouldn't be the primary response.

If your mom's account was hacked and all her personal information ended up being posted for any pervert to use, would you blame your mom as well? What if your little sister's cell phone number was posted, because of a hack, would you blame your little sister?
