  • Picture Sharing ?

I'm trying to decide on what to do about the state of affairs around a picture archive for DEFCON. https://pics.defcon.org/ is a picture management system with voting, comments, albums, etc. but it is a bit over engineered and I have yet to get bulk picture uploads to work flawlessly.

I have been thinking about ditching it and going to a less complicated system, or even using some outsourced solution like flikr. The reason I haven't is that I want to keep an archive of past pictures, and not have to worry that in 5 years flikr might be gone and something new is in its place. I have a lot of physical pictures from DEFCON 1 through 5, then hugh gaps as people went digital, then their web sites went away and there were no mirrors.

Chime in, what do you want to see? What would you use and contribute to? The goal is to share and comment on pictures from DEFCON and other things you find interesting.

    Hey DT,

You might want to look into this, I have been using it for awhile and it seems to be secure (but it still kind of in a beta). Also, bulk uploads seem to be working flawlessly on it.

What did you have in mind that isn't the present site but not flickr? I think I might be for that option because right now I don't know if I trust flickr to be up how it is in the future too, but I agree that the pics site is a bit ... fancy for my tastes.

Considering a lot of people post their photos up on their own pages - and I think I've found more at those sites than posted at the pics site here - it doesn't seem to be a centralized thing anyway...?

Can you put a poll of options up in this thread?

I actually never look at the pics pages. I uploaded some pictures when it first came up, but since I can't adjust what I see when I look at it, I just don't go there at all any more. I know it's hard to lose all the history that disappears when sites go away, but perhaps a better solution would be to request mirrors, and then just replace disappearing sites as they happen.

Perhaps someone on the staff at Defcon could make selections (with permission) of various photographs, and then just build a group of photos for each year. I mean really, how many shots do we need of random drunks barfing, or people sitting at their laptops on the floor?

Actually the latter sounds really good - why not a "50 best photos from Con" post-con contest? And those photos get added to some master archive, sort of like the traveling terabyte project, or just to a website that has a ton of mirrors?

I'd prefer no contest. What happens there is that people vote for their friends, rather than for things that are of general appeal. I would think that a good eye could look at various sites, note when something seems to be of long term interest, and then ask permission.

We all want to see pictures (or the video) of reporter whatsername running from the room after being spotted, but there were a lot of bad shots, and a couple of good ones. Keep the one or two that were funny, add a brief caption as to what happened, and move on to the next one. Curious people can always go out and search for more. Perhaps make a link to the youtube videos, but no need to have a local link. Why waste bandwidth when you can just point to youtube, right?

Frankly, I've been using Gallery2 for some time now. Its got the intuitive interface the pics.defcon.org software is really lacking.

what's the gallery code on 23b.org? that site has always impressed me. the only thing it can never do well is adjust things horizontally... unless you have a super huge screen you have to endlessly scroll left and right. other than that, the gallery seems really badass.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Thats Gallery2. In regards to the huge pictures, gallery will create a thumbnail and if told to do so an 'in between' pic. The source pics on 23b tend to be huge because most of them have gigantic badass SLR digital nooklear powered space cameras.

I have one of those nook-you-lar gigantic DSLR space cameras, this year I suppose I should bring it and take some pics and upload them, what's the max file upload size? like 4 gigs or something?
