  • Data Center Fit For a James Bond Villain...

This was brought up by another staff member of the H2H security group... It's truly a masterpiece of architectural engineering.

The World's Most Super-Designed Data Center

I must say, I envy the employees that work in such an environment.

Re: Data Center Fit For a James Bond Villain...

Trust me, if there was ever a data center that looked the part of a Bond Villain lair, it would have to be the former Westlin Bunker, now better known as Montgomery Westland Data Center in Montgomery, Texas.

    From their history page...

The Bunker has one of the most interesting histories of any data center you know. Originally constructed in 1982 by Louis Kung (Nephew of Madam Chang Kai Shek), the campus was his residence and headquarters for his oil company. Originally shrouded in secrecy and armed guards most local residents were unaware that he built a 40,000 square foot nuclear fallout shelter next to the office building. The shelter was built to house his family, employees, and their families in the event of a nuclear war (which he was thoroughly convinced would happen).

The office building was built with some of the same construction techniques as the bunker. Once you visit the campus this is very evident starting at the bullet proof glass on the first floor and reception area. This 5 layer laminated glass encompasses almost the entire first floor.

Some selected photos of the original bunker are below. The only remnant of the old bunker is the jail cells, which are now used for tape and dry storage.

If you're really curious, there are some pictures of the place floating around the Internet but the pictures don't do any real justice, you have to see this one in person to soak up the paranoia Mr. Kung had at the time when building this fortress.

Probably not too surprising, I have a whole list of data centers that would easily qualify as Bond Villain lairs, and not to let the cat completely out of the bag, there is a certain Defcon attendee that may or may not own a long haired white cat or have a pool of sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!

I'd have to say that this Bunker is better..considering who operates it..

You're forgetting about this particular bunker.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

I was trying to keep the mystery going on that certain regular Defcon attendee, and for the record, since I haven't visited The Bunker, I can't say for certain if he does have a pool of RFID tagged sharks with bluetooth activated frickin' laser beams attached to their heads guarding the joint!

Maybe not the sharks, but I have it on good authority that he has a white cat.

Re: Data Center Fit For a James Bond Villain...

Next on my short list of Bond Villain Data Center lairs is Titan, I can't really tell if its a currently operational data center, the site was formally a NORAD command & control center, built to withstand a nuclear blast, and is fully TEMPEST shielded.

There are a couple photos on the website, but since it was built by the U.S. Government, its not the most picturesque building, it has that visual of GO AWAY, forget you saw this place, architecture.

It sits at the former Larson Air Force Base. This part amps up the Bond Villain lair to an order of magnitude because its within walking distance (or one of those yellow motorized carts all villains lairs seem to have) from one of the longest runways in the U.S., its also an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle, and space port development site.
