    i call super shenanigans on this. i have long believed that the NSA has had the ability to eavesdrop on Skype conversations... either by cracking the protocols and crypto or simply be pushing for a backdoor in the system.

    local law enforcement may not have themselves the ability to do this, but i'd be fucking stunned if the spooky types have no ear on the wire in this situation.

    and i would suspect that eBay would approach the NSA with offers of selling a backdoor to them if there wasn't one there already. one company that basically defined the "screw the public at every turn as a business model" is eBay.

      At the last meeting we did here in San Antonio, I actually did a short discussion on CALEA laws and showed some firmware revision notes and developer whitesheets for firewall vendors and linksys voip routers that said they were CALEA compliant.

      As far as I know CALEA laws only apply to physical hardware. So that would be why Skype escaped being required to have a backdoor. The law was written so loosely though, there might be someway they could use it. I haven't had a chance to actually look at all the stipulations they included. Vendors have said though that it was so vague, that some only included a caller id log, while others actually included the ability to reroute voip calls for monitoring.

        That was my understanding as well when working with several vendors some years back regarding their devices and CALEA compliance. I may take a look at it again for grins and giggles.
