    Greetings....

    Hi there,
    I have no idea what is in store for us this year,
    but i couldn't stand leaving a forums thread blank,
    so here is a filler,
    if I or anyone else has more information,
    please speak up!

    here would be one of my suggestions...

    either have a bank of sound board feeds that people can patch into if they wish or allow/encourage the performers to record their sets so that we don't have to wait 89 years for the official recordings to be released.

        In the past it was extra-special and cool that they appeared at only private parties, but these past few cons when they've been playing in open rooms it's been so poorly-announced (or not announced at all) and minimally-attended that they hardly sell any of their CDs and such.

        It sure seems like they have a good enough time anyway, but it would really be great if they had a slot at an event where loads of people could come around and enjoy them. They are the kind of band that i am always stunned to learn some people haven't heard of in the scene.

          Having GM1 and Inkarnit play? That's a definite way to make sure people don't come back to DefCon. I'm pretty sure the only thing worse would be if Roamer and GM1 decided to Jam together.

            I would enjoy a metal act but would also enjoy anything that can compel the room to motion.

            It's my perception that events we've thrown in the PDX area that electronic/dj acts were much less complicated to host than live bands, unless we booked a club that had an appropriate PA for amplification of a full band. Smaller punk rooms, we'd go with only the vox being amplified, very raw but works for small rooms.

            Although you can turn down electronic elements in a live setup, acoustic drums are loud and theres no taming cymbals. Electronic driven parties seem to go to dawn with minor volume adjustments, but the live bands always end up being shut-down at some point.

            The easiest overall was supporting electronic/dj acts... minor monitors, scalable full range speakers, add some subs, lots of lights... and the biggest benefit, a master volume control.

            Now if cost isnt a factor, I'd say many more subs and more fire. Much more fire.
            If a chicken and a half, can lay an egg and a half, in a day and a half... how long would it take a monkey, with a wooden leg, to kick the seeds out of a dill pickle?

              A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

                  DC Recordings

                  I would fully agree with this,
                  especially since DT asked me for the recordings yesterday,
                  and my message back to him was:
                  "As far as i know, there were no recordings from last year."


                  Zziks, please correct me if I am wrong - and DT is looking for them.

                    I too would like live bands. I would also love not having unions with minimum $$$ commitments! :-)

                    If we are to do live bands we need a lot of them to make all the union requirements feasible. For example if there was one live act a night I would still end up paying for a lighting guy, sound guy, mixing board guy, set up / tear down, etc. All those activities and gear add up. It would be better to have 4 or 5 (Or however many makes sense) live bands one day, and have DJs the next to save on an additional day or rental and (more expensively) labor. DJs require a lot less infrastructure and no union dues.

                    I am totally bummed if all the music from last year was lost. This year it will be the responsibility of someone to record as much as possible so we can share it with everyone who couldn't attend.

                    When I was in S.K. for Codegate a year ago Avi mentioned that the music that gets played at DEFCON and during CTF they call 'defcon music' and it motivates them! As you know there have been very good South Korean teams playing in CTF over the years. They must have brought back a love of the different music styles.. or just gotten them interested in electronica and techno. Either way it is cool.

                      Wow the requirements in order to throw a show there seem truly obnoxious. So I suppose that DIY soundsystem and lights might be seen as a scab move.

                        yes I can confirm their are no official recordings of last years event... normally the recording gear that bink and myself have used in years past was not available as it was part of the full rig that we usually rented and brought in .
                        the only question in life is , Why?

                            I'd be willing just to build a box with a monster HD and Soundforge and just sit it in the ballroom, connected to the main soundboard and record all audio that goes on on both nights. Then take it home and edit the sets apart (and maybe even do a little mastering, who knows) and hand them out (hopefully) within a month of DC being over.

                              Any rules on what sort of music, I know the general amount of folks will enjoy anything electronica... reason being is I have a band who I am good friends with. They have played multi national tours and very good when it comes to working with venues, staff, etc. The only thing is that the music is what I like to call "sludgecore" (see hatebreed + Sepultura) if this is kosher, Ill give them the go ahead (Ill need contact info for whom to put them in contact with) if the band thing works out. I wont ask either side to move unless everything is good.
