    Re: Queercon SIX!

Made it for the first time last year and was surprised at the number of people, definitely looking forward to this again.

Also, thanks to everyone who works hard to get this setup - if there is anything I can do to help please PM me.

      Lineup (subject to change)

10:00-11:30: TProphet // immersion system [sea]
11:30-1:00: DJ Bolivia // immersion system [canada]
      1:00-3:00: kM+Jose // independent [la]

As for the discussion about the programming last year - this isn't a European gay massive. It's a small underground event for gay hackers, emphasis on hackers. We try to pick DJs and programming that appeals to this audience. After all, you can hear the same tired Top 40 hits at any gay club in the world, but underground hacker DJs only happen at hacker events. We hope you'll agree that Queercon is the best gay hacker dance party EVAR! :)

Obviously you haven't been visiting the European 'scene' lately. Please visit city's like Berlin and check out what is happening there.

It surely is NOT 'Top 40'. :-)

          Re: Queercon SIX!

Since I am a DJ myself and dj-ing in a few discotheques in the Netherlands from which 1 trendy gay club, I pay extra attention to the music when I am visitting other places so my hands where itching last year :-)
Perhaps I can play a few songs this year. I will bring my hard-drive with the 'good stuff'.
          Maarten,

I may have been the DJ playing the "underground" stuff last year that you were referring to. And again last night. I was actually trying to play a decent mix of house genres, everything from more "underground" tracks with less vocals, to a number of tracks that are high up on the Beatport charts and BBC Radio 1 play right now, as Essential Selection tracks or massives at bigger British clubs. I'll try to get a track listing for my set put together later this weekend, so you can see the names of everything that I played if you weren't there to hear my set.

The DJ's who played after me, Keith and Jose, went even a bit more mainstream with a lot of great remixes and mashups of classic tracks.

I'm always looking for feedback and new tracks. If you get some time, post a listing here of some of your current favorites. I'd love to check out some of your reccomendations ...

Thanks to tProphet and everyone else for having me here to play again. It was a great night, at least until TSHTF.

          Cheers!

            Re: Queercon SIX!

just wanted to give a heads-up and say we're glad things went (seemingly) well for you again this year. it's always the pleasure of the Lockpick Village to donate half of our space for your needs on that one night, and you're always consistently good about helping us move the furniture out to give you room and when we show up the next morning it's always in good order and relatively back where it had been previously.

heh... the bathroom in the corner took a bit of a beating this year, it seemed... but that paper towel dispenser had it coming, i think. no one could get it to operate at all during the day.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

              Re: Queercon SIX!

I too was really impressed with how conscientious people were both years that I've been here in helping pick up garbage, move gear, and make sure things are fairly orderly at the end of the night. tProphet has a good crew helping him.

Maarten, back to the track listings. I guess in retrospect, I may not have been the one last year that was playing really underground. I just found the set lists from both years, so I'll post them here for you and for any others who are curious. Last year's set was definitely a lot more vocal and mainstream, in my mind, but then again, there were other DJ's playing last year that I didn't actually hear myself:

              Set from d16:

              01. Tom Leeland feat Vivian Tate, “Feel My Love” (Sven Waschinsk Mix).
              02. Allstars, “Thriller” (12-Inch Mix).
              03. Bolivia feat Mike Allison, “When I Grow Old” (Bit Funk’s Club Remix).
              04. Ashlee Simpson, “Little Miss Obsessive” (Dave Aude Club Mix).
              05. Erick E, “The Beat Is Rockin’” (Original Mix).
              06. Des Mitchell & Chr Sarah Jane Scott, “Alive” (You Make Me Feel Full Mix).
              07. Michael M, “The Beat” (Guido’s Beat Down Vocal).
              08. Jip Deluxe, “Sweat” (Jerome Robins’ Dark & Dirty Mix).
              09. Outwork feat Mr G, “Elektro” (DJ Damm vs Smaily Extended Mix).
              10. AMDL Project, “Electro Sunrise.”
              11. Mark Norman feat Celine, “Be With You” (Myon Remix).
              12. Bolivia & Cole, “Global Underground” (Deadmau5 vs Consolvo Vocal 702 Bootleg).
              13. Adam K & Shawn Austin, “40,000 Years Of Funk” (Hirshee Remix).
              14. Martin Villeneuve feat Cris Quammie, “Can You Feel” (MV Original Mix).
              15. Nick Fiorucci feat Kelly Malbasa, “Every Time You Move” (Jerome’s Mix).
              16. Mat Bradshaw, “Feel The Same” (Sex Machine Remix).
              17. Thomas Penton & Kotoswitch, “Take The Chance” (Alex Armes Mix).
              18. Mic Boogie, “Good Luck” (White Punks On Dope Remix).
              19. Ne Yo, “Closer” (Stonebridge Club Remix).
              20. Sheldon Romero feat Betty Brooklyn, “Dirty Things” (Jorge Remix).
              21. GTS feat Mink, “Everlasting Love” (DJ Mike Cruz Club Mix).
Set from d17: (ETA Aug.16: set now available as a download, see post below)

              01. David Jones & Aqua Diva, "Thriller."
              02. Electrixx, "Tetris."
              03. Creamer & K, "Forget The World."
              04. Sandy Rivera & Andy Daneill, "Whatever."
              05. Jean Elan, "Killer."
              06. Basement Jaxx, "Raindrops."
              07. Mark Ronson, "Oh My God."
              08. Reead, "Nobody's Innocent."
              09. Bailey & Fauvrelle, "Pushing Beatz."
              10. Chris Scott and Dmitry Bobrov, "Too Much Is Not Enough."
              11. Dextro, "My House Is Your House."
              12. DJ Wope, "My Generation."
              13. Heaven & Earth, "And Let's Disco."
              14. Leron Yves Eaux and Luke Star, "Fashionized."
              15. Felguk, "All Night Long."
              16. Levan, "Miau."
              17. Milk & Sugar, "Let The Sun Shine."
I guess this year's set was fairly newer stuff for the first half, and then mostly some of my own older favorites for the second half.

I don't have specific remixes identified for this year. Here's my generic disclaimer: "You'll notice that I didn't list the exact remix for each track. That's because none of them are conventional remixes. I've started taking every track that I play in sets and doing a "Bolivia's Edit" on the track. I usually cut out the major breakdowns entirely, to keep the dance floor moving. Sometimes I mix and match between a couple different remixes of a particular track. For mid-volume breakdowns, I often up the volume a few decibels. I add one or two effects throughout the track, or drop-outs on key beats. And then finally, I boost with a hard limiter so the volume ends up being fairly consistent throughout, even through the breakdowns. All in all, that keeps the dance floor a lot more aggressive, and if I ever want to give them a quick break, I can reduce volumes on breakdowns on the mixer. I find this keeps things fresh and higher energy. I'll keep a few originals with breakdowns in my crate, so I can play to a lower energy level early in the set if necessary, or so I can give the dance floor a real break late in the night, but 90% of the tracks that I play are ones that I've bastardized prior to the show."

                Re: Queercon SIX!

Wow, another incredible year for Queercon! I'm really happy the crowd was so big this year, and that we had so many first-time DEFCON attendees. Best of all, we seem to have finally hit critical mass with our target demographic; almost everyone at Queercon this year was gay! I was really excited to see how many new Queercon couples we created. :)

Huge thanks to the Lockpick Village folks for being very helpful with setup and gracious in letting us use half their space. In return, we made an extra effort to ensure that the space was in good shape after we left. Unfortunately we weren't able to move all the furniture back after the show because the floor needed to be cleaned, but I'm glad to see that the hotel followed through with their promise to reset the room. I hope that it wasn't too far off from where it was, since we didn't see the end result of this work. We also noticed that someone's frustrations were taken out on the paper towel dispenser Office Space style--PC Load Letter, anyone?

I had a lot of fun playing this year--thanks to everyone who handed me their favorite tunes to play. This was a relatively new experiment and while it didn't make for seamless mixing it really did make for a lot of fun. DJ Bolivia played an incredible set as always, and OMFG, kM and Jose blew the roof off the place! We were still bumping at 3 in the morning. Extra thanks to Keith Myers for bringing out his bass bin! Bumping sound adds a lot to a party and we wouldn't have had it without his equipment.

You know it was a really good party when the police were involved. In our case, sixteen people decided to climb up on the roof. Nobody notified me or the goons so we were unable to put a stop to it before hotel security got involved. Evidently someone up there was kicking a security camera, and someone else took apart a different security camera, and--as it turns out--casinos actually *watch* their security cameras. Priest and the DEFCON goons negotiated with the Riviera and managed to keep anyone from being arrested, but everyone caught was banned from the hotel. Guys, be glad that this is all that happened: trespassing is a felony when a casino is involved, and the Riviera was planning to have everyone arrested. Priest and Noid went out on a limb for you and you have them to thank for keeping you out of jail (literally).

We've been told that if you were banned, the Riviera may reconsider (though not immediately) if you write a sincere letter of apology. The emphasis is on "may" - general policy is that if you get kicked out of the hotel, you're banned for life (and for what it's worth, the people who were messing with security cameras were lucky not to be arrested and are unlikely to ever be unbanned). If you're seeking the hotel's forgiveness, by the way, charging back your room is not advised.

heh, were your numbers skewed because i didn't stop by with my posse to say a quick hello before hitting the Hacker Pimps party? pity that, i always like to drop in and spread good cheer for at least a little while, you guys rock in my book.

it's always our pleasure. you folk are consistently respectful and pleasant and we couldn't hope for better Skybox-roommates than your whole crowd.

If you guys hadn't done that for us on Friday night, i'm sure one of our Village attendees would have gotten around to it Saturday afternoon... seriously, what's the wisdom of putting one of those "wave your hands here" machines on the wall if it has no power? it was like some sort of sick joke, with the paper towels visible through the smoked plastic facade... as one's dripping wet hands leave little option but to use the ratty beige curtains hanging in that room.

people going up to the roof from that room is nothing new at DEFCON. for nearly as long as i can remember there hasn't even been a lock on the roof panel. (no, i'm not responsible for that... pen-test types merely develop a sense for that sort of observation) that said, i'm pleased (perhaps this isn't the best wording) that it was party people going up there at night as opposed to lockpick village attendees going up there during the day... eventhough i've never known the roof to be locked, it surely wouldn't look good to the hotel or the con if it were "those damn lockpickers opening up teh roofz0r!"

i hope that anyone who was just up there looking around manages to get themselves un-banned. people who were monkeying with hotel property, well, they get less sympathy from me at this time... even if alcohol was a factor.
