Re: If you DON'T stay at the Riv, where DO you stay?

Last year, I stayed at the Mirage for both BH and DC, which was very nice and certainly convenient for BH. I walked each day to DC and didn't mind it much, though, admittedly, I didn't socialize much for my first DC.

Like phreakmonkey, my company has no budget for conferences and training this year (layoffs this week and last), so I'll only be going to DC this year on my own dime. I'm half-inclined do to Mirage again but, part of me thinks I should go Riv to be more involved.

the Riv themselves won't tell you... but if you can ever find out what other cons are happening that weekend, check with the reservations line about getting their rate as opposed to ours. anyone have intel on that?
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Rumor had it that we have the place to ourselves this year.

Previous years when the Defcon rate was sold out, I have booked rooms under other conventions in the same hotel, one year was with the darter's, the front desk never had a noticeable problem with it.

While $102 a night is not bad for the Riv, and I understand the reasoning for that rate, the Sahara down the road is offering standard rooms at rock bottom prices, for a stay from Thursday July 30th to Sunday August 2nd, the total rate with estimated tax is just shy of $235.00

On the flip side, Stay in the main conference hotel whenever possible! which is good advice from How to Enjoy a Convention

Poolplayer's con is the only event anywhere near DEFCON's timeframe (aside from the 170 attendee family reunion taking place 2 weeks after DC) Phone recon looks bleak for getting those event rates for con time.

Convention wise, its pretty slim pickings, there is the World Shoe Association that brings in 28,000 attendees, & closest, cheapest hotel of the bunch is Circus Circus at an average rate of $63 a night. However you could stay at the Imperial Palace which also a WSA event hotel and has an average daily rate around $39 a night. Worth consideration in staying there is the RollerCon roller derby convention going on from July 29th through August 2nd.

Mind you, there are some fun conventions in the weeks after Defcon, there is the Associated Locksmiths of America Conference August 12th to the 15th. and at the Alexis Park on August 5th to the 9th there is the Lifestyle Convention.

I was referring to the Riv specifically, but you're absolutely right erehwon, CC and IP are definitely the way to go if you wanna save a buck or 2, and are not far distance wise, Circus² obviously the closest. Personally, I tend to shell out a bit for a stay in Vegas longer than 2 nights. A couple hundred dollars extra for the quality of room, service, and overall atmosphere is worth it in my book. And a close by monorail stop, if not one at the hotel itself is a must for me.

The Riv looks like they've upped their rates to $139 a night for Fri/Sat. Is that "Defcon discount" a go? I'm hearing unconfirmed reports of a $102 per night deal.

EDIT: My first post? Have I really lurked that much?

The Riv web site is telling me that the DefCon block is already full. So ... shit.

Yea, Hydruh is correct. Cool. I'm booked too. Had to call it in, but whatever.

just reserved my room... and was told something rather odd by the girl with whom i was speaking. she stated that the room rates at the Riv for mid-week stays are $130 or more, and that i would be best served as extending my DEFCON room rate of $102 for the duration of my time there (which will extend before and after the DEFCON weekend itself)

i was under the impression that the Riviera's mid-week rate was something wicked cheap, like $79. is that no longer the case?

Las Vegas Hilton is very close to the Riv and has rooms for about $60 a night. It may not be as convenient as staying at the riv, but it's still walking distance.
