    US Government: Hackers Needed

    US looks to hackers to protect cyber networks:

    General Dynamics Information Technology put out an ad last month on behalf of the Homeland Security Department seeking someone who could "think like the bad guy." Applicants, it said, must understand hackers' tools and tactics and be able to analyze Internet traffic and identify vulnerabilities in the federal systems.
    Short said the $60 million, four-year contract with US-CERT uses the so-called ethical hackers to analyze threats to the government's computer systems and develop ways to reduce vulnerabilities.

    I saw this posted on the interwebs last week and I'm not really... surprised or affected in any way shape or form. Obama (hate him or love him) has said for a while he means to inject money into cyber security. This makes plenty of opportunities open for veterans and young hackers, as long as it doesn't rely on the ole buddy system ("My cousin's nephew says he is a computer hacker, how about we get him a job?") My only reaction is scrambling to try and get in on this D:

      Working with General Dynamics personnel for my job, all I can say is they truly aren't the smartest crayons in the box!

      I wouldn't doubt the ole buddy system comes into play on this one!
      Saving the world one computer at a time...

      or possibly destroying, I haven't figured that out yet.

        So how do you feel about the company as an employer from 1 to 10? :P

          I want in on this. I want a rad uniform - maybe a Japanese design company could get in on it... the orientation videos as well! Oh yeah, and I only want to be referred to by my alias, haha.

            That'd be nice. The videos would have to be made like the Dharma training videos.

              Am I the only one that saw this as 'red' and immediately thought of him in a Red Shirt and beaming down to the planet to never return?
              A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

                lol, we use a lot of their equipment and the main personnel I deal with are mechanics for some of our vehicles. Those guys seem alright until you ask them for help...then they are complete dicks.

                As for the rest of the company, I see them too rarely to make an assumption.

                I stand by my statement that they aren't the smartest though because they leave an impression when they do show up.

                  lol. I read this news a few days ago and reminds me of something similar in my own country. after an alleged chinese infiltration on most government sensitive network. the philippine government is thinking of putting a rewards on ethical hackers that will test our 2010 poll automation. roughly $2 millions on just one job. But rejected by critics...

                      How 'bout a definition of the term 'hyperbole'?

                      Oh, wait, that would be the article.

                      "Likewise, how would you feel if police departments went around hiring sex offenders to investigate rapes?"

                      Would you hire a nuclear bomb - for the police bomb squad?

                      So, does this guy actively disbelieve in white hat hacking / penetration testing? Or does he just think it's worthless? Because every computer system 'has thousands of vulnerabilities', as the writer points out, as though that's an excuse not to look for them.

                      He actually does mention the penetration testing side of things, but shoots it down because of one line from the report, that feds are looking for hackers, " 'not to prosecute them, but to pay them to secure the nation's networks.' "

                      Couldn't that just be them playing on the public perception of the word 'hacker,' rather than these feds saying, "let's find people with rap sheets and give them Top Secret clearances?"** I just can't help but think they'd use the word for the media traction it would give their ad - if you have an article written about your Craaazy Advert, then that's just another free advert. They just didn't anticipate any/many negative reactions.

                      I like this little gem, too:

                      "The Red Teams at the National Security Agency and the military information warfare commands have had successes that dwarf even the most noted hacker exploits, and what makes them even better is that you will never hear about them."

                      And we know that they were awesome... how? Our infinite faith in the NSA?
