  • Defcon mention in Numb3rs

I, like many of you, watch Numb3rs.

The latest episode, Angels and Demons (s05e23 for those of you with torrent clients firing up) had me rewinding the mythbox a few times to confirm what I was hearing.

At one point this cult leader is spouting off about how he needs Amita to perform this hack for him, he starts listing accomplishments including speaking at Defcon, which somehow qualifies her to break into a credit card company to pull a Tyler Durden.

I went back through 10 years of programs and didn't see a hot Indian mathematician on the schedule. Did I miss that talk or was it like Kaminsky and always while I'm speaking? Why didn't someone
pull me from the l0st box for that one?

Hey DT, we should throw Navi Rawat an invite, make the fiction reality :)

    well, I don't watch Numb3rs, but
"hot Indian mathematician" got my interest,

and I for one, would most definitely attend a talk by Navi Rawat, In fact she would not have to even talk....hehehe.

now to add something relevant to this topic.......ah later, Ive got an image gallery to peruse.

hmmm... never seen Numb3rs. are we in for a Navi Rawat vs Pauley Perrette debate on the forums? heh. "paging DaKahuna, mr. DaKahuna, please pick up a white courtesy telephone."
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Pauley Perrette any day of the week.

a quick bit of Googling had me come across yet another show i've never heard of and actress/character who could apparently be added into the mix... any votes for Kirsten Vangsness?

what little i'm seeing, i like. sadly, i dislike TV enough that it's unlikely i'll catch Criminal Minds anytime soon. maybe i'll view a little bit of it using teh online machine once in a while if i get particularly curious.

I've watched Criminal Minds a couple of times and didn't like it much. Numb3rs is ok, but I think sometimes they do have a tendency to go way overboard. I think that with Pauley having the background she does, they do make an attempt at keeping it within the bounds of reality, with only the occasional walk into the absurd.

If I were to choose who I wanted to see giving a talk at a Con, I'd say Pauley, because chances are, she'd actually have something intelligent to say and wouldn't just be a pretty face.

Hehehe, I was half joking about an invite but either would be interesting to speak though Pauley jumps ahead in my vote due to my appreciation for tall, dark and scary.

I have no idea what talks might be possible, but maybe something about Brainiacs in media and how shows are now not so afraid to show smart people as hero's (CSI, Numb3rs, NCIS, etc).

heh... add that to the recent article claiming that IT workers have the best sex and it's quite an ego-boost all around.

granted, this article appeared in the Sun, has no real supporting data beyond a anonymous survey (hacked web poll, perhaps?), and even if it's on the up-and-up, we're talking about sex in Britain... i'm pretty sure that there's a different standard over there. heh, at least in comparison to the wild and crazy sex of the DEFCON scene.

I have to admit, "hot Indian mathematician" kind of got my attention as well. I've never seen Numb3rs before, but I might have to watch that episode...now that Ashes to Ashes and US Life on Mars are over with.

Render, I sincerely hope the "Kaminski Curse" is over with. The guy I really felt sorry for was Jason Scott at Shmoocon 2, he had something like six attendees.

I like smart women too - I have to admit to acquiring slight crushes on both Mercuri and Dunin after I saw them speak at the con.

BTW, if any of you are fans of the scientific/medical/forensic/procedural TV shows I would recommend a Canadian show called Regenesis about a CDC-like organization. It is torrentable and available on Hulu.

Hot Indian mathematician! Now thats a great starting point. overall Angels and Devils was a great episode, I expected a bit more for a season finale, but I like it. Navi Rawat is one of my reasons to watch Numb3rs, love the way they use real mathematical solving tools to get to the bottom of things, but just as streaker69 mentioned, sometimes they go too far away from keeping it within the bounds of reality. I surely hope DT can persuade Navi Rawat to attend Defcon... or we can just upload a cool SMS pic invite into her cell :)
