Hackajar announced in a post a few days ago that there was not going to be a EFF Summit this year. So the forum meet may fill that space nicely.

First, the forum meet isn't large enough to warrant the Top of the Riv (if that is what you are suggesting). If we wanted to meet, setup a party, and then invite everyone to our party, I'd be all for that but I just don't think we have the direction to pull that off at the moment.

Then there is the speculation that someone is already vying for that space.

If you are merely suggesting that we meet Thursday night around 9, then I'll be available. Because it is somewhat pre-con, small, and I Iike you people, I'd be willing to bring requested drinks for all. Social lubricant and what-not.

I would say after the Toxic BBQ, Normally I leave the BBQ after almost everyone is gone since I help with the cleanup, and get back to catch the tail end of the Summit.. around 9'ish.

valanx posted that suggestion too, but someone else may have gotten that space first. I think they are still discussing the detail of whatever it is with the people involved. I'm still waiting for a final decision on it, too.

Okay, it looks like Thursday after the TBBQ has taken the lead. There are still three days left (I'm counting today as one of those days) to get your vote in if you haven't already done so.

Also, what would guys think about maybe having a donation box for the EFF at the Forums Meet? With the Summit a no-go this year, I'd like to see if we could help make up what the Summit might have brought in for the EFF guys.

Aww, I'm not one to easily downgrade someone to hate status, lol. Despite popular belief I'm not really evil :-P and it takes a lot for me to truly despise someone,something like that would be very low on the list of reason. I can't say I'm innocent however, my Wrath has been known well in small circles, but I'm generally easy to work with and will certainly do everything I can to help, lol.

As Nikita pointed out, space is scarce during Defcon. So no there will be only "one" Meeting.

Second: I will not be kicked out of a room this year, so once a time and room are schedule that's it (Plus I don't want to make Nikita hate me, so I'm only going to make her find me a room once).

so is there no official Summit party happening thursday night? still hoping for confirmation on that one, because i don't want the Vegas 2.0 crew thinking that we're not considering them at all or stepping on their toes.

from what i can see, however, there is nothing mentioned anywhere and no sub-forum created for that happening.

hence, thursday after the BBQ gets my vote for sure... a comfortable time with no rush for the people coming from the park and wanting a shower. maybe 21:00? is that too early or too late?

If Con space is a problem, why not have it in a public area? I know most hotels usually have open space with tables and chairs out in the middle of no where that could be used for something like this...not that I can immediately think of any area like that at the Riv, but Im sure if I was looking at floorplans I could find it.. Just some random space that isnt being used for anything else, say the pool area and/or the courtyard. You get the idea.

Well, because those areas are being used.. for their previously intended purposes. That and because saying " Meet in the far back corner of the contest area where two tables are pushed together with a happy birthday balloon" is a lot less official sounding than Meet in room 227, not to mention harder to control the surroundings and noise factor of the rest of the world walking by or drunkenly discussing their credentials to the world. Giving the forums meet anything less than assigned and closed quarters is belittling it's importance, in my honest opinion. IF a second, independently ran forums meet was to be organized as "hey if you can't make it, some of us will be hanging out poolside at midnight on Friday" was to be suggested then by all means. But those of us who are NOT regular members and for the purpose of meeting potential new members, an official place and time needs to be committed to prior to the conference.

Im willing to bet that theres a few that wont make it to the event no matter which time you chose, so why not have multiple times for the boardies to meet up to try an accommodate as many as possible?

Because I don't have the space to accommodate the forums meet twice, that is why. Although in principle that is not a bad idea faye, however we just can not reserve the space when it is in such high demand and limited space as it is. Remember, in order to make sure I can actually assign you a room, I need answers and quickly.

The reason I suggested Thursday is because I can get you a room, an assigned no one gets to move you or kick you out or think they had rights to it for any reason (other than pure insanity) a regular speakers room, Q &A room, or one of the side Capri rooms, depending on how the schedule fills out.There will be room somewhere on that day, that is a guarantee.

It's worth noting though this same discussion happens every year, doing it before or after the BBQ, doing it on or off site, doing it on Friday.........and eventually you guys decide too late for anything to be really advertised or clarified.

You are all going to have to come to terms that you can't please everyone every time and that you need to think of the silent members and the ones who haven't signed up yet, what is going to be best for the most amount of people and BAM, do that.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday are harder days for me to schedule you guys a room, simply put we have too many speakers and other events that are larger than the forums meet that take priority. In no way does that mean you guys are not deserving, which is why I will try my best to get you an assigned area. The quicker you make up your minds, the easier it is for me to make things happen for you.

Maybe someone might not be able to make a Thursday event at all because they're not at con just yet, so for them a Friday time slot would be best...... but maybe someone else would rather have it Thursday because Fridays and Saturdays are just too hectic for them and whatnot....but someone else might like the idea of meeting up Saturday before the panels start...when everyone else plans to be passed out and hung over.

There are other cons that have a boardies meet up, and if Im not mistaken, they schedule the event throughout the con at different times to make it possible for as many people to attend as they can. Im not saying that should or even could happen here, just an idea of what is possible.

Thursday before DC101 is pretty darn early in the day, particularly for people attending the DC Shoot way outside of the city.

Friday is always just insane, as is Saturday, heh. As talks end (how late are they running this year?) people have very little time to grab dinner, shower, get changed, etc. before parties are starting.

I like the idea of a Thursday evening event, but there is very little time in between the TBBQ and the EFF Sumit (actually... is the latter happening? i haven't seen much on the forums, and if it's not then Thursday night would be perfect for a forum meet up in my opinion.)

Here's the deal, with complications in the past with short notice on room changes, no notice to room changes, and whatnot I want to get this event know as the Forums Meet finally working like the well oiled machine we know it can be. So please help me out by voting, after all this is our Forum and our Forums Meet.
