You actually made my loose a little beer with the resulting gutlaugh from that one, Thorn, I want you to know that.

The Canadians walk point in the continuing struggle for legal venison. Got it.

I figured Defcon wasn't going anywhere. Thanks noid! I'll have a look at the calendar.

I will toss my hat in the ring agreeing with the seniors on the list. I am a .NET specialist - among the lowest of the low in the eyes of many of the serious security specialists, yet since I came with my hat in one hand and a beer in the other I have been treated with nothing but respect. Occasionally when I said something particularly stupid, I was greeted with some well deserved ribbing, so I wouldn't advise the thinnest of thin skins to attend (or if they do, don't say much). If you can take just a little hazing, you'll be just fine.

In all honesty, last year was my first year and while I feel that I have a passing knowledge on security and related issues, I know that I am far down on the totem at events like Defcon. As long as you keep the "humble" part of your attitude as well as the "interested" part, you'll do fine.

I have to agree totally with Noid, and mostly with HighWiz here. DEFCON is definitely a life changing experience, even if you do tend to be the fly on the wall. But to contrast that, being even a little active makes the experience 100x more enjoyable. Go to the con, socialize with new people, learn new things, don't be a dipshit, buy a Goon a beer or 3, and you'll do just fine, and leave with all kinds of tales to tell.

Well, I can assure you that DEFCON isn't going anywhere. Also, theres conferences all over the place you can attend too. Some are more expensive, others are less. Some are more business focused others are more social. Most are on the DEFCON calendar..check 'em out
