There's also the "show up early" trick which has been working really well for me lately. I show up really early, like 9AM, and try to check in. Hotels never seem to have cheap rooms available and clean so I get a free upgrade! The key is to be really polite.

Nice! Good to know the $20 trick works at the Riv.

I can vouch for the $20 trick, I handed her a 20 with my passport and scored a 'free' upgrade...

even if you don't get comped, there's always the old $20 between your ID and CC trick :)

Am currently booked for 5 days at the RIV and called in to try to get a cheaper rate then $89 for some of the days but sadly no dice. Looks like the Saturday is booked up so they aren't willing to lower the price for a new booking.

I tried calling the reg reservation line, didn't get a manager. Not sure is anyone else had success bargaining.

It does indeed pay to join up, For the week prior to con, I've got offers from Planet Hollywood for $59/night, with $20 free play, and a complimentary bottle of liquor for each night. NYNY is offering up to 4 rooms for $56 on weekdays, $89 on weekends, with complimentary upgrades to Park Avenue rooms. Both of these deals should be available for any players club members up to July 31. Not staying there for Defcon, but I've already spoken with PH, and they can extend their offer if you stay from before the 31st up to the 2nd. NYNY told me to pound the proverbial sand.

Cross posted in the "If you don't stay at the riv where do you stay" thread in case people didn't see it:

Just a note that if you have a Riviera Player club card, call the number for that instead of regular reservations and book under the players club rather than the con rate.

Just booked the hotel for ~$40/night savings overall. Nights are between $45-55 and one night is free.

Just saying that sometimes having a wife along who plays the nickle slots pays of other than on the slots.

Well, I called up and managed to get a better deal than the defcon rate, but nowhere near what you mention above. Though I was never given a chance to use a "special code", so maybe I did/said something wrong when I called up.

I was in Vegas over Memorial Day and upgraded my room size reservation, extended the stay over Defcon, and got the same price.

It pays to join the slot clubs

    Hello,
I just confirmed my reservations for DEFCON., Not at the Riv, but downtown (where I am very comfortable). Arrive Jul 30, depart Aug 3. Four nights @ The Plaza for $25 (three comped, the last night for $25). I am NOT a big gambler, I'm just a member of the slot club and got an email offer.

Last year for DEFCON I had a similar deal at The Riviera. Five nights and paid for one ($45).

    Sign up and save.
