  • producing cheap T-shirts

    Hey hey,

I could have sworn there was a thread about this in the past, but a few searches on the forums didn't turn up much.

When you people create shirts for their various contests and events, whom do you use? Do you have connections with a friend or family member in the business, do you go with a national company (like one where a web site lets you upload your own design and author the shirt there) or a smaller company whom we might not know at all?

This year i'm thinking of making a shirt for the DEFCON Shoot. The design i'm toying with is pretty simple, and may turn out basically like this...

... many folk who have bought rifles with "scary" features like a pistol grip, a birdcage on the muzzle, a bayonet lug, etc etc etc will get the joke. i have wound up with so many of those little orange tags laying around that i started wondering what i could do with them. they're too flimsy for turning into keychains or con badge decorations, so i figured maybe they'd make a good inside joke on a shirt.

If i want to produce these for the shoot, i'd like to be able to do it for bottom dollar so that people don't pay out the ass but still have something that will stand up to laundry day repeatedly. Think i could make these for about $10 each or something?

Happy to hear suggestions on companies.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I use a local guy in CO who started out printing out shirts for punk bands like Decendents and All. He's stoned a lot though, thus kinda unreliable but retardedly cheep. Maybe could place an order for the Shoot and fedex ground it to you or something.

drop me an email and I can tell you how not to get ripped off at shirt companies if you want.

Our company uses Jakprints: http://jakprints.com for everything. Quality is high, service is great, not sure if the price is right for you, but we buy relatively small runs and sell at 100% profit with no problem. Also, single color will be cheaper.

how cheap is retardedly cheap? $10 a shirt? less? if you've used him personally to make things, what sort of cotton quality and ink duration have you experienced?

i'm not sure if it is either, maybe you can fill me in a bit there, heh. same question as above... are we talking in the range of under $10 per shirt?

yeah, that's my plan... front and back printing using only orange on black shirts.

              Your pricing should be:

              100+ = 5.50 per shirt
              50+ = 6.50 per shirt
              25+ = 7.50 per shirt

+ $15 1 time charge for the screen setup

HOWEVER - I just noticed this:

              2XL Add $1.50 ea.
              3XL Add $2.00 ea.
              4XL Add $2.50 ea.
              5XL Add $3.00 ea.

              Anyway, that should be accurate.

                Re: producing cheap T-shirts

I use a local customer of mine for the Toxic BBQ shirts, and the shirts I did for Wifi Village..

Pricing is scaled similar to Schuylers post.
But I also use the high grade Beefy T's that arent paper thin, and those are about $2 per shirt more expensive than cheapies.

But his pricing is pretty close to what I pay.. I get a 3 color process on a high quality shirt for around $9-$11 a shirt. Extra large sizes are additional as well.
also they usually charge additional for front/back or shoulder printers.

I've sent you the info on my printer. Normally quick and pretty helpful on any issues that come up.

Yup, I forgot to mention that there is an additional charge for each color in an extra location, however I did include it in the estimate.

Jakprints are good stuff, but it sounds like you can find a local, smaller or more community-integrated vendor that matches their price service and quality. I mean, I love Jakprints, but I don't think they're hurting for work like some people might be.

I use a local guy for all the t-shirts I do... I used him for the first ToxicBBQ t-shirts (I tried going online for the next ToxicBBQ year and got crappy quality). If you want the location of his store/contact info, just drop me an email.
