  • Gmail leaves beta, launches "Back to Beta" Labs feature

The thought of Gmail (or any Google product) leaving Beta is akin to an urban legend but the "Back to Beta" feature sounds straight from The Onion.

I have a theory about google and their perpetual betaness.

As long as they hold their products in beta, they're not responsible for problems. They can always claim, "Hey, it was beta, what do you want?"
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

Microsoft has been doing that for years, without the beta tag.
