  • omfg... we now have a second next-gen TTB

this is amazing... what an outpouring of goodwill from people. i'm truly touched. not only are we maybe 24 hours away from the first of the next-gen TTBs being completed and full of content... we may actually have a second one in time for DEFCON.

Schuyler is sending me a Pelican case and Charlie has another drive on its way to me. Thank AST for nabbing the drive for the first one... i couldn't have completed it without him after buying that enclosure.

This second TTB will be given it's first assignment vising the unit of a good friend of one DEFCON core team member. Then it will join in with the usual tour of other locations around the globe.

So here's the final push, people... do you think that among you people would pool together an be able to order one more enclosure by week's end so we can have this ready for DEFCON, as well? (remember, i leave for Black Hat wicked early due to trainings. i'd need to be completing these this weekend.)

"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

You continue to amaze me with your ability to make these things happen. It's great PR for hackers that we need more of as well as a great thing for the troops stuck overseas.

I'm still trying to find a way to get one of these to the Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

Awesome thing you're doing, Deviant. And the same to all involved in the process.

Ahh don't feel bad Render....we have the pleasure of hosting the Irish Navy this week here in Philadelphia. Yes, the Irish Navy. We have one of their ships docked at Penn's Landing. It's their only ship with a flight deck, and the only one that has ever crossed the Atlantic. Of course if it has a flight deck that means they must have an Airforce. The world is truly in trouble now.

as i so often remind people... i don't personally do much of anything, short of keep on flogging the issue in order to keep certain projects or contests or games from permanently living on the back burner.

thank jeebus it always take big brains, good looks, or a thick rolodex to get things done in the scene, or else i'd have never pulled anything off at DEFCON or anywhere else. more than anything else, all you have to do is persevere through the general background noise of everyday life.

(this is getting a bit off-topic for the TTB, but it's a valuable point for all in the community to discuss at times)

sometimes the most successful contests and things at DEFCON aren't the ones with the best idea or biggest prize... often all it really takes is dedication to keep hyping things and not let people grow apathetic, but doing this without being a nagging, spamming pest. people who make that delicate balance and have something good to offer will succeed simply because of all the good will and great energy in the community.

perfect example... the hardware hack village. we've had "villages" at DEFCON in one way or another in the past, but these guys came from almost out of nowhere with great ideas and lots of good energy and blew the doors off when they first arrived. much of this, in my mind, was seeing the organizers channel their excitement into threads here on the forums, converting bystanders to interested participants and then converting interested participants into pseudo-staff.

the TTB project is no different. all i had was an idea and the dedication to keep talking about it... everyone else here deserves the credit for the parts actually coming together and the destinations being reached.

i'll say it again and again (heh, for that is my motto with contests and events, as read above)...

all we need are destinations. find a unit through anyone (does Panthera work in close contact to anyone still over there or is he more or less fully in the energy industry waaay up north now?)

is that what that is? i keep seeing that boat whenever i drive over the Ben and wondered what's going on there. according to news items, "the Eithne will be open for free public tours until 4 p.m. today (tuesday) and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday." i'll have to go check it out.

sereyna has stepped up and offered $25 for the enclosure... and i believe we have two good, deserving destinations lined up.

firstly, the individual noid mentioned from the scene in Seattle was on our radar for some time.

secondly, i met an Airman Williams as recounted in a tale of travel here. he took a TTB business card and i'm pleased to say he responded to our offer. i'd love to see his unit receive the TTB at Bagram for a while.

what do people think of this plan... at DEFCON erehwon gets at least one, if not both, of the TTBs. he can hang on to them for a week or two, letting servicemembers who pass through his USO post copy content during layovers, etc. then he can coordinate either a shipment or a hand-carry of the cases to the field.

                        thoughts?

heh... and i also just noticed, the second HDD had arrived, too. so many boxes are spread out with gear on my bed, etc. that it's hard to keep track of everything.

                          Gang,

Forgive me for asking, but what is the TTB project all about? I've read these postings (and all linked posts) and the other TTB post (and linked posts) and I can't really tell what it's about.

I'd love to help the greater CON community via PayPal, I just would like a quick rundown of what this project is really about.

Again, sorry, if I've missed the elementary description elsewhere in here!

I'm jacked for DEFCON in 2 weeks --- it's my 2nd CON after going the first time last year.

                          Respectfully,
                          Club

It is a fairly unique name, and a trivial search of the Internet yields exactly what you are looking for. (I am reminded of Rainbow's End every time I answer in this manner.)

Or, since I already have the link up, just go here: http://deviating.net/ttb/
