He has room for 1 or 2 more sane people in his minivan. No smoking in the van though.

The site for the dc shoot says people meet in the lobby at 6:30am and we all take off at 7:00am. I plan to wander around between 2 locations at 6:30am that might be a lobby. (The front area by the hotel room registration and the area by the convention space which acts as a lobby for the convention center at the riv.)

Also, I will be leaving the defcon shoot at whatever time will reasonably get at back to the riv at or befor noon-- I have things planned later on Thursday.

I don't usually check the forums while at con, but I was looking for which lobby to gather.

I have a gps programmed with the published lat and long, just in case the car we are following gets away from us.
We're taking off in a few minutes....

Call noid in next few minutes or find some other ride, man.

    Good luck!

Hmmm, I would assume the lobby where the Defcon entrance is, but I usually am wrong when I assume. I'll be sending the SO off on a jet plane at 5:30 and catching the Deuce back up to grab my stuff and be at the Riv by 6:30-45.

I regret that I cannot attend the defcon shoot that i've been so pumped about since march! teh suck. anyways, i'll just be arriving on thursday at 10:30, which is too late to actually be able to go out and have a good time unless i rent a car and go let loose with driveby's in the hood of LV. BUT, on a lighter side, if anyone is attending CarolinaCon this coming March, I am organizing a shootout on private land where no one will bother us about any types of weapons or ammo. let me know if anyone that will be attending has any tips or suggestions. thanks, and see you at teh motherfuckin con.

    -chill.

Heh.. I know we are almost at zero hour, so it looks like I will be able to make it, and will have a ride. I am not sure yet on if we will be able to bring anyone else with us though, if so I will make it known as soon as I can confirm.

I believe the Riv is a full service Hertz location. When I made my reservation for a vehicle I was given the option of picking it up there. I could be talked into making 2 trips being a Monkey Butler especially if it involved stopping at Starbucks(my only vice) along the way. :-)

    A travelers trick
I'll throw one more rental car trick, most people rent the cheapest car on the lot and there are plenty of those cars, so you're likely going to be stuck with that bait and switch they do on the website dumping you with a Kia. This trick works if you know what is the most popular car rented at that location and more often than not the reservation with that segment of their inventory will be over-rented. With the economy being what it is, and rental car companies wanting to keep you as a customer, they usually will upgrade to the next car up for the same price or sometimes cheaper.

Yes this costs more than renting the Ford Escort or like model (The Kia) but Las Vegas is bloody hot this time of the year and nothing is better than a car that blows out ice cold air conditioning better than your hotel room.

If your credit card covers insurance on the rental car, don't buy the extra coverage the rental agent tries to sell you, unless you go completely gonzo and get the coverage with the condition that you only drop off the key and the police report on how you totaled their Crown Vic. Try not to grin too devilishly, and there are only so many times you can go all 'Dukes of Hazzard' before they catch on.

I've still got room for 2 and some gear... I'll try to remember to throw some bottled water in a cooler before I head out in the morning.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

i've got you marked down now. it is my sad duty to remark that we are now in $20 shirt territory (not just for you, but for all others who are still interested in seeing if extra shirts can be tacked on to the existing group) but yes, an XL will be made available... and i'll keep a 2XL on-hand in case the shrink info isn't accurate.

I find that hard to believe, especially with all that hardware you usually travel around with.

however, as far as vehicles are concerned we've only got about a baker's dozen seemingly planned for. now while that might work in theory if folk are prepared to get friendly and trustworthy really quickly at 07:00 at the Riv thursday morning, a bit more planning on that front wouldn't go amiss.

If you get to your destination, where ever it maybe, and decide at the last minute that you would like to rent a car, and are greeted by the rental agent at the counter with a sneering sorry sir or madam we are all booked up. Do not despair good friend because you are a hacker. You are a master at bending the rules to make life work for you. You are a not a mere mortal. Walk away from said counter and open your cell phone or internet enabled PDA and either call the rental car company or go to their website(works for Hertz every time) and make a reservation for that day. Hang up / disconnect with your reservation number and walk back over to the same mere mortal at the counter who dared to deny you a rental car and with that same sneer say: "yes I have a reservation, here is my number, go fetch me my car mere mortal."

NOTE - the organizers of the DC Shoot (that is to say, me) will NOT be providing transportation options in any official sense whatsoever. you are NOT guaranteed a ride out to the Lovell Canyon site just by merely showing up in the lobby that morning.

it's way too far for a cab to be sensible, and while there's a Hertz rental car desk at the Riv, i don't know how easily one could get a car that morning or if they do one-day rentals without raping you in the asshole on price.

the point is... consider your options now. look over the official participants roster and see who appears to have a ride open. poke them with a PM and ask if you can have a seat if you're in need. (don't forget to discuss what equipment you'll be carrying... it does little good if you are sharing a spot in someone's BMW M3 and you're carrying an M240 Bravo and crates of ammo plus boxes of targets, food, water, etc.)

also, if you already have a ride but this is not reflected on my main list, please PM me so i can stop worrying about you. it gives me great joy to see the check marks fill up on planning lists... so let me know if you have a ride or if you work a ride out with someone else.

PMs are great, but posting here in this thread makes even more sense... since it may take me a day to update the list but others will see your changes in status right here in realtime if you post.

have at it! i'll see you all very soon!
