In most places this is true, however, in Las Vegas it generally is not. Frias Management, which owns most of the cab companies that run the strip, is not owner operator...the drivers work off commission. In fact, I dont think I have ever seen a leased cab in Vegas, and I have lived here for 15 years.

Interesting fact which might explain why: Many automotive manufacturers actually "give" vehicles to cab companies in Vegas to run them for test purposes. it facilitates cheap vehicle testing in one of the harshest heat environments available. I used to manage testing like this for Chrysler. ALL Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge cabs with the Frias logo on them are test vehicles.

So, do tip cabbies if they are deserving, and watch out for the ones that "long haul" you through he airport tunnel to get to your hotel...this adds $5+ in un-necessary fare. Report those cabs to Taxicab Authority.

I come from Australia where tipping is an extra for exemplary service.
I guess I better stock up on dollar bills!

      Resevoir Dogs kicks ass.
I wish I could do that in the USA. The tipping system in the USA is MORONIC!!!! A straight % based system is total shit. Okay, so I went to a restaurant with a friend of mine. We both ordered soft drinks, and then for the meal, he ordered a chicken dish that cost $10. Me on the other hand, I went with a Steak and Ribs combo that cost $20. The bill comes and his tip is roughly half of what mine should be. Let me ask you a question, did the waiter/waitress do ANY more work for my meal? Why should I tip twice as much, just because I wanted to eat a nice steak and ribs? Or consider two people that order the same meal, but one orders a water, and the other a coke. A coke costs $2-4, did the waiter/waitress do extra work for the coke? Not likely. Yet, according to the tipping "rules" she deserves 0.30-0.60 more than the water drinker. How does that make sense?

The point of this is, while tipping may be required by our society, tipping a % based amount is total bullshit.

Sir, I will remind you that nothing prevents you from tipping more. The percentage thing is to remind you that at least X amount is what you should be expecting. I frequently over tip, especially when times are hard. I never tip less than five dollars for anything. The amounts even out (by the way) as long as you're following that percentage thing.
