  • Other Cons/Gatherings

Alright, did a quick forum search and got nothing in the last couple of years (search terms Toorcon, Shmoocon, PhreakNIC, Other Conferences).

What conferences and/or gatherings would you consider to be worth the time and money to go to? I've been to Defcon this year and last, Shmoocon this year, and HOPE last year. I considered a number of others, including Notacon, Carolinacon and Neighborcon (oh you deceptively named little thing you!), but couldn't either because of expenses or work (I travel. A lot. I'm currently in North Carolina and will be finishing the month in Texas. *sigh*).

I'm currently looking at PhreakNIC and Toorcon, but I don't want to restrict the conversation in any way. I see Toorcon and LayerOne frequently showed up in searches here (lots of results!), and I was asked at DC if I had been to either in the past. PhreakNIC only had 17 results for the search, and several mentioned it was a smaller conference. I'm definitely planning on returning to Shmoocon and HOPE next year though. Just want to fill out my schedule with some other events.

I love when I lose my question in the middle. Here's the TL:DR - "What conferences and/or gatherings would you consider to be worth the time and money to go to?"

Just a note shmoocon tickets go faster than Hanna Montana tickets in Jr High.

Sorry, you misunderstood. I searched the FORUMS to see if the thread had been done before. Apologies for being unclear.

EDIT: For some reason, Bing is actually blocked at my work. Google is slow as crap too.

              Re: Other Cons/Gatherings

This was my first year of cons (shmoocon, notacon, defcon), and they've all been awesome. I second the statement about shmoocon tickets. You need to be sitting on your comp watching the clock and hitting reload until the second you can order them. Even then, in some cases, I have heard it's not enough.

I've heard LayerOne, OuterZone, and PhreakNIC are also fantastic. PhreakNIC is a smaller con, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Notacon is smaller and it was quite informative/fun. Something to think about.

                  Re: Other Cons/Gatherings

I went to Notacon for the first time this year, had an incredible time. With an ~300 person con you get to spend a lot more time with far fewer people. Makes for interesting, longer-form conversations. Be aware, though, that it's a conference as much about art as it is about tech.

This upcoming will be my first Shmoo & I'm stoked. I'll also be at Sector this year, no real idea of how that will be. And if you have enough love for physical security to attend an entire con about it, try to get into LockCon. It will be in Turkey in 2010.

                    Curses foiled again!

I was hoping to post the same question, "If you could only go to one other con this year, which one would it be?"
I was thinking of going to Layerone, but the timing is not good, maybe Shmoocon if I can swing the tickets.

You have to watch those Canadian hackers. Turn you back on your laptop for a second and it's Goatse on your screen .

You should attend/check out LayerOne, Toorcon and Shmoocon.
                            Especially, LayerOne.

Awesome, look me up in whatever their version of a lockpicking village is, I'll be helping out there. Never been to Sector before.
