Not Captain Trips, but with this article, we may see the rise of the Planet of the Apes.

This is a perfect example of what Thorn was talking about in another thread, with regard to the terms the press uses and their handling of it:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle...le_local_.html

Why the tech sector handles it a little better, it's still not much of improvement.

    http://www.switched.com/2009/10/28/c...-the-internet/

Big scary words and with a Disney pseudo evil creature, the pig, or more accurately SWINE. I think we as a society are capable of producing the type of hype & fear that could cripple the internet. I don't think the disease exists yet, that would cripple the internet from the perspective of lots of people telecommuting.

This disease would have no cure, be contagious(specifically airborne), but not kill or kill very slowly. Thus leaving people as carriers, but slowly dieing, but still functional. Even then, given the fact of dieing, how many people will choose to continue to work.

There are many facts about a given disease that IT Professionals should consider before allocating company resources to preparing for it. Comments welcome.

You went in and got tested, that's just as bad as getting the vaccine, they implanted the chip during the test.

I was curious, knowing that the bacteria needs contact to spread, and I finally found references to the article (google terms were "Necrotizing Fasciitis surgeon farted evanston"). It appeared in 2001, and was referenced in the Chicago Tribune and on the local television (whichever is Channel 5).

There's nothing to substantiate it beyond the opinion of a television reporter, and a whole lot of adding up facts by magic, rather than by evidence. Nothing in *any* medical journal (and believe me, it would have been there, due to the publish or perish phenomenom). What is more likely is that (and I know this is going to scare people, and I'm sorry) the physician had just not washed his hands properly before surgery. There is strong evidence that this happens (via hidden cameras), and absolutely no evidence that this bacteria can be transmitted via a fart.

The article said that mother, twins, and surgeon had all been treated, and were doing fine, which is a good ending to what could have been a tragedy.

Last year I didn't get a flu shot, and I didn't get the flu. Oh, wait. The last time I had the flu was 1976 (and that was because I was in the hospital for surgery, and everyone in the hospital that had surgery that day got the flu (thanks to someone who should have stayed home).

See? There are benefits to being antisocial (and to eating right, getting adequate sleep, fresh air, and exercise). Still, my money's on the antisocial bit.

    If you're young enough.

I had the mist a couple of years ago when I still qualified, and it works well.

My main point is if you know it, damage done or not. But none the less, I concede, it would be damn near impossible to enforce, and is more a matter of decency than anything. Though the airlock/cone of silence does sound appealing...

Those who knowingly go about their business coughing on everything/everyone like it's just another day is just a pet peeve of mine. Especially if the symptoms haven't yet become fully pronounced, but they have a good idea that they are sick. Not cool.

A more suitable option would be for employers (some do, and it's a great idea) is to simply offer the shot to everyone at no cost to the employee, take it or leave it, your choice, the option is there. Enforcement being a non-issue at that point.

I'm just talking about a policy that would keep those who know they are contagious with cold/flu, etc. that can be passed around by picking up the wrong phone or using the wrong keyboard out of the office.
The problem with that idea is though, you're contagious before you know if, you've already done the damage to your co-workers, granted, you can do more damage, but you've already passed it along.

Maybe all businesses should have high intensity UV lighting at the entrances to kill anything that's already residing, and then everyone could work in their own little airlock/cone of silence.

Me, I try to stay in my office and avoid as much human contact as possible, but that's just SOP.

Where does that end? Granted, it's a dick move if you know you have the flu or a cold or something like that, but if you start granting powers like that to HR to determine if you should be allowed at work if you're contagious it would need to be well defined. Next thing you know, if you have something like Hep A,B,C, HIV, or even Herpes, they'll send you home or find a way to get rid of you.

Plus, most of the time, you're contagious before you even feel any symptoms at all.
