"Scaffold toggle pin". The type you're describing seems to be either the SL-39 or SL-42 as seen on this page:

There are a lot of "toggle" devices that can be used with scaffolds so you might want to see if you can find a manufacturer's name/model to get exactly want you want.

Hey all,

Since it's early on a monday, most all of my theater folk are still in bed at the moment or else i'd be able to try to ask some of them. I have seen a very useful piece of hardware that acts as a retaining clip on the end of rods or pipes used in construction of framing, scaffold, etc. However, while i can accurately describe and draw them, i don't have a clue as to whether or not they have proper "name"... and this makes trying to source them for a project difficult on calls to suppliers or even google searches.

Sometimes, the ends of rods will have a notch or slot and a metal plate that extends outward, ultimately appearing at perhaps a 10 to 15 degree angle. Typically in my experience, the plate is spring-loaded... so the rod can be inserted through a guide hole, the retaining plate pops out the other side (like sticking an umbrella through a knothole in a fence) and then the use of either pliers or even just a pinch with one's fingers can allow disassembly.

Do they have a name? i have a really useful plan for my metal luggage cases to make stacking, transport, etc. easy but can't attempt to fabricate anything without sounding like an incompetent fool on the phone. (i mean, perhaps i am one, but i don't want to sound like one)
