  • Do computers keep you awake?

Just a converation starter form CNN, I'm kind of currious to hear peoples take on the article.

Yes, they do, but only when some security researcher somewhere with a lot of clout gets everyone in a tizzy that patches get pushed out without proper testing that and those patches crash my mail server.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

If people are stupid enough to sleep near their computer, that's their problem. Personally I'm fucking sick and tired of manufacturer's putting blue LED's in every goddamn thing.

how about the blue LED fans.. though the blue flashing LED on the samsung monitors is quite annoying in a completely dark house :(

Nah. I've pretty much become accustomed to all kinds of crap lighting up a room, or blinking, or even creating white noise. I've been technologically desensitized.

Oddly enough, when you move out of your parents basement, and get your own house, you don't have to sleep with your computers anymore.

              I kid, I kid....

White noise is a big deal for me, but lights while I'm trying to sleep bug the shit out of me. Whomever thought it was a good idea to put blue LED's in clock radios should be keelhauled.

My current problem with Blue LED's is on my Apnea machine, every button on it is lit up with a blue LED and since it has to sit right beside the bed, it lights up the entire side.

When you say "sleep with your computers", Streaker... you do know that's not what they mean by "female port," yes?

I live in a one bedroom apartment with computers, routers, 2 noisy Siamese cats(meow, meow, meow) at a 5 points intersection, near 3 hospitals; one a trauma center, with helicopter pad, 2 fire companies, and 1 rescue squad....I sleep just fine, couldn't sleep without them.

I honestly can't sleep without my computer being on.

I usually fail and just fall asleep on top of a mass of keyboards, cords, and random peripherals. Insomniac by nature when not failing at making it to bed the few nights a week necessary.

The "heartbeat" from my MacBook Pro brings me comfort at night and actually helps me sleep I also have random electronic things in an entertainment center with frosted glass doors, and the LEDs produce a neat glowy effect, much like a nightlight. I also have to turn on a fan at night for noise, even in the middle of winter.

Re: Do computers keep you awak?

                          i use f*lux which helps a bit,,

i hate the white noise though, so the 1U testing with 8 14,000RPM fans ain't helping. i usually leave the tv on.

usually i find though its not the light that bothers me, its the slightly uncomfortable keys pressed into my face, still haven't gotten used to it after all these years. still i've got a ytrewq forehead.

still beyond all that, the thing that makes me lose the most sleep, or wake up, is code that doesn't work, or an unsolved problem.

Re: Do computers keep you awak?

From what I have read about ambient light and the human sleep cycle in the past, it makes sense to me.

Then again I have never really met a hacker that didn't have some sort of sleep problem in general so ambiant light is pretty much the least of their troubles when it comes to why they aren't getting good sleep. ;)

Yes, I hate those little blue LEDs. Studies show that blue is the brightest light at night (yellow during the day)

Studies also show that people who have too much light in their room at night tend not to sleep as well as people with completely dark rooms.

My solution was to invest in a $2 silky sleep mask from wally world. I love it to death. They're right near the eye patches, and yes I tried to google them and share the link, however, walmart.com refuses to admit that they carry them, however wrong I know they are. : \
