Re: Does everyone just eat at the hotel during all of DEFCON?
At etftw and Supralingua
I'm from England, living in Dublin and had a meal and Guinness at the pub with my mentee so I might be the right man to answer your questions!
The Guinness was draught and was nice, seemed to be a bit less "creamy" than here in Dublin but good anyway.
Food was ok, service was as slow as hell. Overall I'd say the pub was nothing special, it was about the same quality level as a Wetherspoons back home in my opinion.
Just re the eating in general I do similar to others, I stock up at grocery shops on protein foods like jerky and slow release carb foods like rice and oat cakes. I'm a powerlifter so I also have protein bars and RTD protein drinks as well from GNC (or I bring the protein powder with me and mix them up at the Riv).

Ok.. so I have to share... I just went to a place called "Ellis Island" - It's a little distance south of the Riv, but well worth the bus ride! From the Riv, go south on the strip then left on Flamingo and right on Koval, right there on the Left... Any way 10 oz Sirloin Steak dinner with potato, veggies and a salad for $6.99 - NO JOKE!!! And a PLUS!!!! They microbrew their own BEER and it's only $2 for a 20 oz beer!!! 24 HOURS A DAY! and same beer is only $1.75 at the bar!!!!!! If you're looking for good, cheap food.... :-)

I signed up for the "Resorts Club" at the Hilton so I could stock up on water, juice, fruit, snacks and coffee before heading over to Defcon everyday. Tonight they were telling everyone going into the club room that you can't take anything out with you anymore! That's some serious bulllshit.
FYI. Draught beers at the English pub in the Riviera include Guinness and Smithwicks.
Interesting report on the Sahara food hack Deviant :) Any digestive issues to report?

Re: Does everyone just eat at the hotel during all of DEFCON?
tonight we discovered one of the best "super cheap food" hacks in Las Vegas. one caveat... it involves going to the Sahara.
if you can bear with the pain and shame of setting foot in that shithole, you can basically feed four if not five people for the entire weekend of DEFCON for $20. go to the NASCAR Cafe (to the left sort of as you enter, just keep walking) and take their "super B3 burrito challenge"... they serve you a burrito the size of a goddamn Duraflame Fireplace log.
the deal is "if you finish it, it's free... if not, it's $20." don't even try to finish it, of course. just have a nice dinner (it is very tasty, our group discovered) and then wrap the rest up. they force you to sit in some lame-ass showcase seats where toothless rubes from the sticks all stare at you and cheer you on (the people who stay at this hotel have utterly no life and find the notion of eating contests to be more entertaining than opera or theater or perhaps even pro wrestling which by the look of the crowd and their t-shirts is a big draw for these folk)
you are required to stay and "make the attempt" for at least 30 minutes, then you can call it quits and wrap up the rest. they take your photo for some "wall of fame" but we found that flipping off the camera (whee DEFCON salute) ensures that those photos will never be posted.
so, yeah... enough food to feed a fucking small army for at least two days all for under twenty bucks. just be sure to wash really well after you leave and don't rub up against the slot machines or else you may walk outta there with a meth habit.Last edited by Deviant Ollam; July 30, 2010, 01:31.

Best deal for at least one lunch would be to head about a 10 minute walk north to the intersection of Sahara and the Strip (and then go west a block) to Capriotti's Sandwich Shop. They're delicious (Mmmm bobbie </homer>). I'll probably be heading there on Saturday.

The peppermill, while not as cheap as say, McDonald's, if infinitely better.

Re: Does everyone just eat at the hotel during all of DEFCON?
I've always picked up a cheap $7 styrofoam cooler from a gas station / booze shop and kept it filled with hotel ice. It seems to work very well in the past.
Regarding nearby eats, yes, please leave the Riv to get food. There's an excellent Thai place nearby the Riv. Near Alexis Park, there's the hole in the wall sushi joint next to the japanese food/porn shop, Hofbrahaus for a great German time (minus the scheisse) across from the Hard Rock hotel/casino (also nearby Alexis).

That's not nearly as ghetto as the trash can filled with ice I've usually done.

Re: Does everyone just eat at the hotel during all of DEFCON?
A couple years back, one of my friends did manage to get a room with a minifridge in it. Guess it's just luck of the draw. Those 12V powered coolers do surprisingly well, if you're not in a big hurry.
The first couple of years I just ate whatever I could get at the hotel, but last year, I discovered the magic of leaving the hotel. Grocery stores are far, far cheaper, and there's an Albertsons so close by it pays to make a trip.

yeah, the lack of minifridges in the rooms is my LEAST favorite thing about the Riv.
I've resorted to a cooler, before, but man, that is a pain in the ass. :/
