  • Con Flu

Somewhere on the way back from Vegas I picked up a nasty case of con flu. I still can't hear very well in both ears, tonsils were inflamed for a day, and my sinuses are full. Anyone ever experience this? I vaguely remember getting the same thing last year, and I almost want to say it was right after DEFCON. If you have experienced it, what remedies would you recommend?

Part of it may be the elevation and humidity difference between Las Vegas and Orlando, FL. It could also have something to do with my allergies and any number of other things. My boss got a kick out of it though, "So, you got a virus at DEFCON?" Very funny.

Anyways, just curious how many people came down with con flu and lived to tell the tale.

Didn't you know? The Feds use Defcon as a bio-warfare proving ground. The killer bees from last year didn't do their job, so they had to try something different.

      Re: Con Flu

Oh wow, I got really sick on tuesday and I am still feeling pretty ill today. I live in las vegas so it wasn't the change in climate for me. I figured it was too little sleep + too much alcohol + a lot of people together + lots of physical activity.

        Re: Con Flu

This is actually a yearly thing. Search the forums and you'll find a thread after each Defcon discussing who got sick. So much so that it's actually got a name: the Defcon Crud.

Last year was particularly bad for a lot of people. Enough so for some to conjecture that we got some variety of H1N1. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case as I hadn't been that sick in a long time.

This year I'm holding strong so far. I've got a bit of a cough, but thats largely because each year I go from being a non-smoker to a smoker and back to being a non-smoker.

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

            Re: Con Flu

I realized something was up when I got back. Went ahead and started hitting the Emergen-C twice a day until I started getting better. Switched to Dayquil/Nyquil mix and have been feeling progressively better. Still have a cough, and I can't hear very well. Holding out until next week before heading to the doctor's office, as I have a feeling I'm just stopped up.

Yeah, I'm not feeling too well either. Sleeping schedule gets off, alcohol consumption goes higher than normal (for some folks :P) and being surrounded by thousands of (very) strange people from locations all over the world. All that, plus braving strange airports and people on planes. Makes me want to be a germaphobe.

                  Re: Con Flu

I know that by Sunday night I was not the only person showing symptoms of at least a cold. By today, it has taken residence in my chest, and appears to be building additions for it's kin. I suspect it is the confluence of so many people, being exposed to germs others have built immunity to. This might explain the variance in severity? Or perhaps that aspect is explained by the level of partying? The latter may well explain why it has me well in its grasp - DC is my time to break loose...

Yeah, I've got the same thing. It wasn't hell until landing in Frankfurt, then as the millibars of pressure went up, the congestion kept my ears from equalizing naturally, took several hours, and a little bit of assistance. I bet this next round is going to top it though. (Con-Flu recovery, plus Smallpox vaccination yay!)

                      Re: Con Flu

the only thing i seem to come away from Vegas with every year is a massive case of dry tubes in my noggin'

my throat, nose, and generally my whole head feels like it was kept stored in a pelican case with loads and loads of desiccant packets. and i do not think that it's just the "desert" that does it to me. yes, the air out there is dry, but i think that the older generation cooling systems at the Riv are more to blame. we stay at the Caesar's for much, much longer than the weekend of DEFCON (and we are outdoors then, too) and i never really feel so dried out.

the rooms at the Riv, on the other hand, seem to have those archaic air conditioners that have only two speeds (civilian jet aircraft and supersonic military jet aircraft) and which can only cool the room by recirculating already cool/dry air and making it even colder and drier.

the less time i spend in my hotel room at the Riv, the better i feel. and perhaps that's why this year i came home feeling rather alright... i spent all of 12 hours in my Riviera room the entire four days we were there.

i'm really looking forward to seeing what the HVAC system at the Rio is like in the hotel rooms. the con space looks amazing, can't wait to see the guest quarters.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I am with you guys. Both I and my friend are really sick, I started on Tuesday. My friend stayed in bed most of the last day of the con and is now just starting to feel better. I can’t complain I had a blast .

Maybe we should have a room cooling competition; we can run it right after the beer cooling competition. I don’t think we would have a problem finding a room to do it in.

First couple of days after con, I felt like I was coming down with the crud. Seems to have gone away for now.

I agree with Deviant on the Riv's older HVAC system being a contributing source of the crud.
The move to the Rio should cut down on people getting it next year.
