*sob, I've fallen out of the test population. Apparently the government doesn't want my dna anymore.

    Re: Con Flu

WTF I just discovered this thread, I left con on Sunday around 5pm, skipped the closing ceremony and headed out to change hotels, I was coughing in the cab the entire way to the other hotel.

By Sunday night I had a low fever and was congested. Monday it had took over and I was feeling pretty bad & light headed. I went to the Walgreen's to get some NyQuil that night which mixed excellently with the liquor I had been drinking all day. Tuesday I slept in really late, ate lunch (none of which I could taste at all) and noticed my hearing was dull.

When I flew back home Wed night I felt like my eardrums were going to burst. They took forever to adjust once I was off the plane, I actually was debating going straight to the hospital.

The crap stayed with me well into the next weekend.. about 10 days before my sinuses finally were almost cleared up.

Now I find out there was more than a dozen people with this stuff..

Thanks. This was actually a failed attempt at a joke... And, bonus points to Gadsden if the double entendre was intentional.

So.. I stayed healthy this year... 100%.

) Two years ago I gained, lost, and regained my voice a total of 5 times... nearly bedridden for a couple weeks and sustaining a bronchial cough for no less than two months (to the annoyance and astonishment of coworkers).

) One year ago I participated in the post-PAX swine flu breakout.

This year, the only changes I made were:
    1) drink more
    2) sleep less
    3) did not make it to the Hackerpimps party
    4) did not hang out with Mouse

If others got the crud, then #4 the 'Mouse-effect' is probably ruled out.

And I'm finally back to 100% hearing again, and despite a clear need for sleep, I feel healthy. Plane ride and business trip seems to have resolved my case of Con Crud.

roflmao -- I'll be sure to see if any CDC friends want to come out next year to be spotted!

To DT and all those sufferers of what we in the Southeast call "Con Crud" -- get better soon!

Dateline, Las Vegas, NV. Aug 14, 2010

Malware infects Defcon goons and Organizer Dark Tangent
It was reported that earlier today, organizers of the security conference Defcon had been infected with malware. Their own layered system defense was compromised by an unknown illness codenamed, "Con Flu." It appears this it a variant of another bit of malware called, "Defcon Crud," but unlike "Defcon Crud" the "Con Flu," knows kung-fu. Goons and organizers of the Defcon conference have engaged automated system defenses that look for malware-like activity so their systems may dynamically write detection routines to better identify "Con Flu" in the future. Removal of the malware is a time-consuming process, which involves fluids being leaked from containers in non-standard ways.

Not all Goons and organizers were infected. Noid, a long-time organizer from Defcon had this to say about Con Flu:
As the security guy at Defcon, it would be really bad for me to be infected by malware, so I prepared my defenses and directed the effort of security goons to keep that malware away from me. As you can tell, I am free of this malware so the operation was a success. Even malware fears DEFCON security goons.

After nearly 2 weeks, there is still no comment from the CDC on this outbreak. Some have claimed this is a coverup while others believe people from the CDC planted this malware in Las Vegas because they are not considered "Feds" in the "Spot the Fed" contest. We'll keep you up-to-date as we get more information.

I thought I dodged it for the first time this year, but no. It just took time to get me, that 's why I have been off the radar for so long. Burning eyes, cough, lots of sleep. I'm hoping to have it beat by early next week, but I empathize with everyone - this sucks.

So far, this is looking like the first year at the Riv where I didn't get the Defcon Crud..

As an update, I did go to the doctor earlier this week, as the hearing loss hasn't fixed itself. Doctor said I had fluid in my eustachian tubes and prescribed a steroid nasal spray. Pretty sure I don't have a sinus infection, but you'd definitely think so if you heard me speak. Worst part is I have to fly again on Monday.

I do tend to fall victim to the Con Plague every now and then, but this year has been worse than ever, I actually left the Riv in a damn wheelchair at the rear entrance on the 2nd and just got out of the hospital on the 11th, after stopping every now and then through the desert on the way to so cal in order to vomit some more. Turns out I got to the ER just in time. Note to others, when your friends tell you to see a doctor, do it even if it is the middle of DEFCON.

I have come to expect it every year to the point that I bring down cough drops and other flu medicine with me to DEFCON to take on Sunday night because I always feel like crap by then.
